Because I had some peeps and anons asking about my opinion on the movie so heres MY very short review of sorts-- (which im not quite great at writing...i mean frankly I suck at this sort of stuff. Im a computer animator so I see the beauty of movies from a total different perspective-- bare with me here and I'll keep my best at leaving a spoiler free review from the POV of a general audience)
All in all, I really enjoyed the movie! Since the trailers never really gave me much to work with, I went in with a open mind, and i think everyone else should too.....
Director Gareth Edwards is definitely out to pay homage to the iconic fire breathing lizard who first hit the big screens back in 1954, and to be honest he did a really clever, splendid, respectful job at it while bringing the icon to the modern day setting (unlike that garbage back in 1998. Im sorry but New York attacking Godzilla was a really lousy take on the kaiju).
Of course, and be warned, Edwards was clearly influenced by Steven Spielberg's technique of teasing you throughout the entire film by making you wait, and frankly beg, for the good stuff. Honestly, I think it was worth it. We're all waiting for Godzilla to come out and dive into the city to, uh, lets say clash..... (for the sake of hardcore Godzilla fans I'll leave out the tasty Easter Eggs they've got going for you) --point being that Edwards does a fine job at getting us excited for the big guy to take center stage. And when he does, trust me when I say the giant lizard will literally smack you across the face and remind you why he became such an iconic figure in the first place. He had us all cheering for him god damnit. Thank you Mister Godzilla, as if my appetite for giant monster movie blockbusters weren't satisfied already....actually it never really is.
For those thinking something along the lines of a Pacific Rim or Transformers, in your face style of monster action, I wouldnt say this is a MUST see for you guys only because we want monsters. Not humans. And like i said, we're waiting for the main, HUGE event but in the meantime we're left with some interesting, monstrous treats along side the humans who are in the middle of desperately trying to contain this chaos. Our humans could have been better. The storyline between our main characters tries desperately to be tragic, but it just falls flat. In my opinion. Thankfully I could forgive the matter because I'm here for Godzilla, not the people who he might have accidentally stepping on (though there was a really nice heart felt moment between the main character and our giant lizard).
Watch Godzilla on a HUGE screen and you'll come away excited and talkative like yours truly. I'm really glad the movie paid proper, careful homage to its roots while bringing our star over here to America. Now excuse while I play Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee!
