I got a great a gift in the mail today for going to grad school. It is a second American edition of A Room of One’s Own, by Virginia Woolf. This book was my inspiration to get my MLIS degree and become an LIS professional. Also, the little butter dish is a gift from a great friend of mine.

Charleston Trust

I am asked a great deal where would my dream job be. Why Charleston, the farmhouse of Vanessa Bell, in Sussex England. I would love to work as a librarian or archivist at Charleston Trust. To be able to touch the things the Bloomsbury group held would be amazing. I adore the Bloomsbury group and could easily have seen myself living and thriving in their time. This group of intellectuals who were artist, writers, economist, publishers and politicians changed the face of the modern world. They were in a covert sense Bohemians. The outward facade was Edwardian to the core. Inside they lived and loved by their rules – and rebelled against the Victorian upbringing, they had. What better place to be a librarian than where you heroes walked – created and breathed.

This would be the guiding philosophy for me as a librarian. To provide great service and quality care to anyone who needed it.  I always think of Victorian and Edwardian women who watched as their brothers went off to school, and did not have access to the same university education. They could not even enter an academic or public library without a male escort or a letter of introduction from a dean.  I want to  help all that need it – and impart my love of the written word along the way. You do not become a librarian for money but for the love of helping – imparting knowledge and passing on your love of books.
