I started planning out things for the Volunteer!reader fic, and I thought they would make a good headcanon post
so you get to read the way my brain processes things a bit
here's some stuff about the ghouls!
Primo’s ghouls, void guys, shadow ghouls. still elemental though
Maybe it's the easiest type of ghoul to summon., because they were the "first" after not being summoned since the 60s
Not seen very often, but most commonly found actually in the shadows.
Helpers in the greenhouse, really only talk if spoken too
Most gentle compared to the rest of the ghouls
Found out one of them is named chain
We still got alpha and omega/quintessence
Aero, crust, then lake. Thats so cute
they ghouls tend to take on the personalities of their Papa's
Secondo’s ghouls.
I just found a pic of secondo giving the ghoul masks, and ive never seen it before i love it
I think they’re the scariest of all the eras of ghouls
These guys will speak ‘out of turn’ but like only if the need to tell you something or they think you’re doing something wrong
We get one more name for now
Oh my god i never knew of some of these names, but i love them
We got old ghouls plus river now
Holy shit i just remembered special ghoul
He’s just around, not tethered to a papa, just summoned for some reason. Maybe for sister imperator for paperwork n stuff
Thank you Onyx the Fortuitous for giving him the name Phil
Kinda silly guy
likes using the paper shredder the most
Ok Terzo, now getting more names
Alpha, omega, delta, pebble, mist, ivy, ifrit, zephyr/chAir, now aether
My god
So many
More personality coming from these guys, taking after terzo
These guys will talk freely, more comfortable around people compared to the others
Still more mature than copia’s ghouls though
Speaking of copia
We got dew/sodo, rain, cumulus, cirrus, mountain, phantom, swiss, and aurora
They weren’t quite used to him after the change from terzo to copia so suddenly, but they took to him really well, especially when the summoned the two new ghouls
So far they’re the most comfortable around humans n people
Phantom and Aurora got summoned way later, so they still have more animalistic tendencies than the rest, because they’re not as ‘desensitized’ to being around humans
they get along with reader the best, mainly because they're closer in "age" (or whatever the ghoul equivalent of being in their 20s is)
i see the rest of copia's ghouls like in their 30s and 40s because they were part of the other Papa's band
the other ghouls acted more like a hive mind, especially Primo and Secondo's ghouls, but the more time went on, the more individuality they gained.
especially when the newer summoned ones learned from the previous ones.
Pt. 2
Summary: you tell your roommate that you met satanists and uhhhh the brothers are being brothers. found family with the guys :)

The bus ride feels faster on the way back. Maybe it’s just because you’re no longer anxious, but it’s still a nice journey. They’re certainly a bit of a weird bunch, but much more welcoming than you would think. It feels like there’s something much bigger going on behind the scenes, but hey like the wizard says, don’t look behind the curtain. It’s not like you’ll get that much information as an intern anyways, so you decide not to worry too much about it.
Walking back into your dorm, it seems like Maya had been through here. Probably to get some of her things if she’s staying over at Vivian’s for the whole weekend. You walk over to your desk to see a note left on one of your textbooks. “Hey!! Sorry I missed you!! Came by to grab some stuff, see you Monday <3”
Oh shit, you realize you didn’t tell her about the Satanist internship. You probably should’ve told someone you were gonna meet actual Satanists out in the middle of the woods. It ended up being ok, but not the smartest decision.
You plug in your phone to charge at your desk before texting Maya. writing out a whole lotta words in one message so she can’t interrupt you with her questions in all caps.
> hey uhh so i should’ve told you last night, but after my advising appointment i got told i needed some volunteer hours or whatever. so i applied to some satanic church and got asked to have an ‘interview’ (if you could call it that) and went to meet them in the middle of a forest”
You hold your breath as you send it to her. Since coming here, she’s basically been your roommate since freshman year, and you’ve grown fairly close. It was a little difficult to make friends in college, even though the theatre community was really nice to you when you first joined. But you never really clicked with them. It wasn’t like the theatre you knew back home, they felt more conceited here, as rude as it might be to say.
Maya responds almost immediately, replying in all caps like you thought she would.
> IM SORRY EHTA
> THE FUCK
> WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WENT TO TH E MIDDLE OF NOWHERE TO MEET SATANISTS
> LIKE ACTUAL SATANISTS
> IM SURE THEYRE LOVELY PEOPLE BUT JESUS C HRIST DUDE
Message after message came through, telling you how reckless you had been to just hop on a bus without telling people. You smile, it was nice to know someone worried this much, even if she was technically yelling at you.
You give her a few more minutes to get it out of her system, with some messages from VIvian too when Maya got a little too heated to type out her thoughts. Speaking of which, you get one more text after it calms down.
> Hey, Vivian again. She’s taking a bit of a breather rn. Sorry about ‘yelling’ at you. How’d it go?
> It went fine, kinda weird people but i didn’t feel uncomfortable or anything. They were really nice actually. The ‘head’ of the organization or whatever said she’d give me a few days to decide.
> Wait, decide? I thought this was an interview for you? To hire you?
> yeah uhhh apparently not. Theyre offering experience, even for an intern position. They said its a new position theyre trying out so it would be a bit of a learning experience for all of us
> Well I trust your instincts, sounds like a pretty good deal. I’ll explain it to Maya right now so you don’t have to deal with her ‘yelling’ at you anymore.
> thanks
Well.. that went ok. At least Vivian’s cool with it. She was always more level headed between the two, which is why it probably works out as well as it does. Or maybe she should be just as worried given the situation… Either way it worked out for you.
Maybe you have weirder friends than you originally thought…
You set your phone down and lean back into your chair, taking in a deep breath. Vivian’s right, it does sound like a good deal, even if it’s a bit strange. You decide to give it one more day before emailing Sister Imperator your answer.
For now, you stretch your arms above your head and try to motivate yourself to do some homework so you don’t have to worry about it later. Maybe get some food first, you didn’t actually get to eat earlier after sleeping in and then rushing to the Ministry. Yeah, probably focus on that first.
Back at the Ministry, the Emeritus brothers lounge around their personal living area. Because they’re part of “The Family ™”, they get their own private part of the building that no one else is allowed in, unless they’re personally invited.
Secondo sits in a large ornate chair near the fireplace, nursing a large glass of wine. Close by, Copia and Primo play some card game with Terzo heckling them in the background. After almost exposing the existence of the ghouls to the applicant, Terzo got an earful from both Primo and Sister Imperator. But that didn’t seem to put a damper on his mood after, especially now as he was at booing Copia. Copia raised his hand to throw his cards at Terzo, but before Copia could retaliate, Sister Imperator walked in, gaining the attention of the whole room.
“Well, that could’ve taken a turn, but I have a good feeling about them. What do you all think?” Sister Imperator asks the room. It takes a few seconds until someone responds, unsurprisingly it’s Terzo who speaks up first.
“They seem great, and they weren’t afraid to point out Secondo’s name right out of the gate! I expect them to liven up the place if they decide to stick around.” Sister Imperator gives him a sharp look, “Yes well, let’s hope your little slip up didn’t affect anything.”
Terzo winces at her harsh tone, slinking behind Primo to escape her gaze. While Sister’s eyes are on Primo, he takes the chance to speak, mercifully taking her attention away from Terzo. “They seem nice, if not slightly timid. It’s not everyday someone gets to meet us all at once, in our full outfits nonetheless. But it seemed like they handled it well enough without a warning.”
She nods in agreement, now moving on to Copia. He shrugs his shoulders. “Well… they certainly don’t seem scared of us. We never really leave the best first visual impression ehh… no one told me about wearing our Papa gear today though.” Copia trails off, almost pouting at the idea of being left out today. But maybe it was for the best, who would be willing to walk into the building with a guy in full skull makeup and glittery robes.
Secondo huffs in amusement from his chair, taking a sip of his wine. “Do you have something to say? Secondo?” Sister Imperator asks him, raising an eyebrow at him. He hums for a moment before responding. “They will fit in. if they choose to take the position.” And that’s all he says. Sister waits to see if he says anything else, but nothing comes out.
She nods, looking around the room one last time, then turns to leave. Copia sighs once she’s out of the room, looking down at his cards. “Do you think they’ll take the position?” he murmurs, almost to himself. Primo and Terzo think it over, but Secondo is the first to respond. “They will.” A simple sentence of two words. “Ohhh,” Terzo scoffs, “You seem so sure, whatever could you mean by that dear prophetic brother of ours?”
Secondo shakes his head with a small smirk, “Just a hunch.” While Secondo was more clairvoyant than his brothers, he never really worked towards honing it in. But they knew whenever he had a ‘hunch’ about things, they should trust it.
Pt. 2
yes, like all of them, but platonically for most of them. found family kinda deal
its really short, like 740 words but it'll get longer eventually, i can't be stopped
Walking out of your advising appointment, you couldn’t help but feel frustrated. Apparently you needed some extra credit volunteer work that no one told you about until now, nearly three years into your college career. But unfortunately you can’t even argue with them because you’re an out of state student relying on a scholarship. Walking out of the building and onto the main street you sigh. You were told you can’t volunteer with anything related to your major, so anything theatre related is a no go for some fucking reason. Maybe when you get to your dorm you can look online for any businesses or organizations with volunteer work. Coming up with some basic plan, you pull out your phone to text your roommate, Maya, that you’re on the way back.
The sun was annoyingly warm today, blazing down on your face. Your clothes absorbing the heat from the sun, luckily your dorm was only a short walk away and the trees lining the street offered shade every few seconds. Wind blowing through the leaves makes it all slightly more bearable.
Reaching your building, the air conditioning was a welcome difference from the outside. Recently, whoever managed the building finally decided that it was getting warm enough outside that blasting hot air wasn’t such a good idea anymore. Or maybe they just got it fixed for the 3rd time this month.
Entering the elevator and pressing the button to the 4th floor, you leaned against the back wall, bowing your head in exhaustion. It hadn’t necessarily been a taxing day, but just the buildup of stress over the past few weeks was enough to feel it for a lifetime. At least it was a Friday, meaning you had nowhere to go for the next two days. While hoping for your professor to cancel class on Monday, a ding alerted you to the arrival of your floor. Mustering up your strength to make it just a few more feet, you raised your head with a deep inhale and stepped out.
Opening the door slightly, you peek your head in to check if your roommate was home. As much as you liked your roommate, sometimes her high energy is a bit too much to match all the time. Luckily Maya understands and seems to sense whenever you need some time alone. Walking in you set your backpack down as you feel a buzz in your pocket. Maya texted back
> Staying at Vivian’s tonight <3 Catch up to you after the weekend probably! (Don’t tell the RA’s)
You roll your eyes and smile, shooting back a quick “np” and “stay safe” before pulling your laptop out. Opening your browser, you search for open intern positions and whatever volunteer work you can find.
Nothing catches your eye for quite some time, until one listing piques your interest. At first you thought it was nothing, actually you didn’t even want to give it a second glance after spotting the word “Clergy” in the name. But, the brief description made you pause your scrolling. A church (could you even call it a church?) that worshiped Satan, Ye olde Lucifer Morningstar himself. Your interactions with Christians and the like never really ended well, sure there were some good ones, but that’s never made you extremely friendly with them. Satanists, on the other hand, while you don’t meet many of them face to face, they’re always rather… pleasant.
You weighed your options, nothing else looked good, asking for too much, with more experience for no pay. But “The Clergy” was offering experience, the chance to shadow a few members and just learn. That’s certainly a better deal than you were expecting.
After hesitating for a few minutes, you decide to click the link to their website to at least email them and ask if the position was still available. Messing around with the wording a bit, you eventually land on a good semi-formal paragraph explaining your situation and send it on its way. Deciding that’s good enough for the day, you close your laptop, yawn, and head off to scrounge up some food.
Somewhere within the halls of the Ministry, an email notification bounces off the stone and marble walls. Neatly manicured nails tap against the keyboard and mouse, finding a new email in the inbox. She smiles, replying with a meeting time for tomorrow and a “Welcome to The Clergy” before signing off for the night.
Pt. 1

The sun from the window hits your eyes, waking you up around 9 AM. Your nose and eyes are dry this morning after forgetting to turn on your humidifier last night, but hey at least you got to sleep in. Throwing off your covers, you stumble to the bathroom, not even bothering to turn on the light. You half heartedly brush your teeth while trying to regain sentience after a deep sleep last night.
Now slightly more awake, the walk back to your bed is better coordinated. Sitting back down you feel around for your phone. Unlocking it you see a few unimportant notifications, some friends updating their lives on social media, Maya texting a picture of her cuddled in Vivian's arms bidding you a goodnight that you were asleep for.
You clear all notifications before turning to your laptop. You had brought it in bed with you to binge some show then promptly knocking out, but now it seems a good time as any to check if ‘The Clergy’ responded to you at all. Booting it up, you close the tabs from whatever sleep deprived you thought to create up last night. Opening your college’s homepage, you hesitate to check your email. Originally you thought it would be an easy rejection, but something was actually making you nervous about that idea.
Shaking your head you just decide to face it and click your email. At first you see nothing, just a few spam emails with useless information about campus, until you scroll down a little bit and see a response about only 30 minutes after you sent in the initial email. You suck in a breath of anticipation, within the first few lines a member called Sister Imperator asks you to come in for an interview today. Wait… today? “Shit.” You scramble off the bed, rushing to your closet for suitable interview clothes. In the middle of hopping around, trying to put your pants on, you realize you don’t even know where to go. Leaving your pants half on you hunch back over your bed to look up their address.
Good thing the interview was at least an hour away, and while you don’t have a car, the public transportation is pretty good in this cit- wait… Looking up the place in your maps app you realize its in the middle of a fucking forest an hour away. Fuck but with the bus system its at least two hours. “Damnitdamnitsonofabitch-” You’re back to speed dressing, zipping up your pants and choosing a good button up shirt, you grab a jacket before stuffing your laptop in your bag and pulling on some boots.
You race out to the nearest bus stop, looking up the right bus number to get to the Clergy. Sitting down in the little terminal you bounce your leg in anxiety. Fuck you hope you make it in time. Looking at the map there’s still a bit of a trek to get there from the bus, but if you catch the right bus at the right time, the walk should be no problem. Sister Imperator said the interview was at 1, it’s about 10 now, so as long as the bus runs on schedule, you should get there around 12:30. Maybe even 12:40, but the walk looks like it takes less than 10 minutes so everything should be fine. You send off a quick confirmation to Sister Imperator just as the bus arrives. Swiping your pass you sit down next to a window in the back and settle in for a long ride.
Choosing a random playlist, you decide to look up some more information about this Clergy. Going back to the website you found their listing on, not much more information was given other than their want for a kind of intern. There was something about a ghost or whatever but maybe that's just spooky Satanist talk, either way the line that mentioned it was deleted at some point probably this morning. It didn’t scare you off anyways, it's not like you’ve ever encountered ghosts before, that you can recall at least, so it shouldn’t be a problem. All you can really find on them is that they’re Satanists and they started this whole thing sometime in the 60s.
They’re pretty obscure, you’re surprised you can find anything at all, there’s not even a picture of the place. Just an address that you’re choosing to trust, which isn’t the best idea now that you’re thinking about it… But hey it’ll be an interesting story if nothing else. For now you just close your eyes for the next hour and a half and listen to your music until your stop.
As the bus makes its twists and turns, the sun flashes across your face. Thankfully it was still early spring, so the weather outside was cooler in the morning until about 3pm ish. The walk through the forest shouldn’t leave you too warm and sweaty from the sun, not the best first impression for a job interview.
Almost 2 hours later you come up to the end of the last stop on this line. Some shabby little wooden terminal that looks like it hasn’t been maintained in years. You thank the driver on your way out and bring up your phone’s map to check which trail to follow. It looked simple enough, about a 10 minute walk through a nice looking forest wasn’t bad. Starting your trek up the path, you get the sense that someone’s watching you. You keep walking, but looking around you don’t see anyone else up here. It’s not an unpleasant feeling, not hostile but wary.
Every so often you think you imagine that the sunlight peeking through the tangle of leaves and branches are eyes peering down at you, watching you move through the barely recognizable gravel path. You turned off your music to be more aware of your surroundings, just in case, but nothing triggered any alarms in your head. Despite being in a dense, dark forest that most people would be cautious about going into, it felt welcoming.
The walk is actually pleasant, a nice breeze passes by every few seconds and the constant cloud cover offers a nice cool spring day. After a few minutes you notice a few spires peeking above the trees. The feeling of being watched passes as the building makes its presence known the closer you get. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a satanic church, classic gothic architecture with beautifully stained glass windows and gargoyles. Like actual fucking gargoyles on every corner. Who the fuck knew this place was all the way out here, and so huge too? It’s at least a couple stories high, and you can even see a few other buildings attached to it in the back.
Checking your phone you notice you’re 10 minutes early, exactly the way you predicted (re. Hoped, wished, and anxiously bit your nails about) it would go. Now that you’re at the steps of the church, you hesitate. Do you knock? Is there a doorbell? You debate your options while walking up, but before you can even raise your hand to the large ornate knocker, the door hinges squeak into movement. It opens to reveal a man wearing a maroon tracksuit and black shirt that says VVULGARI. His appearance slightly startles you. He has deep dark circles around his eyes, you can’t tell if it's makeup or just a really fucked up sleep scedule. And… is he wearing a singular white contect? No that looks too real, but how else could it be that color? Maybe it is makeup because his top lip is black too. You stare at each other for a few seconds, then he speaks, your hand still in the air for a moment.
“Ah… Hello.” He awkwardly waves in your general direction. “I am Pa- er Copia. I am Copia.” He extends his hand to shake yours briefly before gesturing for you to enter. “Sister Imperator asked me to meet you at the door. We eh… didn’t expect you to be early but it's better than being late no?”
“Yeah… uhh I didn’t realize how long it would take to get here this morning, especially on the bus. You guys are pretty remote out here huh.” You say, looking around the foyer. It feels a lot more home-y than you expected despite the cold stone walls. The red carpet gives a nice bounce to your step as you start to follow this Copia guy out of the foyer.
“The bus? It’s been awhile but there is a little station out there huh. I thought it was put out of service…” he continues muttering to himself as you walk through multiple doors. You pass a few people on your way to what you assume where Sister Imperator’s office is. Quite frankly you’re putting a lot of trust in these people you don’t know. You do seem to notice the people you pass are wearing nun habits and frocks, but sexy? Some are modest and almost pious looking, so they’re customizable to their own tastes, but almost every one of them has one accessory in common. An upside down cross rosary, but with what looks like a capital G in the middle.
They stare at you and whisper to each other as you pass. Was it because you’re dressed weird? Or maybe because they’ve just never seen you before. That’s a better thought than whatever the anxiety in your mind was trying to tell you. It seems fair enough, this place really is removed from the city, It would make sense that they don’t get many “outsiders” so to speak.
Amidst Copia’s mumbling he seemed to be startled by something. “Oh mio Satana- I never asked. You are the applicant for the intern position si?” Looking away from the “nuns” you nod. “Oh yeah- yes I am. I mean it would be kinda weird if I just followed you in.” You laugh nervously while you fiddle with the cuff of your sleeve.
“Good, good, yes…” He trails off, clapping his hands together and picking up the pace he had previously. “We’ve never had quite a job like this here, so this will be new for all of us. But Sister Imperator should know what to do.” Copia looks back occasionally to make sure you’re keeping up. “Uh huh, I mean I’ve heard of volunteering for Christian churches or whatever, but I didn’t know it was a thing for Satanic churches. I didn’t even know they had physical buildings, well at least to this scale.” You say, looking out the windows to what looks like a nicely sized greenhouse and gazebo.
“We are a bit of a special situation, but she will tell you everything you need to know.” He pauses in front of a door at the end of a hallway before knocking. A woman’s muffled voice came from behind the door. “Come in.” Copia looks back at you, smiling nervously as he opens the door to a large office. Behind a huge wooden desk, sits an older woman. The gothic arched window shines natural light from behind, highlighting the stray hairs that escaped from her low bun. She looks up at you, smiling and clapping her hands together.
“Ah! Here you are, our newest little candidate.” She gestures to the two huge leather seats in front of her desk “Please sit, we have much to talk about before you decide to take the position, C? Could you go get the others? We’ll introduce them after our talk here.” You sit down hesitantly, tilting your head slightly while the leather whines under the new weight as Copia (C?) exits the room hurriedly.
Sister Imperator turns back to you, clasping her hands together and placing them on her desk. “Now, we do things differently here. You just heard me talk about the ‘others’. Like churches have Fathers, we have our own version. We have our Papas!’
You stare at her for a moment, furrowing your eyebrows. “Like… just… Papas?” She smiles at you, nodding her head, and pulls out a couple records from under her desk, each with the word “Ghost” on them. The same Ghost that was mentioned in their listing.
“Back in the 60s, when the Ministry first started, we had the idea of starting a band to further spread our reach.” She lays the records one by one on her desk, in a line. You’re assuming in the order of their release. “Each time a frontman is promoted, he gains the title of ‘Papa’. So far we have had four. I wanted you to meet them so you can form your decision, since you’ll mainly be working with them.”
You look down at the records, skeletal faces and figures staring back at you. “What will I be doing?” You ask, tracing a finger over the edges of the record covers. “Nothing too strenuous, basically a type of assistant for whichever Papa you choose for the day, or whatever hours you can manage.”
“Ok, that sounds… doable.” Just as you look back up at Sister Imperator, a knock sounds through the room. Turning in the chair, you’re met with four pairs of mismatched eyes. What caught your attention, apart from the apparently common white eye around here, was the fact that every one of them, except Copia, had skull makeup that matched the records in front of you. One of them looked much calmer than the others, holding his hands together in front of his body, wearing black and red robes. The next wore green and black robes, with a more stern expression. Although it might just be the makeup because the third one has such a different atmosphere to him, with a more stylized skull than the others.
You can’t help but wonder if they just walk around like that, full garb and everything. While looking them over, Sister Imperator stands up from behind her desk. She walks over to stand next to you, gesturing in your general direction before addressing the men.
“Thank you all for coming. As you may know, we got an applicant for the internship position. I thought it would be beneficial for them to meet you before accepting the position.” You stumble on your way up from the leather seat, feeling the need to stand while Sister Imperator tells them about you. Looking between the Papas and Sister for an awkwardly quiet moment, the second Papa approaches you. He gently reaches for your hand, waiting until you choose to place it in his palm, then he bows slightly to place a light peck on the back. For such a scary looking man, he’s very gentle with you, maybe not wanting to scare you off.
Watching him with slightly widened eyes, he backs away a step to introduce himself. “I am the second Papa Emeritus, but you may call me Secondo.” And before you can stop yourself, you ask “You’re literally named Two?” immediately slapping your hands over your mouth, kinda horrified that you just said that to his face. They all chuckle, the third one actually full belly laughing as he comes up behind Secondo and clapping him on the shoulder.
“Si, si, our father was not very creative! That old man back there is named Primo, you’ve already met little Copia, and you may know me as Terzo.” A devilish grin spreads across his face, which you guess is appropriate considering who they worship here. You raise your eyebrows as ‘Primo’ heaves a sigh, joining the others that have now moved closer to you. “You may ignore our brother Terzo over there, we do, constantly.” he says, lifting your hand like Secondo did, but holding it in both hands instead of kissing it. It doesn’t feel uncomfortable though, Primo exudes a more peaceful feeling compared to the others, and smells slightly like… roses?
“We have never offered a position like this before, but we hope you feel at ease here.” He gives one little affirming shake of your hand, then let's go, stepping back to be in line with the other Papas, who you’ve just learned are his brothers. Seemingly feeling left out, Copia peeks his head out from behind the line of siblings, offering a shy wave towards you. “We have already met earlier, but it’s nice to, eh, formally meet you.”
Terzo looks back, rolling his eyes and shaking his head while talking to you “He is our current Papa, hard to believe he’s able to manage a whole band of ghouls-” Secondo elbows him in the ribs in the middle of his sentence, giving him a stern look. “What-” you start to ask before Sister Imperator places her hands on your shoulders, attempting to lead you out of her office. “Well that’s enough of that!” she exclaims, pushing you past the gaggle of Papas. “Why don’t we take a tour through the ministry! See what our buildings have to offer!” Taking a quick look just as you pass the doorway, you catch Primo hitting Terzo on the back of his head, and talking to him in Italian, which you assume is him being reprimanded for whatever he just said.
“Do I get to ask what that was about?” You look towards Sister Imperator, who has since slowed down from her previous pace of rushing out of that room. “Don’t you worry about him, he was our more ‘out of the box’ Papa in past years.” She assures you, patting you on the back. “It’s nothing you won’t get to know eventually, if you do want to work here that is.” You exhale a single laugh, apparently there was more going on here than you originally thought.
Going through the tour, nothing very exciting happens. You pass by some other nun looking people, who you learn from Sister Imperator are called the sisters of sin. Even with Imperator, you still get strange looks, until she catches them looking.
You do meet another Papa though, apparently their father, as he’s called Nihil. He’s a strange old man, looking like he’s about to disintegrate if you walk by him too fast. But after meeting him, the tour comes to an end. As Sister Imperator walks up to the front door, she pauses. “I hope you do consider taking up the intern position. You don’t have to answer now, but I hope to see your decision within the next few days.” She smiles one last time before opening the door for you, waving as you walk out.
You pause once you reach the bottom of the front steps, it had certainly gone better than you thought. But you didn’t even know what to expect walking into this. Taking a breath, you start walking back to the little bus station. The feeling of being watched comes back, but it somehow feels calmer this time around.
Pt. 3
Summary: hehe hoho haha. uhhhh you listen to the discography of Ghost for like 5 hours (time skipped, i'm not putting you through that) and meet Terzo for like a second. (+ briefly meeting undescribed ghoul, i know who it is but you dont hehe). also reader keeps thinking its nice that people are concerned about them but that's just basic human decency that they're not used to for some reason.

The next morning, Sunday, you were able to actually sleep in. Waking up closer to 11 AM this time. You go through the same routine as yesterday, except now you don’t have to rush out to meet Satanists in the middle of nowhere.
Going over the conversations you had with Sister Imperator yesterday, you decide you were going to listen to their music today. As you got dressed, you thought a good atmosphere would be nice to get into the mood for listening to music for a couple hours at least. Putting your laptop and its charger in your bag, you set out to a cafe nearby.
A surprise cold front passed through the city last night, leaving behind a day of clouds and a pleasant chill. Exiting your dorm building, you pull your jacket closer to your body as a gust of wind nearly knocks you down. You squint your eyes against the cold air, and walk towards a cafe you found during your freshman year. It’s a nice place, soft lighting, low music, and the employees understand the need for a quiet place after the stress of a college class.
Walking down the street you barely see anyone out. It makes sense though, no one really needs to be anywhere on the weekend, especially on a cold day like this, people would rather stay in. (Or maybe they’re religious or something, you know… Sundays). Not you though, nope, nuh uh, you need a specific setting to be able to listen to music for the first time. Obviously.
About three minutes into your walk, you started to wish you brought another jacket with you, or at least put on some more layers. If it weren’t windy, it would be bearable for a measly ten minute walk, but FUCK was it god damn windy. And maybe about to rain you think as you look up at the looming clouds covering the entire sky. As your regret for not grabbing another jacket distracts your train of thought, you crash into someone. Someone very tall, and smelled like… roses? It reminded you of one of the Papas you met yesterday, but before you could even apologize they steadied you by your shoulders, muttering a quick ‘my apologies’ and walked past you. You froze for a second, blinked a couple of times, and turned to look for the person you just ran into. But as you looked around, there wasn’t anyone there. Now you know that definitely couldn’t be Mr. Primo. He might be younger than Nihil, but he’s not that much more limber.
As you’re about to start walking, you look down to find a single rose on the floor. The stem cut closer to the bud, with a kinda pin in it, like a wedding boutonniere. Well whoever that was, you hope they won't get in trouble for losing part of their outfit. You take a second to decide whether or not you wanted to chase down that person to give their flower back, but they left without any trace. So, you pick up the boutonniere and go on your way.
Just as you’re about to reach the edge of your patience with the wind, you reach the cafe. Opening the door, a burst of heat hits you, making the tip of your nose tingle with the new found warmth. Stepping inside, you look around, taking note of the most comfortable spots you could settle into. Just as you decide on one of the booths in the back, the owner pops out from the backroom and greets you. “Hey stranger! Been awhile since you last came through here.” A strong southern accent comes out full force, adding to the cozy mood of the space. You smile sheepishly, bowing your head in fake guilt. “Sorry Spencer, the start of the semester kicked my ass a little too hard this time around” you admit, walking up to the counter. Spencer was a pretty nice guy, started this cafe in his early 20s, and it’s been going strong since.
He nods knowingly, already typing in your usual order into the system. “Don’t I know it, hey, you know what. I’ll throw in a muffin, on the house. And don’t even try to say no, I know you college students and your food habits.” He grabs a cup to start on your drink, ignoring your mouth opening and closing in hesitance. Spencer rolls his eyes and takes a muffin to throw at you, effectively interrupting your silent indecision. You almost fail to catch it, fumbling with your bag to pay for the drink at least.
Sighing, you slip into the booth you chose earlier and rest your head against the cool wood, making a little thump noise. Turning to face the wall, you pull out your phone. You realize the time was only 11:34. You raise your eyebrows and shrug. Decent timing.
You stay with your head against the table until Spencer comes over with your drink only moments later. "You doin' ok?" Spencer asks, setting down the cup where you can see it. You finally sit up, picking up the drink and taking a sip. "Yeah… just in a bit of a weird situation."
"Uh oh, you wanna talk about it?" Spencer looks concerned, hovering over the table. "Nah, it's not a big deal, nothing bad. Just… weird." Spencer looks at you apprehensively. "…If you say so. But if you get into any kinda trouble just let me know. Ok?" You nod and smile, not really wanting to talk about working for Satanists to Spencer. 'It's sweet that he's concerned', you think as he walks away. You know he has his own kids, only slightly younger than you, so he probably sees them in you. But now that you have your drink, it's time to start listening to this… Ghost band. You open up your laptop. Looking them up, they have a pretty decent following. You're surprised you haven't heard of them yet, the genre seems right up your alley. Nevertheless you cue up their music from the beginning, ready to settle down for a few hours, and maybe getting some homework done in the mean time.
Customers come and go during the hours, rain starts to fall, and the sun starts to lower down in the horizon. Your listening session ends around 5 pm, finishing with their newest album, Impera. That was Copia's album, the slightly awkward man that met you at the Ministry doors. But finding some videos of their "rituals", as they call them, you can see just how big of a stage presence he really has. Maybe the makeup he puts on helps. And the band that plays with each Papa, they're just as charismatic, even more so in the more recent years. They're called the Nameless Ghouls, according to some brief internet research. Which explains the Ghouls that Terzo mentioned, but not really why he got scolded for it. But it's not like you'd have to deal with it right? Sister Imperator said you'd just be working for the Papas. You may be majoring in theatre, but you don't know anything about managing band stuff.
You take off your headphones for the first time in 5-ish hours and rub your ears. It's not the most comfortable pair, but the sound is better than earbuds. Your gaze travels across the cafe, different people moving in and out of the building, staying and going. You wonder if any of them listen to Ghost. Surely people around here would know about them since it's within the city limits. There's a bus terminal all the way out there, so it must've been popular at some point in time. Probably around when it started.
Spencer catches your eye as you lift your head from your laptop for the first time in awhile. He acknowledges you with a nod and starts to head over. He reaches your booth as you start to pack up your stuff. "Get all you needed done? That was a pretty long session of whatever you were doing." Spencer questions. "Yeah, just got introduced to a band and wanted to check them out… Hey, do you…" Standing up you trail off, not knowing how to bring up Satanists so casually.
"Do I what? You know you can ask me anything, thats what us elders are for." He chuckles at his own joke. "Well, I was just wondering if you knew anything about, as cliche this sounds, Satanists in the woods?" You decide to ask, bluntly. Spence huffs out a breath, cheeks puffing out in thought.
"Well, I know some stories from when my family first moved here. My granny got in a bit of trouble with her family when she started hanging out with 'the wrong kind'. Parent's said she was hanging with Satanists, but I just always thought that was a general term for kids that liked rock n roll." Spencer pauses to think. "Hmm. Maybe they existed? But I never heard anything about any of that stereotypical Satan stuff. No cat sacrifices or possession n stuff. If its something you're questioning, I wouldn't worry about it." He finishes with a smile.
You nod. "Well, nice to know I guess. See you later Spencer." You wave him a goodbye as you duck out of the cafe, narrowly avoiding bumping into someone just coming in. The wind had calmed somewhat, but was now replaced by rain. Heavy, thundering rain. "Fuck" you sigh. Yeah you thought it would rain sure, but not this hard. Just as you're preparing to brave the weather, a voice calls out to you from the street. Squinting out to look towards the road, you spot a hearse with Terzo's face leaning out the passenger window. His face paint somehow untouched by the rain.
"Ah yes! I thought I remembered that face! Caught in the rain huh?" Terzo yells across the thundering weather. "Uhhh yeah I guess. Didn't really check the forecast this morning!" You shout back at him, shifting on your feet. "Ack, not the most reliable these days anyways! Would you like a ride?" He asks, gesturing to the back of the hearse. And while the idea of not having to walk back home in the rain sounds nice, you don't really know him well enough. Plus, you don't know how comfy sitting in the coffin section of a hearse would be.
You shake your head at Terzo, waving a hand dismissively. "Nah, I'm fine! If I walk fast enough it won't take much time!" He nods, and pauses in thought before turning to driver. He says a couple words and turns back to you. "Well, at least take this to make your journey easier!" He shouts one last time as he pulls an umbrella from inside the car. Opening it over the passenger window, Terzo motions you over to grab it. You hesitate before hurrying over, cradling your bag to your chest to avoid getting it wet. You make it over and crouch to meet Terzo eye to eye, catching a glimpse of the driver. It was a man wearing the same style mask of Terzo's era of ghouls.
You refocus back onto the umbrella. "Are you sure? You might need it when you get home." Terzo simply smiles and pushes the handle in you hand. "Don't worry about us! We've got extras in the back." Terzo winked and leaned back into the car. The… ghoul… nodded at you in acknowledgement then turned his attention to start the car. The window rolls back up, and the hearse drives away. Leaving you to stand at the curb for a moment. Hm, guess they always wear that costume stuff then.
Turning on your heel, you start the trek back to the dorm. The large, black umbrella offering perfect protection from the rain. With this new interaction, and listening to their music for the past 5 hours, you think over the offer Sister Imperator gave you. There hasn't been any alarms in your head, warning you against it. In fact, they've all been really nice. The journey there and back would be a bit of a hassle, but nothing you're not used too already. You haven't even checked out other volunteer positions, but this feels too good to pass up.
Distracted by your thoughts, you barely noticed when you reached your dorm. Absentmindedly opening the door to your room, you're startled when Maya's face flies into your entire field of vision.
"HELLO HEY HI. HOW ARE YOU ROOMMATE THAT DECIDED NOT TO TELL ANYONE THEY WERE MEETING PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOREST." Maya yells, shaking you by the shoulders. You grab her arms to balance yourself while she re-calibrates your nervous system. "I'm doing fine, how was your weekend with Vivian?" You reply casually, voice slightly warbling with Mayas gentle assault. She pauses, staring at you, her hands still gripping your shoulders. After a few seconds, she bows her head down and sighs. "Just… Don't do that again."
"Well I'm gonna take up that position, but I'll let you know when stuff happens." You bite your lip as Maya looks back up at you, exasperated. But she concedes and lets go of your shoulders. "Alright. But be careful. The buses suck sometimes." She says as she flops onto her bed. Leaving her to rag doll, you change into some pajamas and get comfy on your own bed. Pulling out your laptop, you send an email to Sister Imperator accepting the intern position.
Maybe you should get ahead on some homework. You open some worksheet, wanting to keep your email tab open to see if Sister will answer by tonight. Especially after the last time you sent her an email. Maya flits about the room, working on her own things. Leaving the room a couple times, she finally comes back in 10 minutes later with a small pot of mac n cheese and two spoons. Wordlessly, she sneaks onto your bed and hands you a spoon. While your hands are occupied by food, Maya takes over your laptop to play Twilight. Because… why not.
Sister Imperator doesn't email you back for the rest of the night, but that's fine. You've made your decision, now the ball's in their court. All you have to do now is enjoy a night watching Twilight with your friend.
Now I’m thinking about the crossover of my volunteer!reader a fic, where sleep token ends up rooming with the clergy at their monastery or whatever. And they take an interest in reader (which sets everyone on edge, especially the ghouls, but that’s another thing for another post), but in my head they don’t physically speak, and kinda use telepathy/forwarding feelings into reader’s brain, and whenever the reader responds to them out loud everyone near them thinks they’re just fucking weird because they just think reader is just talking to themselves
And also they’re pretty physically affectionate (as we can tell when they’re on stage those freaks) so the vessels will just hang off reader for funsies. And as I’ve mentioned everyone doesn’t like the vessels hanging around the reader. I imagine that they’re kinda inhumanly gangly and tall, like in an uncanny valley kinda way that if you take a quick glance they’re something wrong, but taking a longer look it like “fixes” itself.
‘Cause to me they used to be human, but after dealing with Sleep they started turning less and less human.
I don’t have anything else for now, but I’m planning a sleep token x reader fic, not related to the volunteer!reader, that’s literally just me imagining what my life would be like if they just showed up one day at my job, asking my boss for help (I work in a theatre costume shop, so if you see any other costume designer!reader then it’s most likely me)
Also my best friend and I started OUR OWN SHARED SLEEP TOKEN FANFIC ACCOUNT because we just can’t stop ourselves if anyone’s interested (@vesselslostlovers)
Ok so I’m back, and I have ideas about volunteer!reader
I haven’t written anything on here since BEFORE Phantom and Aurora were introduced!! So it was time to come back i think
This isn’t really in any order, just whatever comes to mind
Found family Papas/ministry and gn!reader
So Phantom and Aurora get summoned almost a year after reader starts volunteering, so they’re getting used to being around humans and adjusting to being in a band n stuff
So possibly Phantom and Aurora x reader because I think it would be cute (in my head all the Impera ghouls are like 30 and up including all the other papa’s ghouls, and the two new ones are more early 20’s)
Also possible Sleep Token Crossover because i think it would be funny. Like they stay over at the ministry for some reason, and everyone (especially the ghouls) are protective of reader. Anytime the Vessels walk into the same room as reader or reader walks into a room with any of them, reader is getting escorted out by someone from the ministry with some stupid excuse
And in that case then there would be a chance of the Vessels x reader. Im thinking they’re a younger band, and the Vessels were human at one point, but after dealing with their deity Sleep, they’re not quite human anymore. Whatever they are kinda sets off the ghouls because they can’t really detect them like they would with “normal” magic. More cryptid
The Vessels actively seek out the reader and Phantom and Aurora are just dragging reader away whenever they get a whiff of the Vessels
I don’t think the Vessels will ever talk, mainly communicating telepathically to each other and just staring at anyone else lol. Just generally unsettling to everyone around them.
The more i talk about the Vessels the more i want to include them so I think I’m gonna
Soooo I’m finally writing down the college student x reader fic I’ve been putting off for at this point literal years
Here’s a kinda sneak peak of it while it’s being beta read by my best friend (the pink parts are his comments)
I’m actually so excited to be finally writing it down
Actually the reason I’m starting this is because I started writing a fanfic with said best friend and I was like “huh I should keep doing this” and so here I am
I already have the first chapter bust it’s really REALLY short and i want to get a head start on a few more chapters before publishing anything
