Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, Armenia
Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, located in Armenia, was built during the 1970s and officially became operational on 22 December 1976. The plant consisted of two VVER-440 Model V230 reactors (‘VVER’ stands for water-water energy reactor; i.e. water-cooled water-moderated energy reactor), although the first reactor was decommissioned in 1989 due to the earthquake in Armenia in 1988. Both reactors were initially shut down, but Unit 2 was restarted in 1995 because energy shortages were created in Armenia as the result of economic and transportation blockades by Azerbaijan and its ally Turkey.
The plant produces around 40% of Armenia’s electricity and is one of the oldest nuclear power plants without a primary containment structure still in operation today. Despite the plant lying near earthquake-prone terrain, the International Atomic Energy Agency has found that the plant has adequate safety and can function beyond its design lifespan. The plant has received numerous safety upgrades since its only operating unit was restarted in 1995, and both Armenian authorities and nuclear experts have dismissed the possibility of a “repeat of Fukushima.”
