Hello! Thank you for the ask!! I got a little bit carried away rambling about my favs so I ended up having to put some of it under the cut. Sorry about that, I'm a professional yapper when it comes to fandom 😅
10. What work was the quickest to write?
Memento, for sure. I wrote it in about an hour or so with a migraine after the idea came to me out of nowhere. I blacked out (hyperbole, of course) and next thing I knew I had a fic lol
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
If it has to be a canon character, I think Adler, Hudson, or Mason. I like writing characters that have a lot going on in their heads and tend to be a little more reserved, mostly because it's fun to dig into their thoughts and try and figure out how they might think based on their behavior. I haven't written much from Hudson's POV (one scene in the prologue of TNG and then his other scene is from Adler's perspective) but he's a really complex guy and I like trying poking around in his head. I think he cares a lot more than he lets on and I'm really excited to write more scenes with him.
For Adler, much the same. The challenge I've had is trying to figure out how his demeanor was different when he was younger and in his earlier days with the CIA (since I tweaked canon a bit so he was around from the start) versus how he acts in Cold War and 6. I'm trying to have him be a little bit cockier and a little bit more laid back (which we'll see in his interactions with my OC, Claire when I get there) before Vietnam since I think that's probably when his personality started to shift. His dialogue with Claire is also some of my favorite to write. It's a real back and forth whenever they have a conversation, since they're both pretty brainy and don't beat around the bush.
In the case of Mason I've enjoyed trying to give him a more obvious character arc, and I did make him a little younger than he is in canon. From being inexperienced and idealistic to being subdued and obsessive. He's a golden retriever that's been turned into a guard dog and I've also liked trying to explore the very complicated family dynamics, from his relationship with his father to his own relationship with David. And also exploring the physical toll of his brainwashing. Canon abuses him so much and I'm fully taking advantage of that.
Honorable mention to Weaver, because there's absolutely no content for him and he's an incredibly underrated character. He has a lot of depth than no one really seems to focus on and I'm so excited to move forward and properly write from his POV.
If OCs count then I'm torn between Claire and Joanne. I sound crazy when I act like my characters have a mind of their own but let me tell you that Claire 100% takes over when it comes to writing her scenes. I will be completely stumped as to what to do and she just pops up with all the answers (a scene from her perspective.) She's in the middle ground in the Cold War since she's effectively playing both sides (even though she refuses to acknowledge that she's playing the KGB and her loyalty is wavering) so she provides a window for me to cover a bunch of different sides and tie it all together with a nice bow. Yes, it currently looks like that one IASIP meme with the board and the string but I swear it comes together.
In Joanne's case she's there to ground things. She becomes Mason's anchor point and she gives me another way to have something low stakes and relaxed going on in the background. She also gives an outsiders perspective on the spy stuff. She doesn't know what's going on, but she knows that things aren't how they seem on the surface. Can she do anything to fix whatever's going on? No. But can she try her best anyway? Yes, she can and she will. Largely, though, she's there for balance. She also gives me a perfect excuse to nerd out about wildlife.
Honorable mention to Kyrill, who became a much more complex minor antagonist than I'd originally intended. He worships the state which is a very fallible idol, and only lives long enough to see it crumble and to see his prized pupil/personal weapon slip out of his control. He's the absolute worst in so many ways and I love him for it. I'm super excited to delve into his relationships with his favorite pupils (Claire and another OC of mine, Mikhail.)

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?
Honestly, it's hard to say. I consider it a pleasant surprise when people take the time out to leave a comment, but I think maybe the biggest one is how many people actually really like my OCs? I started making fan characters about ten or so years ago, back in the age of the internet when OCs were considered super cringe. So to see a lot of people that really enjoy them will always be shocking to me, honestly. But it makes me feel good as a writer.
