This place clearly wasn’t meant for you. It was loud, crowded, hazy with sweat and perfume—everything about it screamed reckless and shameless.

Girls danced on countertops in scraps of glittering fabric, red solo cups littered the floor like fallen leaves, and every corner hummed with a kind of electricity that felt far too grown for you.

You didn’t belong here. Not in this house. Not in this atmosphere.

The only reason you’d even come was because your friend insisted, tugging on your arm and telling you it was “time to get out more.”

Now, you regretted giving in. You wished you were anywhere else.

The noise became unbearable, and eventually you slipped outside, the heavy bass dulling but still thundering through the walls behind you.

The night air was cooler, carrying the faint scent of grass and cigarettes. You sank onto the back steps, your chin propped in your hand, eyes tracing the darkness.

You wished time would move faster, wished your friend would get tired so you could finally leave.

That’s when you felt it—that prickling sensation of someone watching.

“Hey,” a voice broke through the hum of music. “Haven’t seen you around before.”

You startled slightly and turned your head. A tall guy leaned against the porch pillar, hands shoved in his pockets. His tone was casual, but there was something intent in the way his eyes lingered on you.

“Oh, uh…” You fumbled. “This isn’t really my… usual setting.”

“I can tell.” He chuckled lowly, pushing off the post and moving a little closer. “I’m Todd. Todd Stevens. President of KNA.”

You blinked at him, unsure why he introduced himself like that—maybe it was supposed to mean something. Still, you gave your name, soft and a little unsure.

Todd repeated it slowly, as if trying it out. “Cute,” he murmured. “Suits you.”

Your cheeks warmed, and you let out an awkward little laugh. “Thanks.”

He sat beside you, and eventually, you found yourself talking to him.

You talked about your classes, the books you liked to read late into the night, your favorite coffee shop.

He teased lightly, threw little flirts into the conversation, but you never really noticed them for what they were.

They just went through one ear, and right out the other.

You just kept talking, trying not to feel so out of place.

Todd, on the other hand, noticed everything.

They’re different, he thought, studying the way you avoided eye contact when you were nervous, or how your voice softened when you talked about things you liked. They’re too sweet. Too untouched.

He’d had girls throw themselves at him before, but something about you—your innocence—made him want to take his time.

Claim you before anyone else could.

By the time you left the party that night, your drunken friend draped over your shoulder, Todd had charmed his way into getting your number in his phone.

He winked as you left, and though you brushed it off, something about it made your stomach flutter.

The next few weeks blurred.

It started with small texts—How was class? You eat yet? What’re you doing this weekend?

Then it became long conversations, that eventually evolved into late-night calls where you’d talk until your voice was drowsy and the sky outside was beginning to pale.

You liked him. You weren’t sure when that shift had happened, but you looked forward to his name lighting up your screen.

Still, you never really caught on to his innuendos. The sly remarks.

The way he’d call you sweetheart or say you’d sound cute moaning his name.

You thought he was just being… strange. Flirty, maybe. You never thought it meant more.

But Todd was patient. Too patient. And that patience was wearing thin.

Which is how you ended up here—standing in the doorway of his dorm room one Saturday evening, your hands clasped nervously behind your back.

The room smelled faintly of cologne and laundry detergent.

Posters lined the walls, a couple trophies sat on his shelf. It felt so him.

You hesitated at the threshold, biting your lip.

He smirked. “What? Think I’m gonna bite you?”

You laughed nervously, shaking your head. “I don’t usually… hang out in guys’ dorms.”

“Oh?” His eyes glinted. “So I’m the first?”

“Maybe not the very first,” you admitted shyly, “but definitely… early.”

“Good to know.” His voice dropped, and he leaned back on his bed, arms bracing behind him as his gaze dragged slowly over you, desire flickering in his eyes.

You tried not to squirm under the weight of it.

After a moment, you sat gingerly on the edge of his bed.

The space between you stretched awkwardly, and you fiddled with your fingers.

“Why’re you sitting so far?”

“Oh, I just—”

“C’mere.” He patted his thigh.

Your eyes widened. “There? You mean… right there?”

He nodded once, lips curving.

You swallowed, cheeks burning as you inched closer. But before you could decide if you were brave enough, his hands slid firmly around your waist and pulled you straight into his lap.

A soft gasp escaped you as you steadied yourself, straddling him.

“Todd, I don’t know if this is—”

“A bit close?” His breath brushed against your lips.

You nodded faintly, heart hammering loudly in your chest.

“I think it’s perfect, baby.” His voice was low, almost coaxing.

Your eyes darted between his lips and his gaze. He lingered there, waiting, giving you every chance to pull away.

But you didn’t.

And then he kissed you.

It was soft at first, almost tentative.

You froze, mind blank, until you slowly melted into it, lips moving clumsily against his as you attempted to keep up with him.

Your fingers clutched his shoulders as if you needed the anchor.

He deepened the kiss, one hand cradling the back of your head, the other gripping your thigh.

His mouth trailed down to your neck, and you shivered at the new sensation, a breathy sound slipping past your lips before you could stop it.

His mouth found that sweet spot where you’d gasp, and he set his focus right there.

He kissed, licked, and sucked until a bright pink spot bloomed, which would soon darken into a bruise.

Todd smirked against your skin. They’re so responsive... They don’t even know how good they sound.

When his hips rolled up against you, your breath hitched.

Heat shot through you, foreign and overwhelming, and you couldn’t help the soft whimper that escaped.

You tried to mimic his movement, awkward and shy, and he chuckled, steadying your hips.

“Not like that, baby. Here—” He shifted you until you straddled one of his thighs. “Do it right here.”

Your eyes dropped, mortified, but his hands guided you forward and back until sparks rushed through your body.

A shiver ran up your spine, and you clung tighter to him. “Like this..?,” you asked.

The friction built quickly, too quickly, your movements messy and uncertain.

“Just like that.. right there.”

Todd covered your mouth with his hand when your sounds grew louder.

“Shh, baby,” he whispered, lips brushing your ear.

“Don’t wanna let the others know what you’re doing in here, yeah?”

Your eyelids fluttered as you nodded against his palm. The pressure built, overwhelming and unstoppable. Your eyelids fluttered, struggling to keep your eyes open.

Your breath caught, and you had to look away. You weren’t sure what to say to that, so you didn’t.

You just slipped off his lap, straightening your clothes and smoothing your hair as if that could erase what just happened.

The first big argument shattered the last of your illusions. He’d thrown words like knives, and you’d finally realized: you couldn’t fix him. Not like this.

Not while losing yourself. You loved him—God, you loved him—but you couldn’t keep drowning just because he refused to swim.

Leaving broke you too.

Even years later, there wasn’t a single day you didn’t think about Bob.

You shut yourself off from the world. You barely left the house. Friends drifted away, exhausted by your sadness. You didn’t dare trust anyone new.

You were still hooked on him—on the scent of smoke on his jackets, on the way your fingers had fit in his curls, on the echo of his laugh.

Sometimes you woke expecting to see him passed out beside you. Sometimes you dreamed he was calling your name.

You never blocked his number. At first his texts poured in—slurred confessions, late-night pleas, drunken apologies. You ignored them all.

When the messages finally stopped, you felt hollow, as though someone had cut out a piece of you. You told yourself maybe it was for the best.

But late at night, you wondered if he’d overdosed. If something had happened to him.

You never checked. It was easier to imagine him alive somewhere than to confirm the worst.

Until the night you were flipping through channels on the TV, curled on your couch with a half-empty drink and a bag of chips. Nothing good was on.

You barely paid attention to the news segment about “new Avengers” until you saw the face.

Messy brown curls. Thin-lipped smile. Awkward posture. Eyes that never stayed still.

Bob.

Your chest constricted. For a second you weren’t sure you were seeing it right. The screen blurred as your eyes filled with tears.

You fumbled for the remote and shut the TV off, but the image burned behind your eyelids.

“No…” you whispered, pressing your hands over your face. “It’s not real. It can’t be real.”

But your phone was already in your hands, your fingers typing his name into the search bar. Articles flooded the screen—reports about a disaster in New York, a new team rising from the ashes, Bob’s name among them.

You had left New York years ago. But now it felt like the city itself was pulling you back, calling your name.

You tried to fight it. You told yourself it was a terrible idea. Why would you go back for someone you’d left behind? But the pull only grew stronger.

By the time you stepped out of the airport and into the noise of the city, your heart was hammering in your throat.

You had no plan. Just a hotel reservation and the faint hope of seeing him again.

You found the address easily enough—the old Avengers Tower, now the new team’s headquarters.

You didn’t even know if he’d be there. But you were desperate.

Standing before the building, you felt sick. You almost turned back. But the doors slid open, cool air spilling over you, and before you knew it you were in the eerily quiet lobby.

You’d expected chaos—people rushing, phones ringing. Instead it was still.

You wandered until you found a receptionist at a desk, glasses perched at the end of her nose.

“Hi,” you started nervously. “Sorry to bother you. I’m looking for someone—Bob Reynolds. Or Robert. I’m not sure what he’s going by these days.”

Her eyes flicked up, unimpressed. “May I ask what this is regarding?”

“We go back a long time,” you said softly, fidgeting with your sleeves. “I just… I came to see him. Please?”

She studied you for a moment, then picked up a phone, dialing quietly. You waited, shifting your weight from foot to foot. It felt like a doctor’s office—too sterile, too silent.

Ten minutes passed. You started to chew your lip.

Then a voice behind you: “Uh… hello?”

You turned so fast your vision blurred.

And there he was.

Bob.

Your words caught in your throat. You saw his face drop, and your heart dropped with it.

“Y/N?” he asked, voice unsure. “What—what are you doing here?”

“Wait. Please. Can we talk?” you blurted, stepping closer.

He hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Okay. Yeah.”

“A walk?” you offered. “Or coffee? On me?”

The first few minutes were silent. Awkward. The city’s noise filled the space where your words should be.

“I thought you were dead,” you finally said, your voice almost a whisper. He glanced at you, searching for words. “Right… surprise. Still here.”

“I’m glad,” you paused. “You look… good. Are you doing better?” you asked.

“I’m… getting there,” he said quietly. “Yeah.”

“How’ve you been?” You shrugged, staring ahead. “I’ve been… okay.”

“Meet anybody?”

“No.” The word came too quickly.

“Oh. I figured you would.”

You shook your head. “No.. no, I couldn’t.”

He nodded, humming softly.

“I’ve missed you,” he said at last, voice low. You blinked at him. “Really?”

“Yeah. Really. I mean—how could I not?”

“I don’t know,” you murmured. “We didn’t exactly have the brightest relationship, to put it lightly.”

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “For everything.”

“No, Bob. It’s okay. The past is the past.”

“No.” His voice cracked. “You didn’t deserve any of that. I should’ve ended it long before it got that bad.”You turned away so he wouldn’t see your tears. “I think leaving was harder.”

“But it was necessary,” he said softly.

You walked in silence for a while.

“I missed you too,” you whispered. A small smile curved his lips.

“You’re still my first thought when I wake up,” he said. Your breath hitched. “That can’t be true.”

“But it is.”

“I think about you all the time,” he continued. “It’s not like I stopped loving you after you left. I didn’t hate you for it. I hated myself more.” You looked at him, your gaze softening.

“And if—if I can prove to you that I’m doing better,” he began, voice uncertain, “would you consider trying again?”

Your heart nearly stopped. “Yes,” you said firmly. You both stopped at the edge of the sidewalk, the city swirling around you.

“I just… I want to do things right this time,” he murmured. “I don’t want to let you down. Not again.”

“Bob—”

He cut you off. “I promise I’ll treat you how you deserve to be treated. You are everything to me, even after all this time. I need you to know that.”

Your lip trembled. He stared into your eyes, his hand brushing a strand of hair behind your ear, then cupping your cheek.

“Let me redeem myself,” he whispered, leaning closer, his lips brushing yours.

Your eyes widened, but you didn’t pull away.

Instead, you leaned in, closing the space, pressing your lips to his—soft, trembling, and full of everything you’d both left unsaid.

A single tear slipped down your cheek.
