you had just discharged two of your patients, hands finally still for the first time in hours, when your eyes drifted and landed on your husband, jack abbot.
he stood infront of everyone with robby, briefing about the system going down to prevent a cyber attack.
black tee, camo pants, posture straight, voice steady. there was something about him like this being focused, in control, that always made your chest tighten just a little.
god, he looked good.
you were supposed to be listening. you weren't.
your mind floated somewhere far from the briefing, eyes fixed on him, soft and distant without you even realizing it.
jack's eyes flicked to you mid-sentence, just for a second. the slight tilt of your head, the way you weren't quite there… yeah, he knew that look.
the moment the briefing was done, he didn't waste time.
"hey," he murmured as he passed, low enough just for you. "come with me for a sec?"
before you could even process it, he was already guiding you down the hallway, his hand briefly behind your back, leading you into an empty room and shutting the door behind you.
he turned to you properly, a small smirk tugging at his lips.
"..hey honey"
you closed the distance instantly, arms wrapping around him like you hadn't seen him in weeks instead of hours. you buried your face into his chest, holding on a little tighter than you meant to until
"ow– hey"
you froze and immediately pulled back to look at his face, brows knitting together.
"what do you mean "ow"?? jack, what happened?"
your hands shifted, brushing against his back and he flinched slightly, but that move he just did? had told you everything.
"hey, cmon now it's nothing," he said quickly, catching your wrists gently before you could press again. his voice softened. "just a graze, sweets. i'm okay."
your eyes widened. "a graze? from your swat medic thing today??"
he huffed out a quiet breath, "yeahh, got a little too close to the action."
"what the– jack? it could've been worse." your eyes teared up a bit.
"hey look at me. i'm fine." he repeated, thumbs brushing over your hands, grounding. his gaze dropped to yours, "i'm here, aren't i?"
your hand slowly reached up again, more careful this time, brushing lightly along his side instead of his back.
"where is it?" you asked quietly.
he exhaled through his nose, glancing away. "it's just my upper back. it didn't go deep."
"didn't go deep??" you repeated, eyes snapping back to his. "jack, that's.. not reassuring."
"i know, i know-" he started, but you were already shaking your head.
"were you even checked properly? dressing? antibiotics?" the questions came quickly now, one after another, your professional brain kicking in whether he liked it or not. he is your husband after all.
you have worry in your eyes, jack looked at you and his expression softened.
"honey..." he murmured, lifting a hand to hold your cheek.
"i did get checked. got it cleaned and dressed properly."
you leaned into his touch but you didn't look convinced.
your shoulders eased, just a tiny bit.
"okay. but, i'm checking it myself later." you said, slipping back into a firm tone.
you went quiet for a while. you can't help but think how this could have went sideways.
"why didn't you tell me?"
"didn't get the chance." his lips curved faintly. "kinda busy saving people, and this cyber attack thing came up. god it's crazy."
"yeah," you huffed, but it came out softer than intended. you leaned your body onto his, carefully this time.
"still hurts?" you asked softly.
"a bit,” he admitted. he grabbed your hand and kissed your fingers, the corner of his lips reached your wedding ring.
"you make me feel better."
your hands tightened around his slightly.
for a moment, the chaos outside didn't exist. it is just the two of you, taking in the peace that you needed.
you pulled back after a second, looking up at him again, something lighter returning to your face.
"...i just discharged my patients and i'm kinda free now."
he raised a brow. "oh yeah?"
you nodded toward the hallway. "wanna come see baby jane doe? she's in peds now. she definitely can lift our spirits more," you teased him lightly.
first ever fic. english is not my first language so do expect grammar errors! lmk if there's mistakes :D no y/n used. idk how to end this, its probably so delusional but you know what, its a fanfiction haha enjoy reading!!
you're standing by the balcony of a building, while the people who are attending the gala, enjoying drinks and chatter. all you have is the cold breeze and still a half full glass of your wine.
many of the staffs are here but sadly enough, your friends are occupied with the night shift and whoever came with you to the event, was pulled into some conversation with other high rank doctors.
so you can't help but feel alone. it would be better if trinity or even dennis were here. atleast by now, the three of you could've escape from these people who'd just talk highly of themselves.
you have never been the type to attend such gala and dress up pretty. you never thought you could. growing up, a girl like you can never meet the eyes of your silly crushes. a teen who was criticised and was told that you were fat for your age. it hurts you, it stucked with you longer than you'd like to admit, thinking that you can never find someone who truly loves you, for you. but now working at one of the best hospitals, it may seem like it doesn't matter anymore, you don't really have the time to think about yourself as you are caring for the health of other people around you.
occupied by your thoughts, you didn't realised someone was standing few steps away beside you. all you see was from the corner of your eye.
it was dr brendon park. park the shark. who everyone is intimidated by his presence.
you're a bit confused of why he was here but you just kept quiet. the two of you barely interacted with each other. there were lingering glances shared a few times whenever he came down to the ed for consults, but never a conversation that last longer than 30 seconds. but even with that much interaction, you always notice him.
"why are you here alone?" he asked
you turned to him when you hear your name, observing him top to bottom from your spot. he was wearing a nice navy suit and his hair is slicked back like it usually is. he's looking handsome tonight. but wait, is he talking to you? or the drinks you had made you hallucinate?
"oh um.. just enjoying the view" it wasnt a lie, the view of the cold night was some distraction from your insecure thoughts. "how do you know my name?"
he smirked, "i know my ways. i haven't seen you inside much? are you trying to hide away from them?"
by now, you're certain you're imagining things. you didn't think he was capable of actually creating a conversation. especially with you.
"its kind of uncomfortable, never used to these kind of things. its too.. fancy", you answered.
"i understand"
the conversation goes on. both of you shared some stories and he threw in some jokes and laughs making you feel flutters in your stomach. he slipped in, "you look lovely in your dress". your face is now flushed. it must be the wine. your glass is almost empty now.
it probably has been 30 minutes since he was here with you, that you notice he was getting closer and closer to you. your laughter died down and you stared at his eyes, admiring his features on his face. you're definitely enjoying the view now.
he was smiling but then he's not, he's looking at you, staring down at your lips and he's closing the distance between the two of you.
in your head, it was all buzz. you have zero thoughts but at the same time you're thinking about everything. nervous. scared. excited. thee dr park is literally in front of you right now, about to kiss you.
but your lips never met.
all you could think of now is yourself. he probably just tipsy from his drinks. he doesn't want this. he doesn't actually like you. why would he? he definitely likes a classy, more beautiful woman than you. dr park is a high class doctor and you're just a nurse who's in the background. now all your insecurities creeping into you. you took a step back.
"they are probably looking for me– or, especially you! im gonna go inside. uhh, see you at work dr park" you rambled and picked up your pace, not to mention your heart is pounding loud. before he could say anything, you were already gone.
home is where you want to be now. it felt like a dream. but how can it be a dream where you can feel your heart pumping out from your body. yes, you like dr park. but you think he couldn't possibly like you back.
you left him standing at the very spot. he wondered what went wrong. he thought you liked him. because he does. from the first moment he went down for a consult and saw you. he remembered how your hair was done that day and saw how kind you were with your patients. he remembered everything.
your conversation was the best thing that happened to him that night, or ever. when he saw you at the balcony, standing beautiful in your dress, he saw it as a chance to talk to you. making up excuses to his senior doctor just to go to you, was something he will never regret.
part 2!! sorry if there's mischaracterization (he was there for like 2 minutes..) BUT i need brendon park to go soft for reader idc
you, jack and robby were having dinner at your cozy home. it was quiet until robby started the conversation. he didn't make it sound like a big deal at first.
"i was thinking.. of taking a sabbatical," he said, casually. robby turned to jack quickly to get a reaction, only to see he was already looking at you.
you didn't react much. you just nodded. "that's.. not too bad of an idea, actually."
you meant that. robby has worked his entire life, he has the heaviest weight that needed to be lifted off his shoulders. a break for him, made sense.
he gave you a small smile. "yeah, just gonna go away for a bit. like a vacation. to clear my head."
"i understand.. like a trip?"
"yeah, alone."
that made you pause, your gaze went to jack for a while. he didn't say a word.
you wanted to say something else but you swallowed it down. "of course, that's okay. you need some alone time.."
the conversation could've ended like that, but you have the itch to ask more.
"... for how long?"
"3 months." he said, unconcerned.
you choked on your water.
"3? like– three months??"
"it will pass fast, you won't even notice it." he answered you, without any doubt. "you have ja- each other."
"... right" you were already not convinced about this.
it felt like he already decided on how you were supposed to feel about this.
"wait, when are you leaving?"
"less than 2 weeks, sweetheart–"
the moment he said it, you feel your chest tightened angrily. you dropped your spoon harshly on the plate, shocking both men in front of you.
you pinched the middle of your brows, "fucking hell," you whispered and you took a deep breath. "you're leaving in 2 weeks? robby.. you are just telling us this.. now?"
"it's not a big deal–"
"oh really? not a big deal," you laugh in disbelief. jack had yet to say anything. robby was saying things so casually, it gave you the impression that maybe he just didn't care.
"robby. you're leaving us for three months, in less than 2 fucking weeks. and you think everything will still be normal cause it will 'pass fast'?"
"sweets, that's not what i meant." you immediately cut him off.
"is that why you bought the bike?" you questioned him but your voice was getting louder by the second. "fuck, i thought it was for convenience."
you tried to laugh it away, your gaze went to jack again. he sat quietly, furrowing his brows.
"do you– you know about this, jack?", you pointed at him.
"robby.. told me few days ago." he said softly, not wanting to exacerbate the situation.
everything in that moment broke. you couldn't believe this was happening. it wasn't just the fact that robby is leaving for 3 long months, but it was the fact of how he told you. how little of the time he spared. how he just decided things alone.
"okay," you stood up, thinking that if you say more, it will be much worse. you turned and fastened your pace up to the guestroom.
you didn't even dare to go to your shared bedroom. at this time, you couldn't. you slammed the door harder than you'd expect.
you sat on the bed and frustrated, angry tears came out. you pressed your palm into your eyes, trying to stop crying.
you know that robby needed this, to rest. you know this is the best thing for him to do. even if it meant leaving you. it was just so sudden that it felt unfair. for you, jack.. even for robby.
a soft knock broke through.
"hey..." it was jack, his voice quiet. "it's me, honey."
you didn't answer, but jack opened the door anyways. he sat beside you, wrapping one arm around your shoulder. slowly, he was rubbing circles on your arm, then rubbing your back to reassure you.
"you are allowed to be mad," he muttered.
your voice started to break, "fuck jack, i– i know he needs it, i really do. its just– why does it feel like he's.. leaving us behind?"
jack didn't answer at once. his grip tightened lightly.
"he is trying to find himself again. he's.. not replacing us. believe that, honey."
your face found his neck, burying it and you let yourself fall apart again. it felt like that was the only comfort you have left, since robby is leaving.
outside the room, it went unnoticed that robby actually followed both of you upstairs. he was standing by the door, his hand longed to touch the handle and push, only for him to hear you said 'leaving us behind'.
your words sat on his heart heavy. he felt guilt creeping into him, he took a few steps back. backing up into the wall. leaving him alone with his thoughts.
idk how to end this.... but this was one of the first ideas i had before i started writing ><
you leaned against his locker while he shoved his bag inside, the metal door clanging a little louder than usual in the already loud department.
everything still felt like it was buzzing under your skin, the monitors beeping, voices calling, stretchers rolling past. even though your shift was technically over, your body hadn't caught up yet.
john noticed.
"hey," his voice softened, one hand coming up to your arm, thumb brushing absent circles.
"rough one?"
you let out a breath you didn't realize you were holding, your forehead dropping lightly against his shoulder.
"its.. a lot," your fingers curled into the front of his scrubs, not really wanting to explain. not right now. not when he had just walked into it.
john didn't push.
instead, he tilted his head slightly, pressing a quiet kiss to your hair.
"okay. you don’t have to tell me.. yet."
that almost made it worse.
you let out a small laugh, pulling back to look at him.
"patients just kept coming. one after another. no breaks. no thinking. just… go, go, go!" you sarcastically said the last part with a smile.
he nodded, expression tightening in that way you knew meant he understood more than he wanted to. "yeaah… i figured," he glanced briefly toward the department, then back at you. "it really looks like war out there."
"feels like it too."
there was a pause, heavy. the kind that sat between two people who didn't need to fill every silence.
his hand slid up to cup your cheek, thumb brushing under your eye. he was checking if you were about to cry. you weren't. just tired. so, so tired.
"you should go home and sleep," he murmured.
"you know i will," you nodded, then hesitated. “well.. right after a drink. i told langdon and donnie i'd join them by the park."
he smiled, soft and a little teasing. "of course you did."
"what?" you nudged him lightly.
"you had the worst shift ever and your solution is to have a drink"
"exactly." you said, completely serious.
that got a small laugh out of him, the tension easing from his shoulders.
"fair enough babe. you got your beer, i got my coffee,"
he reached behind you, grabbing his coffee from his locker and taking a sip before offering it to you without thinking. you took it, sipping from the same spot, the familiar comfort of it grounding you more than anything else had all day.
"just dont miss me too bad," he added, tone light but his eyes lingering on you a second longer than usual.
you rolled your eyes, but your smile softened.
"oh please. you wish," you joked.
"woww"
"i know. heartbreaking isn't it?"
john leaned in again, this time pressing a quick kiss to your lips. gentle, but it made you want to stay a little longer.
"text me when you get home, yeah," he said quietly.
"of course. um.. try not to die out there,"
"no promises," he smirked, then softened again. "hey.. i'm serious. rest tonight, okay? even though you are off tomorrow. no overthinking."
you exhaled, nodding. "okay."
"that's my girl."
you gave him one last hug, arms wrapping tighter this time, like you were trying to leave some of the weight of your shift with him.
"see you in 12 hours, dr shen" you murmured against him.
john held you just a second longer before letting go. "see you in 12, dr shen."
