With all the hubbub about 'smart TVs', it seems everyone is overlooking the cheapest yet best deal out there -- Google TVs. More properly, Android set-top boxes; they are purpose-built Android computers meant to augment any TV with a universe of content.
Two quick items before I continue: these operate in a gray zone, or at least the ability to watch and listen to content that may be under copyright is; and streaming is not as easy as selecting a channel. But it is beyond me why anyone would pay $8+ to Netflix for their list of movies when you can watch an almost limitless number for free.
One more bit of set-up, but this is a must for everyone who uses the internet in any event: buy and use a VPN! You know the old saying -- if you're not the seller, you're the product? Well, forces ranging from your ISP to the government to big business' data miners are looking into your internet activity. Don't let them do it! They have no right to it without a warrant. For those who say 'why should I care, I don't do anything illegal?', I suggest a little light reading. Start here.
(I use Private Internet Access and am happy with it. I piggy-back it with VPNCheck, which closes selected running programs if the VPN should drop)
So once you get your Android box (I bought one similar to this [pictured above], only with 16GB storage), you'll want to load it up with XBMCHub. They're changing the name with the next release, I just can't remember what it is, it seems people have outgrown the X-Box Media Center name. From there you're off on a voyage of discovery to movies, TV series, sports, specials, adult channels (or so I hear...). You can also use the computer function to watch YouTube, surf the internet, check your mail, use Skype, etc., etc.
I should add in these days of 'sponsored content' -- I have no financial interest in any of these products and services. They're just the best I have found in their various categories.
