THIS SMALL SERIOUS CHILD.

Touya comes in taunting him, because he can, and he’s ready to just completely accept responsibility for breaking a law that he didn’t know about.

And he cites his duty.

It’s practically everything you need to know about his personality in one page.

“Thank goodness this will be directly relevant for the rest of your life.”

Very fun of Yukito to ALSO cut to the core of his personality based on that small interaction.

And fascinating that this same personality trait is mentioned as a positive here but also comes with a lot of negatives when pushed to the extreme - and it has. Lava Lamp has kept this as the core of his personality and left very little room for anything else.

(ALSO? I like that this version of Yukito kind of has the mysterious mysticism to him that you would normally expect from Yue. As if in CCS they kind of ARE two halves of the same being, but here they're united as one?)

I LOVE the different takes on this moment between the three of them.

Yukito sees Lava Lamp’s dedication and suggests he becomes friends with Sakura. Perhaps because this will be useful to Sakura in the future, perhaps because Sakura needs a friend, and perhaps because Yukito can see that Lava Lamp ALSO needs a friend. He sees their compatibility, and I think with his evaluation of Lava Lamp’s personality you can see that he approves.

Meanwhile Lava Lamp nods at the suggestion of becoming Sakura’s friend BECAUSE IT’S HIS MISSION.

He was sent across the universe SPECIFICALLY to meet her and form a connection.

It’s his ASSIGNED TASK, so of course he gravely accepts the suggestion. It’s his solemn duty.

Meanwhile Touya just doesn’t like it because he’s overly protective and can’t help himself from stirring the pot on purpose BECAUSE HE STILL CAN.

Oh here it is!

The iconic moment! This time in full colour, even if they never print the colour images for some reason! It’s gorgeous.

It’s a nice change that the things falling aesthetically around them are clover leaves and not feathers for once. A little less depressing for their first major moment! Less focussed on crumbling souls and encroaching doom, more genuine cuteness!

I was out here wondering if the long sleeves of this outfit are something else unique to this version of Sakura but I'm double checking and we've seen Sakura in Clow Kingdom Long Sleeves at least once before - in the opening image for chapitre 14.

Unless that image was always secretly of these two and not the Sakura and Syaoran we initially thought? Always possible!

And you know what? I’m a HUGE fan that it was Sakura who did the protecting first. After all this time, and all these alternate worlds, right at the start it was SAKURA defending Syaoran that started the trend

CLAMP have been selling the idea that Lava Lamp’s father is Li Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura for a few chapters now. They’ve dropped numerous links and connections and WANT us to think that.

BUT THEN, IF IT WAS ACTUALLY TRUE, THEY WOULD JUST SHOW HIS FACE, RIGHT?

They’ve already DROPPED this information. We already THINK it's Li Syaoran. So there would be no need to hide his face any further.

UNLESS IT WASN’T TRUE.

UNLESS THIS IS NOT LI SYAORAN.

UNLESS THEY’RE CONTINUING TO HIDE THE IDENTITY SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE IT WOULD GIVE AWAY THE FACT THAT THIS ISN’T LI SYAORAN.

And am I jumping to conclusions? Yes! Yes always! Welcome to the Jumping To Conclusions Blog at Tumblr Dot Com. But you’d think that even if this was just another version of Syaoran, he’d look relatively identical to what we’d assume to be Li Syaoran. They could just show his face and we’d still assume we knew who he was, even if it was wrong.

THERE WE GO. CRACK THEORY TIME. This is the only reason I can currently guess for why they’d still be hiding Lava Lamp’s father’s face.

It is adorable and extremely appropriate that Lava Lamp has the same style of shirt as his Mysterious father, especially when they’re completely side by side at the bottom of the page. How they’re so so very similar in name and face and identity and personality and fate, but even in just the shirt you can see ever so slight visible differences differences that are not eyes and are in fact shirt specific decorations.

ALSO, very fun choice that they’re talking about Sakura here while also being surrounded by cherry blossoms. It’s very Dream World coded, even though we see the supports of buildings in the background, so it’s probably not actually a dream. I...

No wait I was about to say we don't ever see buildings in the dream world, but that's not true. Watanuki sees them all the time. Hmm.

WELL, putting that aside also, this is possibly just a nice detail about where they live, and possibly a nice thematic link to the fact that they’re currently talking ABOUT Sakura’s dream visions.

I’m also desperately trying to recall if the transition into a flashback (the black borders around the page) is usually accompanied by those swirls of white in the edges? Is that a new detail or am I just looking too closely?

It’s the eternal mystery.

OH OUCH

CLAMP COMING BACK SWINGING WITH THE PARALLEL TO THE MANGA’S OPENING SCENE

BRUTAL.

To have Sakura and Lava Lamp promise to hold hands when at THAT moment they ALSO couldn't close that distance? When it mattered most?

Was it these two all along, back then? Was the manga's opening a glimpse of what happens on between THESE two characters, in ten years time? Or is that still yet another scenario we haven’t seen yet?

Either way THIS almost-touch between them is accompanied with the PROMISE that they’ll close the distance between them on her birthday. Establishing the pattern of Sakura and Syaoran ALMOST touching but then not being able to - for it to become the outline of their lives afterwards, and the lives of their clones, and onwards until the present day.

So Lava Lamp made two promises here (to protect Sakura, and to hold her hand) and we're SO close to him maybe being able to fulfill them after all this time!

VERY fun that Lava Lamp already knows that using the sword is connected to something important. Even at this age he knew something big was coming up, but he didn’t know it would be soon, and he didn’t know it would be on another world.

We can’t get a read on his father’s reaction to his questions - whether he’s holding back his emotions to not scare his son, whether he knows the answers and hates that he can’t say them, or whether this might be someone else who just looks like his father and is sending him away for evil plot reasons.

I’m not sure if that last one is just a step too far fetched for now, but who knows!

This doesn’t clear it up in any way, but CLAMP want you to remember it all the same!
