I can't remember if I asked this before or not, but anyway, did you ever conceptualize a kind of "Proto-Votan" for Defiance, or are the individual languages completely independent in a similar way to English vs. Japanese, for example, in terms of origins?

No. The equivalent to this would be beyond even Proto-World (a single language from which all languages on Earth sprung): It would be the equivalent to Proto-Solar-System: A single language that gave birth to all the languages in our solar system (if there were languages spoken on Mars, Mercury, Saturn, etc.). Given that the Defiance aliens were already like 2,500 years ahead of Earth, technologically, that language would be SO remote as to have almost nothing in common with the modern languages. It would be a task for a hypersupermegacomputer, if such a thing existed; I don’t think a human being could do it.

One of the best things from last night’s episode of Defiance was getting a little snippet of what life on one of the Casti worlds was like. This appears to be Casti which orbited the sun called Sulos. In actuality, Casti was an uninhabited moon that the Indogenes terraformed in preparation for leaving the Votanis system entirely. The other planet in this system was Omec, which according to lore had been decimated by the Volge. My assumption is that Casti was a moon of Omec (though, both could’e been moons of gas giants in the system. The lore is still pretty sparse in regard to this).
