I had a great time becoming Legundo's 6314th kill of his career but the inherent fear of hearing 4 vampires say "they're one block away" while you're trapped in a hole is, well. Let's just say I was cooked, chat.

I find it difficult to overstate how afraid being trapped inside Oakhurst makes you. It’s all well and good for onlookers and elder vampires to talk about organisation and cooperation, but they will never understand the oppressive terror that blanketed the human POV of Oakhurst.

We, the humans, were organised. We’ve collectively been planning for a month in advance. This is what all our efforts boiled down to.

None of that mattered as soon as the voices started filtering in. At no point did we have any safety, or clarity, or relief. None of us stream-sniped, so we had no idea the vampires were relaxing at the castle, or that the day 1 storm had been a misclick! We were being hunted from minute one, with no armour, no infrastructure, disoriented and with no way to talk to others outside of the crowded VCs and expensive signs. Word of the Hunt ability began filtering in, which boiled down to: If you can hear them outside of Oakhurst’s walls, you’re already dead.

Everyone was hopped up on adrenaline, jumpy and afraid and insistent on not leaving alone. Because of how difficult it was to organise expeditions, this meant that the vast majority of people became trapped to die within Oakhurst, the Vampires having already descended for a bit of fun making escape near-impossible. None of this is a criticism of mechanics I think are wrong, but it was so clearly engineered to be a meat grinder with no winning option that it has given me a GREAT deal of insight of how someone being hunted for sport feels: Impossibly terrified, aware of the seconds ticking by, and trying to claw scraps of bravery from yourself and others so that at least you go down swinging.

Due to some lucky timing and Aussie ping, I was granted the privilege of being able to play on both event days from the very start. Being able to take my experience from day 1 and apply it to day 2 allowed me to burn twice as bright, and hit twice as hard. If you’re aware of my efforts in the planning document (The Not-Doc, The Initiative, The Monster (she/her)) then you’ll know that my motivation was to put up a decent fight.

Even with all my confidence, and all my experience fighting in the day before, you run off knowing tangibly that every step out of Oakhurst could be your last. I got close in the early game, being caught out with a bigger group by Pyro, Owen, Scott, and Avid at Lake.

My heart was beating and my hands were shaking as I backed away down the mines. If you’ve ever gotten caught up in a really good LARP, you’ll know how real these things can feel. I found corpses of people who had not been as lucky as I, the messages left by people begging for a second chance. I had such an unbelievable gameplay advantage in day 2 — it amounted to very little.

Managing to harass Apo enough to get out of town and Legundo on the southern border required such an insane amount of prep and armourless risk-taking down in the mines which was wholly dependent on a vampire not being right there, or at the very least having another victim be closer to them. Neutralising the Lake beacon was an exercise in absolute steel will. I had to frequently rally folk to stick with me, and we had to dive from the tower the tick it was neutralised because of that overwhelming, oppressive vampire threat. It was as Abolish said: The fear of Vampires will kill you faster than anything else.

Ultimately, the event was fun. I’m no stranger to asymmetrical gameplay, and I had a blast reviewing vods for my own encounters, deaths, and final stands. I suppose the roundabout point to this post is be kind to the survivors; and god I hope you all get to tap into that numbing, paralysing terror by yourselves when the plugin releases.

For Oakhurst, for Humanity.
