SIGNAL // FRACTURE // VOID // AFTERIMAGE — Playlist I (69 mins)
Four acts, fourteen tracks, one descent and return.
I — Signal Human warmth, melody, connection. Richter · Mansell · Arnalds
II — Fracture Ghost frequencies, fading language, beauty under strain. Dead Can Dance · Drab Majesty · Cocteau Twins
III — Void Buried under glass; pressure, distance, disorientation. Ben Frost · Raime · Emptyset · Tim Hecker
IV — Afterimage Bittersweet light; altered, not restored. Hildur Guðnadóttir · Jóhann Jóhannsson · Hammock · NIN
Total runtime: 1 hr 09 min
I made this playlist to sample the darker territories of darkwave and dark ambient, searching for the strands that resonate with my own listening history and internal weather — darkness, duality, paradox, signal, noise.
I gravitate to melodic dark ambience with emotional weight — haunted, lyrical, cinematic, bittersweet, human — not cold, not noisy for its own sake. Not grim nihilism. Not pure drone. Not harsh industrial. Dark beauty, not dark emptiness.
I’m currently listening through this as a first pass, to discover which frequencies land, which melodies linger, and which acts feel like home. The intention is to build a second, more refined playlist, and eventually fold those influences into the SIGNAL // NOISE album as it evolves.
If you know artists, albums, or individual tracks that live in this world — melodic, haunted, emotional, atmospheric — I’d love suggestions. The process welcomes interference.
