Maybe it’s a place they love. A little hidden gem or hole in the wall spot they’ve been to a bunch of times, but bringing you there makes it feel special all over again.

When you get there, they’re watching your reaction more than the place itself.

Or maybe it’s something small they saw earlier. A song, a picture, something random that made them think of you.

And honestly, the best part for them isn’t even the thing they’re showing you.

It’s just getting to share it with you!

Something that gets me about iron lung is that “this is bigger than all of us” is never framed as true and fair. No, that doesn’t make what Simon goes through worth it. It isn’t a triumph. There’s a horror to be had in how the last thing he can do to take back a shred of autonomy in his life is cling onto the thing that was the reasoning for sentencing him to torture and death. “You deserve this.” It’s not true, and it’s not fair, and he dies anyway, and we don’t even know if the blackbox truly holds anything good. It’s a hopeful ending, maybe, but we don’t even know for sure.
