Life Mimics Art

I was inventing new furnitures for the game over the past couple weeks. I made this hall table and I couldn't think of anything for the catalog description so I just wrote down something about it being a place for your sims to set their mail. I stuck it in my game earlier to check the shadows and slots and guess what????!!! One of my test sims got the mail and put it on the table. LOL.

I think my blacks are too dark. The wood grain looks nice when it's light in the game but they sure are dark. Guess I'll have to go through and lighten all the templates I used that black wood more than I did already.

McCall's M7952 update: fixing the neckline and attaching the skirt

Here's the gaping neckline. It's mostly visible from the side. If this wasn't a bra-less garment I probably wouldn't even mind so much.

To take in the neckline I sewed a little dart at the outer corner where the facing meets the strap.

Then tried on again:

Better but still kinda floppy. This also did nothing for the straps cutting into my underarm.

So I extended the dart over the whole bodice:

I also took the tiniest bit of width away from the center front seam of the facing .

Then tried on again:

And that did the trick! Neckline now lies flat!

The straps still sit too far back for my liking, but sometimes you gotta pick your battles and I'm not willing to change the bodice even more or make the straps less wide.

I went ahead and attached the skirt, which I had sewn up before:

It does fit! Buuuut...-of course- the skirt is a little too long. I prefer my skirts to end just shy of the knee. I find that it's the most flattering length for me.

I also feel that the skirt is a little too snug around my bum. I mean the dress is mostly white! and even with lining, I wouldn't want any panty lines... or popping buttons or other warderobe malfunctions...

The waist on the other hand is a little too wide. Turns out I cut my waistband a little too short and the skirt is slighty wider than the waistband, otherwise I should have known that this would be an issue.

This is an easy fix though. I'll make the back darts a little deeper, or better yet, I'm considering adding pleats like they did in the front, so there's a little extra fabric to accomodate my bum.

The collar saga continues

This morning I remembered I had a dress with a similar neckline to the one I'm trying to draft in my warderobe already!

Note how my back neckline is much rounder? - That needs adjusting.

I also noticed that on the shoulder seam of the dress was farther back than on my mock-up:

The shoulder seam on my mock-up was nearly 1.5cm outwards (towards the front) from my dress form's shoulder point.

To be honest I don't know if this alteration makes a huge difference in the grand scheme of things but I'm desperate and willing to try!

After I sewed up my second bodice mock up I put the dress in top of it and it's not too bad. It's really not too bad! It nearly lines up perfectly except for the back which ended up being a little too straight now.

But hey! At least I got the bodice to fit perfectly now!

I got tired of wasting so much fabric on the collar mock-ups, since this is mock-up No. 3.2.1 or something like that, so I just work with a paper mock-up for now.

After all this time I'm still not happy with it. Maybe -just maybe- I'm being too perfectionistic. I've told myself I'm only going to fix the back one more time and do one more collar mock-up and then call it as good as it's gonna get.

Today is wednesday right?!

Here's the idea I'm working on this week:

I must admit this isn't really an original design as it's based off of this dress:

Here are some features of the dress above:

deep v neckline with shawl/oversized eton-collar hybrid?

decorative! buttons front

3/4 sleeves

center back zip

pleated skirt

waist belt

pockets in side seam!

My dress will (hopefully) have:

deep v neckline with aforementioned collar

full button down front

t-shirt sleeves aka shorter than the original

circle or half circle skirt, no pleats

waistband

sewn on pockets!

So I went ahead and started patterning:

I immediately noticed that the basic bodice shape could be drafted from my picnic top pattern (which I also altered and got to fit now!)

Some alterations I made right away were:

added seam at center back (since I'm not going to add a zip this isn't a must though!)

elongated the pattern by 3.3cm

and of course altered the neckline

Here's a first impression:

Not too bad but still has a long way to go! The back neckline is much straighter on the original dress and v-neck seems much wider. I'm still figuring out just how wide I can making without my bra strap being exposed. the collar is also too long in the front but that's an easy fix:

Now I have to move the collar point a little bit more to center front (it's supposed to point to the bust apex). But this is all fine tuning for when I'm happy with the neckline!

Since this is already picture-heavy I didn't include the collar construction. Let me know if you're interested in seeing it! I am still figuring this out myself but maybe it's interesting to watch?
