I was researching holograms today. Most current holograms, or what is professionally known as volumetric displays, use technology that is somewhat dangerous (plasma, chemical mist) or use screens as a less-glamorous shortcut to project 3D images into space.

Then I found this amazing video. Apparently researchers at the University of Sussex have figured out how to levitate a tiny bead using sound, and use the bead to reflect lasers. Bonus, the use of sound lets them make the image project noise from the bead even including haptic feedback! I'm stunned at how clever and simple this is.
