Journey to the center of the earth

Jules Verne has a knack for writing fiction that involves exotic travels. Around the world in eighty days (back then when there were no planes yet)? Sign me up. How about sinking twenty thousand leagues under the sea? Why not?

One of his most compelling works involved what we now call volcano tourism. This essentially involves touring erupting volcanoes and watching the earth ooze from the craters and flow into the surface. This is indeed, dangerous, especially when volcanoes suddenly show “fits of violence.” Indeed, some have died touring erupting volcanoes (yes, we’re looking at you, Mt. Mayon).
