Tear In My Heart
Hey @lunchmoney-lance
I’m your new match! It’s a little bit late, and it’s the day before Valentine’s Day, but here is your @voltron-ss gift! I hope you like it. I wasn’t too sure what to do and this idea popped up and I tried to include something you might like. I read on your blog that you liked fluff in general and I tried to accomplish that goal to the best of my abilities.
I wish you the best of 2018 and Happy Valentine’s Day!!!
P.S.
I asked what movies are your favorite on your blog to make the one shot a bit more personalized and I have to say, E.T. was amazing!!! I saw it to make sure the few bits I mentioned weren’t out of context. I hadn’t seen it until now and all I can say is I can’t believe I went this long without seeing it. Also, on a random note, you have a pretty cool blog!
Pairing: Klance
Summary: (University AU) In which Lance and Keith are hanging out together for the first time and Lance makes himself go through a whirlwind of emotions as he debates if this is a date or not. After all, Keith always makes things complicated. Lance should know because his heart always seems to skip a bit when he’s around.
Warning: A curse word or two. If I remember correctly…
It’s nothing.
He’s mindlessly nodding his head to the radio. Waiting for the stoplight to turn green. He tries to actually listen to the song. To hear the words the artist is singing. Yet it’s all background noise as his mind goes in overdrive.
Just two friends hanging out. Nothing weird about that. I do that all the time with Hunk. Pidge. No reason to freak out.
His feet and hands are on autopilot as the light turns green. Moving through the streets with ease as his memory guides him. Telling him when he has to turn. The name of the street he has to find.
It really is no big deal. We’ve done this hundreds of times. Why should this time be any different?
He slowly comes to a stop as he parks outside a blue looking house. It’s really an apartment complex. Or at least that’s what he’s been told. He stares at it for a couple seconds. Wondering if he should BS an excuse and get the hell out before he’s seen.
It doesn’t help that his stomach feels like it’s filled with butterflies. His heart is nerve wrecking as it pounds against his chest. Without a doubt, he knows it’s just a disaster waiting to happen. So he really can’t explain the logic behind his actions. His hands have a mind of their own as they send a text that reads: I’m here.
Well I guess I can’t BS my way out anymore. Might as well say goodbye to my sanity!
There honestly is no reason to stress. It’s not like it’s the first time they’ll be alone. It’s happened before. Repeatedly. They have survived the experiences. Heck, they’ve both enjoyed said experiences. So really what is there to think about?
It’s just Keith!
And that’s exactly where the issue lies. Because it’s Keith. Stupid, mullet head Keith! Keith who knows how to push all his buttons! Keith who somehow gets under his skin! Keith who blinds him by making everything bright and technicolored. Keith with his stupid mullet and gorgeous grey eyes that always seem to captivate him until he’s drowning in them.
Just.
Keith.
So why can’t he get a grip on his nerves? Why is this so frightening?
Just two friends casually hanging out…
Except….
It’s not.
Not really. Because last time he checked, friends don’t make a big deal when asked to hang out. Friends don’t replay the moment on an endless loop. Simply put, friends don’t take three hours getting ready to “casually” hang out.
But it’s not a date. Keith never mentioned the word date. He should know. He’s replayed the conversation too many times on the drive. Wondering if he even remembered correctly.
Maybe Keith will cancel last minute.
He knows he won’t. He knows he’d be heartbroken if Keith does cancel. They’ve never made plans before. Circumstances always brought them together. Like two magnets that are forced to collide no matter how hard they try to resist. Not that Lance is resisting.
For example, Lance loves coffee. He does. And after learning Keith does homework at a local café, he decided to try the place. For coffee purposes of course!
Except the first time he goes he’s in a rush, and there’s a long line. The second time he stops by, he realizes he forgot his wallet. So there is no reason to stay. The third time he tries he notices he forgot his laptop’s charger. So there goes his chance as he heads back to his dorm.
He can’t remember how long it took to buy the cup of coffee. All he recalls is when the opportunity presented itself a familiar mullet was sitting at the corner of the café.
The fact that the first time he buys a coffee is also the first time he’s seen a mullet is just a fluke. Really. And his mama taught him to be a gentleman, so of course he greets Keith by teasingly shouting, “Mullet head! Didn’t think I’d find you here.”
He remembers Keith’s wide eyed gaze upon hearing his voice. How he tried his best to act nonchalant as they talked. How Keith was genuinely surprised Lance even liked coffee. Things were going smooth until the barista shouted, “Hot chocolate for Lance! Hot chocolate!”
Then he remembers being clumsy. How Keith raised an eyebrow upon hearing this information. How a smirk slowly formed on Keith’s lips. How he tried to ignore the barista until Keith nicely pointed out his order was ready.
Lance swears he went for the coffee. Really. He did. It doesn’t matter that the next time he goes, Keith also happened to be there. It’s not important that he spits out the drink Keith bought for him because it actually is coffee. Nor does the fact that every Tuesday from then on, they somehow find themselves doing homework at the corner of Sunny’s Café.
Somehow… No matter the circumstances… They always find themselves together.
Come on Keith! How long does it take to walk out of your house?
It’s been five minutes and still no sign of Keith. Not a single text or smoke signal letting Lance know exactly when Keith plans to show up. He busies himself by finding a station. His nerves slowly fading with each passing second.
During the fourth round of skimming through the radio, Lance glances at the clock to realize it’s been ten minutes. Taking a deep breath, he gathers all his courage as he gets out to find Keith’s apartment.
After wondering around for a bit, he finally finds the white door with a metal C. His knuckles are an inch away from touching it. He keeps willing himself to knock instead of standing there like he has been.
Briefly the thought of Keith not wanting to go crosses his mind. Making all his doubts come crashing in. It makes him want to disappear. To pretend he never came and act like it’s no big deal this upcoming Tuesday. He’s about to leave when images of last Friday come clashing into his mind once again.
They had found themselves at party with their friends. Pidge had gone off somewhere, raving about some code to finally finish her robot, Rover. Hunk had mysteriously disappeared with Shay after an hour or so. And Keith…
Well Keith somehow ended up in his lap. Both a bit tipsy as they talked about everything and nothing. He doesn’t know when things begin to change. When he stopped seeing Keith as a rival and more as a friend. But he knows he liked the way Keith rested his head in the crook of his neck. He liked how Keith leaned in way too close to whisper in his ear. His lips touching him every once in a while. Soft enough to know it was an accident. Frequent enough to know it was not.
Yet when Lance gushed about his family tradition of watching movies every Sunday, something changed. Keith was looking at him with a genuine smile on his face. Eyes shining with adoration as Lance babbled on with a longing he didn’t know he felt.
When he finished rambling, Keith was quiet. They both stayed still as they held on tightly to one another. When suddenly Keith looked him straight in the eye as he asked Lance what he was doing next Sunday.
It was a simple question. Though it made Lance’s heart skyrocket because it was the first time he heard this trivial question. The first time one of them hinted they wanted to spend time together where it’s only them.
He felt himself sober up as Keith continued to mention a drive-thru theater being nearby. How they could go see a movie if he was up for it. Keith didn’t use the word date. Lance didn’t mention it. Still, he knew the meaning behind his words. They had blurred the line that separated friends and lovers with soft glances and faint touches. With their noses brushing lightly from how tangled they were, he knew exactly what he agreed to as he simply said, “Yes.”
But it’s not a date. Not officially.
Shaking off any hesitation, Lance quickly knocks on the door. His mind scrambles to find the right words. Although the moment the door opens, he can only say, “You’re not Keith.”
The man standing before him is tall with a lock of white hair. He stares down at him with confusion as Lance gawks right back. He’s certain Keith apartment unit is C. Pidge has only reminded him a hundred times when picking him up.
Getting a grip on his mind, Lance begins to mumble about looking for a hot tempered dude with 70’s hair as recognition runs through the man’s eyes. Lance has only finished his half-baked explanation when the man shouts, “Keith! You’re date’s here!”
His cheeks are burning red as soon as he hears the word date. His breath gets caught in his lungs for a split second as his voice cracks a bit as he blurts, “It’s not a date!”
Lance can’t understand why the word is frightening. His hands are tucked into the pockets of his slightly ripped up jeans as he sways in place. He’s flashing the stranger a nice, warm smile. Hoping it’ll be enough to get him to stop staring like he has been for the past couple of seconds.
Upon seeing Lance’s jittery state, the man only smirks as he softly utters, “He’s been getting ready for the past four hours. Trust me, it’s a date.”
Lance opens his mouth to rebut when the man interrupts him as he shouts, “You’re date’s here Keith!”
This time a loud crash follows the man’s voice. Lance can also make out a bit of cursing before hearing Keith shout, “I’m okay! I’ll be out in a minute Lance!”
The butterflies come back again except this time, they’re everywhere. His smile becomes genuine at hearing his voice, and the thought of Keith taking four hours to get ready does all kind of things to Lance’s heart.
He’s not paying any attention to the man as he calmly says, “Well thanks for finding him. I’m parked right outside so just tell him-“
Lance is pulled out of his thoughts as the man once again interrupts him to ask, “So, how long have you known each other?”
As soon as his words registers in Lance’s mind, he can only sputter, “Uh… um… What was the question?”
Chuckling at Lance’s reaction, the man widens the door as he motions for Lance to come in. He repeats his question as Lance timidly steps inside.
Standing in his house, with a few steps between them, makes the guy seem intimidating. Scratching the back of his head, Lance mumbles, “Oh, well I guess we met in astronomy. Freshman year. But we didn’t really talk until the end of the year.”
The last word has only escaped his mouth when the man inquires, “Why the sudden change?”
He’s grinning at Lance as he waits for his answer. Yet it only makes Lance sweat as he responds, “Change?”
He’s starting to sway again as he wonders what is holding up Keith from coming out. Still, he’s smiling. Hoping it does something to hide his nerves. Although the moment the guy nods, Lance goes on autopilot as he rambles, “Uh… He shared a class with Hunk and um… He met Pidge and-”
He freezes when he hears an amused chuckle. His smile feels too forced for comfort as the guy calmly states, “That’s nice to know, but I’m asking what your intentions are with my brother.”
As soon as the words leave the stranger’s mouth, Lance feels his heart skip beats for the hundredth time. He’s going to end up with a heart attack and it’s all Keith’s fault.
Lance can’t seem to stay still as he leans back and forth. His gaze avoiding the dark grey eyes that are following his every move. Putting some space them, Lance chuckles before he babbles, “My intentions? I mean… There are no intentions? Not that I’d mind if there were intentions, but then again, is intentions the right word? It’s not like there’s a reason to declare any intentions. It’s just two friends hanging out… Two dudes being bros. No need to fret when it’s not a date. So my intentions are… uh… nonexistent?”
His ramble has him more perplexed than the drive over. The baby picture of Keith hanging on the wall would be cuter if his emotions would calm down for one second. Sensing his bafflement, the guy gives him a warm smile before mumbling, “You didn’t hear it from me, but I’m pretty sure Keith wouldn’t mind hearing your intentions. You’re both pretty much on the same page.”
He can’t help the smile that’s slowly taking over his lips. Lance has a million questions he wants to ask. Like does Keith talk about him at all? Does a goofy smile form on his lips whenever they talk? Does he happen to have any photos of Keith sleeping, and if so, how can he get one? Yet before he can ask any of these essential questions, Keith is walking out of the hallway, curious as to why Lance is looking at Shiro as if he’s meeting his long beloved idol.
“Sorry to have kept you waiting Lance.”
The small smile on Keith’s face is bashful. He’s hair is pulled into a ponytail with baby hairs sticking out. Not to mention how good Keith looks in a plain red t-shirt and black jeans.
“Don’t worry about it,” Lance murmurs as his attentions shifts. Everything stays still until a voice disrupts the silence.
“Keith, I expect you to be back by ten, and to have exact change when you return.”
Rolling his eyes, Keith begins to make his way towards the door as he says, “Ha ha, very funny Shiro. We both know your bed time’s by 9 so I’ll be sneaking in by 12.”
He flashes Shiro his most sarcastic smile before adding, “Come on Lance. Let’s leave before Shiro asks if he can tag along to “chaperone” us.”
Not needing another reason, Lance moves quickly towards Keith. He waits for him outside as he tucks his hands back into his pockets. Getting a rush at the thought that for the next few hours he has all of Keith’s attention.
Once Keith is all done saying goodbye, they’re walking side by side as they make their way to his car. In normal circumstances they would be speaking a hundred words per minute. Debating a dumb topic that would be forgotten by the end of the night. Although, in normal circumstances, Hunk and Pidge would be there to tell them to both shut up.
It’s not awkward. They’re past that stage. Yet Lance feels relief when Keith finally decides to say, “I’m really sorry for taking a while. I hope Shiro didn’t give you a hard time.”
He chuckles as he remembers what Shiro told him before Keith showed up. Man, did he have horrible timing! He shakes his head as he mentions, “He was nothing but friendly as I waited for you.”
They’re arms brush each other’s every once in a while. Though none of them move to put some distance between them. Keith rolls his eyes at his answer before stating, “Yeah. That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.”
Lance can’t help but laugh as they get into the car. All his worries disappear as Keith is blasting his music on the radio, both of them singing out loud as they chatter aimlessly.
When they reach the theater it’s not too full. Apparently it’s Classic Sunday and tonight’s chosen classic is none other than the beloved film, E.T the Extra-Terrestrial.
Lance is jumping on his toes as he tells Keith the first time he saw it with his family. How his older sibling who kept teasing him throughout the movie cried at the end. He’s talking about the blackmail he’s gained from movie Sundays when Keith decides to mention, “I haven’t seen E.T. yet. It’s good right?”
Lance knows his mouth is wide open as he stares at Keith. He can’t comprehend as Keith continues to say, “I never saw it as a kid. Don’t judge me!”
Lance can only utter, “What about TV? Freeform? Any other channel that shows family movies? How could you have gone this long without seeing E.T.?”
Laughing at his reaction, Keith says, “Well I don’t watch cable. There are streaming apps such as Netflix which I prefer. And it’s not like I live under a rock. I’ve heard about it and seen random scenes. I’ve just never seen the movie as a whole.”
Lance can’t wrap his words around his head as he states, “You’re watching it and you’re gonna love it! It’s about an alien and you like space, so just sit back and relax.”
Keith smiles genuinely at his words that Lance gets mesmerized at the sight. He’s pretty sure he’s blushing but he can’t bring himself to care.
Soon they have snacks laid out across their laps with two cokes in the cup holders. Keith has feet on the dashboard as Lance sticks his out the window. Lance can’t seem to shut up about the movie. He keeps telling Keith he’s in for a treat. How this is one of his favorite movies and to be prepared to be amazed. By now Lance is being Lance. Super-hyped Lance that can make anything interesting and Keith is loving it.
As soon as the movie begins, Lance tells Keith to be quiet and to pay attention. The Universal logo, along with the tittle and beginning credits, have just vanished when Lance whispers harshly, “Look! Look!”
Keith bits his lips to keep from chuckling at Lance as the starry night slowly turns into a forest. Keith has always like thriller movies the best, but seeing how excited Lance is makes him pay close attention to every detail. He’s a bit intrigued. Sure the quality is “bad” by today’s technology but the story is appealing so far.
One of the creatures is roaming too far from the space ship as Lance begins to mutter, “Go back! Go back!”
He’s head quickly turns to the sound to be greeted by the image of Lance’s eyes glued to the screen. He’s only been staring for a second when Lance adds, “Pay attention Keith! The action is starting.”
He rolls his eyes at his comment, but he can’t fight the small smile on his lips. The rest of the film is Lance interrupting every other minute with side comments or prepping Keith for a scene. Keith can’t stand people who talk throughout a movie and isn’t too surprised Lance is one of those people, but somehow his comments sound cute as he imagines ten year old Lance watching this movie with his family.
It’s not until the last twenty minutes that Lance is completely silent. The film is in the middle of suspense as Elliot, Michael, and a couple of friends are freeing E.T. Then everything is calm. It’s night in the scene as they find themselves back at the forest from the beginning.
He wants to keep watching as Elliot’s family arrives at the forest. He already knows he likes this movie, and if he didn’t, he would like it because from now on E.T. would remind him of Lance. Yet his eyes are drawn to the person sitting next to him as each sibling says their goodbye.
He wants to memorize this side of Lance as he’s unaware. The way his lips are in a sappy smile as his ocean blue eyes seem to be a bit watery. His legs are tucked to his chest as his head rests on his knees. He looks beautiful in a plain blue sweater. His innocence making him look childlike.
Keith doesn’t know how long it takes for Lance to realize he’s been staring, but when Elliot is asking E.T. to stay, Lance shouts, “KEITH! YOU’RE NOT EVEN PAYING ATTENTION! This is one of the best films to ever be created in history and you’re not even watching the most emotional moment of the movie! What do you have to say for yourself?”
He can’t help but smirk as he simply states, “It’s an amazing film. Easily one of my top ten films. But trust me when I say I’m looking at something more stunning.”
He wishes he had a camera at the moment to capture Lance’s wide eyed gaze as his words sink in. Lance’s cheeks are burning as he quickly moves to hide his face. Still, Keith sees his smile as he also hides his blush in the other direction.
They both enjoy the silence as the credits begin to roll. The entire ride back to his house is peaceful as Twenty One Pilots plays softly in the background. When they finally do reach his house, it’s too soon.
They’re parked right in front of the blue apartments. Lance keeps making random small talk as Keith answers all his questions about his opinion on the film. It’s only when Lance’s heart is filled with content that things get silent once again.
Their gazes wonder around as they stay seated. The music abruptly stops as the engine completely turns off, but neither one of them moves as they wait. None of them know what exactly they’re waiting for as those shy smiles begin to make an appearance on both of their faces.
Keith’s not sure if he should just leave when Lance utters, “Keith…”
His head moves on instinct as his eyes move towards Lance. His heart is pounding in his chest as he whispers, “Yeah?”
Lance is playing with his fingers as his stare goes back and forth to Keith and his hands. His mouth keeps opening to form words yet no sound is heard. He seems lost in thought, trying to find the right words as Keith holds his breath. Anxious to know what is going on in Lance’s head.
“I…”
His voice sounds lovely. Keith swears he’s never heard a voice as lovely as Lance’s. It can sooth him on his worst days and bring sunshine on his best days.
“You.”
If Keith wasn’t too impatient, he would be enjoying this sight. Lance being nervous is a rare view after all. Although right at this moment, Lance couldn’t have chosen a worse time to get tongue-tied.
“We…”
He goes silent once again as his voice vanishes for what seems to be the hundred time. His lips are moving as they try out words to find the right ones. Yet Keith feels like he’ll die by the time Lance finds them as he shouts, “Screw this! I’m done waiting!”
Lance doesn’t have a chance to ask Keith what he’s yelling about when two hands grab his face to smash their lips together.
It’s not elegant. It’s not sweet nor soft as their lips collide. It’s not even romantic in the slightest as Keith uses too much force that Lance is sure he’ll go home with a bruise on his face. It’s not the daydream Lance has been imagining since bumping into Keith at Sunny Café.
It’s better.
It’s takes a couple of seconds to realize he’s kissing Keith. He’s actually kissing Keith! And once he does, his hands are pulling him closer. His fingers undo Keith’s ponytail as they tug and pull at it. He doesn’t know how long they kiss, but when they finally pull apart they’re trying to fill their lungs with air.
Keith’s cheeks are red. A goofy smile on his lips as his eyes are half lidded. He can feel his breath on his face as Keith’s chest heaves. He leans forward until their foreheads are touching. For a second they only hear their heavy breathing when suddenly the car gets filled with laughter.
In the middle of chuckles Lance teasingly mumbles, “Why did we watch the movie when we could have been making out the entire time?”
Keith’s sure his face is permanently stuck in a smile as he coyly responds, “Well we still have two hours until midnight if you want to make up for lost time.”
Lance is sure this boy will cause him heart attack. As his eyes follow Keith’s movement as he bites his lips, Lance is pretty sure he’ll be the death of him. Though he can’t bring himself to care as he hastily whispers, “If Shiro asks, I dropped you off right away like a gentleman.”
Keith’s laughter is the last thing Lance hears before they’re kissing once again.
