Since leaving the editorial fashion world and opening her store around one year ago, Alexa hasn’t looked back. It’s clear to see the joy it brings her to work in this collaborative space, creating the bracelets and necklaces that have quickly become bestsellers and gained much media attention. The charms she designs are handmade exclusively for her, by a family she met in Thailand. The endings are sourced within Germany and Alexa completes the creative process herself, crafting the finished products using top secret techniques she has developed over the past six years.
Channeling her numerous talents into the VonHey store has resulted in a lively community surrounding the space. Melanie Petersen, a former Vanity Fair colleague of Alexa’s, now works side by side with Alexa in the studio space at VonHey. Together they fill the store with their wares. Melanie produces a range of denim cushions and sweet, yet ever so practical notebooks, among other treasures under her Petersen label. Also in the store you will find a selection of vintage flannelette shirts, supplied by their friends at Joris, next door. Not to be forgotten is the range of beautiful dresses by Liebig. Given her policy of sticking to designers she knows, I would say it’s lucky Alexa has so many inspiring friends!
As for the success of the VonHey bracelets, Alexa believes this is in part due to their being excellent gifts. Aside from the always popular range in store, it is also possible to have a bracelet custom made, something that has taken the fancy of many a bride-to-be or gift-giver. With fashion week looming, Alexa is preparing to make the thousands of bracelets that will grace the goodie bags. Further down the track, she hopes to open a second store in West Berlin. It seems certain the VonHey world will continue to expand, so it’s a lovely thing to be able to visit the store now, meet the woman behind it all and appreciate being surrounded by so many wonderful things.
