The Joker (or Jester)

The Joker archetype urges us to enjoy the process of our lives. Although the Joker can be prone to laziness and dissipation, the positive Joker invites us all out to play, showing us how to turn our work, our interactions with others, and even the most mundane tasks into joy. The goal of the Joker is perhaps the wisest goal of all, which is simply to enjoy life as it is, with all of its paradoxes and dilemmas. What causes most dread in the Joker is a lack of stimulation and not being "alive." The Joker seeks to simply "be" in the present moment, perhaps like the Sage, but unlike the Sage may not truly understand the depths of this.

Shadow Side: The glutton. This will manifest itself in your life as slothful, unmotivated and hedonistic behavior that are wholly defined by lust, without any sense of wise direction or self-control.

I snagged a commission from @merwild of my WoW OC, Vy’thanis Felbane. A young Netherwing dragon masquerading as a blood elf mage, he’s one of my warmest and friendliest characters. He wants the world to be a nice place, but just because he’s nice doesn’t mean he’s toothless. From the lovely bump in his nose to the prettiest pearl I’ve ever seen painted to the beautifully understated clothing detail, I am utterly thrilled by every bit!

This piece adds to the small collection of art that I’m building, including Vyth’s roommate Zayneth Shadowspite, and Zay’s sister, Tziska Shadowspite.

It has been one of my greatest pleasures to be able to not only shower @merwild with my money, but to introduce friends to their work and watch them get beautiful commissions as well. Their art just fills me with joy, and the things they draw for Final Fantasy and illustrations of book characters just make me want to experience those fandoms myself. Thank you so much, and I look forward to the next time you open commissions!

I bought this lovely piece to represent a stained glass window that may have been made to help cheer up a certain sad azure netherwing drake.

IC fact for Vy’thanis:

Most of his ability to read and write is self-taught. He had a brief bit of instruction from the Scryers after he brought an injured Illidari to them, but no one really had the time for teaching a mostly “mute” elf to read. He picked up as much of the language as possible just from staying near the healers and by the time he left the Sanctum of the Stars, he’d picked up the skills for advanced field triage - if not quite all the words yet.

For someone who keeps a small hoard of trinkets and shiny items, there’s very little that’s of personal significance to Vy’thanis. It’s all important...and none of it’s important.

Crystal memory sphere with nothing recorded on it. This was a Winter Veil gift from Taleyriel and is fairly precious to him. He has no idea yet what memory he wants to put in it.

Wax seal stamp of a dragon. Zay got this for Vyth not long after he became the blond’s “official” mail-opener and reader. It was a silly gesture to help his friend feel important, but it worked.

A battered hardback book. It’s a copy of Blood on the Sands, an adventure novel set in Uldum of plucky explorers and wicked black dragons. Though he secretly roots for the dragons every time, Vyth has read and re-read this book many times. It’s his favorite bit of fiction because the author seemed to take great care outlining things from the dragons’ perspective - realistic or not. He’s fond of any novels that include dragons, but he’s got a special fondness for adventure stories and this is one of the first he really devoured in learning to read.

A small Scryers combat badge. The very first thing Vyth did as an elf was carry the dying elf who’d saved him into a Scryers compound for healing. In the ensuing months while Zayneth was being tended, the young dragon learned a great deal about how to act like an elf from observing the Scryers at the Sanctum of the Stars. Though he knew very little about melee combat, he ended up with a sword and his nether magic during an attack by the Coilskar on the compound. One of the healers he’d become well-acquainted with gave him the combat badge to identify him as a Scryer; it was the first time he belonged to any mortal organization. He still thinks of the Scryers fondly - though it almost never comes up in conversation.

I’ve been informed that this is three each for Vy’thanis and for Hadeon.

Vy’thanis - 

Fun fact #1: Though in all appearance as a half-trained battle mage, Vy’thanis specializes in fire magic, he’s actually pulling arcane energy directly from the nether (little n nether as the space between spaces and fabric of energy ‘stuff’ where arcane comes from, as opposed to big N Nether which is the Twisting Nether full of fel and demons and interdimensional naaru spaceships).

Fun fact #2: Vy’thanis seems to be a powerful but rather inept mage when he’s off the battlefield. While he often cultivates a certain ineptitude in order to be underestimated, he does actually need more training as a mage.

Fun fact #3: As with many dragons in the game who aren’t named Onyxia, Vythaku keeps quiet about what he is but doesn’t necessarily treat it like a vital state secret. If you need to know, he’ll tell you - and if you find out on your own, he won’t be upset unless you threaten to kill him.

Hadeon - 

Fun fact #1: Undeath came to Hadeon in a different way than it came to many death knights. As such, he’s rarely plagued with memory problems in relation to his past life or his deeds since dying. He did forget or block out a few important things that only manifest when the right emotional triggers are found - for example, his love of the ocean took, quite literally, seeing the ocean again for the first time since his death.

Fun fact #2: The string of clay tablets Hadeon wears tied around his left bicep are actually his rune-weapon. The weapons he carries in battle are often blunt and completely mundane.

Fun fact #3: Hadeon has a very clear “tell” that’s important to understanding him in many interactions. He will glance skyward as if asking the heavens for patience - or arguing with someone in the sky.

Fun fact #1: Vythaku is somewhere between twenty and forty years old. He’s not real certain. (Neither is his writer; damn fucked-up Blizz timelines.)

Fun fact #2: Although Vy’thanis is built like a warrior and can wield a sword well enough to not embarrass himself, he finds melee combat generally too complex due to spatial awareness reasons. When he’s in combat, he forgets that he’s “small” and ends up taking ridiculous risks because he overestimates where his “edges” are.

Fun fact #3: When he walked, Vy’thanis did not walk softly. At all. He puts his weight down quite heavily when he moves. This seriously irritates his downstairs neighbor.

Fun fact #4: Vy’thanis adores citrus fruits, even citrus-flavored candy. He’s easy to bribe with lemon drops or candied oranges.
