LEADBOTTOM Andean Condor Vultur gryphus ©Laura Quick Hatched at the Zoo in 1983, Leadbottom had to be hand raised because he kept falling out of his nest—hence his name. After many years with the World of Birds Show, he developed some health issues and eventually retired to his current exhibit. Like other New World vultures, the Andean condor has the unusual habit of urohidrosis: it often empties its cloaca onto its legs and feet. A cooling effect through evaporation has been proposed as a reason for this behavior, but it does not make any sense in the cold Andean habitat of the bird. Because of this habit, their legs are often streaked with a white buildup of uric acid. #andeancondor #condor #southamerica #vulturgryphus #vulture #carrion #scavenger #©lauraquick #lazoo #losangeleszooandbotanicalgardens #losangeleszoo #bird #animal #leadbottom https://www.instagram.com/p/B7R5Awpn1dx/?igshid=q301rhbup7w
ANDEAN CONDOR Vultur gryphus ©Laura Quick Found in the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America, the Andean condor is the largest flying bird in the world by combined measurement of weight and wingspan. It has a maximum wingspan of 3.3 m (10 ft 10 in) exceeded only by the wingspans of four seabirds and water birds and weight up to 30 lbs. A large black vulture with a ruff of white feathers surrounding the base of the neck and, especially in the male, large white patches on the wings. In the male, there is a wattle on the neck and a large, comb or caruncle on the crown of the head. Unlike most birds of prey, the male is larger than the female. Primarily a scavenger, feeding on carrion. It prefers large carcasses, such as those of deer or cattle. Andean condors reach sexual maturity at 5-6 years of age and nest at elevations of up to 5,000 m (16,000 ft), mostly on inaccessible rock ledges. 1 or 2 eggs are usually laid. It is one of the world’s longest-living birds. Lifespan of over 70 years in some cases. The Andean condor is considered near threatened by the IUCN. It is threatened by habitat loss and by secondary poisoning from carcasses killed by hunters. Captive breeding programs have been instituted in several countries. #andeancondor #vulturgryphus #©lauraquick #nearthreatened #largestflyingbird #southamerica #andes #caruncle #nationalsymbol #bird #animal #lazoo #losangeleszooandbotanicalgardens #losangeleszoo https://www.instagram.com/p/B45m43FHm9M/?igshid=o8jagrqwrl8v
The canyon is immense, twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the US, the Colca Canyon is one of the deepest on Earth. - There is a gorgeous road that runs along the edge of the canyon, with epic views, raw tunnels, and a lookout point (mirador) known as Cruz del Condor. - It is here that in the morning, the massive Andean Condor rises on the thermals, soaring at eye-level. - At this mirador, the canyon floor is 1,200 m (3,900 ft) below the rim of the canyon. - The condors were testing the thermals, gliding up then stopping to perch if the rising warmth wasn’t sufficient for effortless flight. - It was incredible once they finally took to the air, their massive, outstretched wings gliding like kites, with their tails turning like rudders. - They would fly right in front at eye level, first a few, then 11, and then there must have been another 12 behind me, higher up the mountain. - The canyon cliffs are used as communal roosts by Andean Condors for protection from weather and predators. - The condors leave each morning, using the thermals to gain enough height to use their exceptional eyesight to search for food. As the largest flying bird by a measure of weight and wingspan, sometimes you can hear the wind rustling through their feathers as they sail by. - I stopped at a little shack to buy some cactus fruit and noticed these animals... You can pay to have your photo taken with the large hawk, I simply asked why it was there and what happened to it. The merchant did not respond to the questions, simply telling me I could put it on my arm. It’s clear the bird was in good shape and could be free were it not taken from a nest as a chick and used as a photo prop for tourists. - You vote with your money. - #andeancondor #vulturgryphus #colcacanyon #wildlife #peru #cruzdelcondor #mirador #votewithyourdollar #staywild Music by @shikashikacollective (at Cañón del Colca / Colca Canyon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz-2YvHhUfm/?igshid=5a0ujsjk66a0
