“Oh my beloved honeybear. I didn’t know you were waiting for me.”
even though it was all he could think of saying, he knew it wasn't going to help anything. they'd lost half their friends, they'd lost teammates and without any sort of plan he had no idea how they were going to go forward. he was still trying to deal with the loss of his best friend for the fourth time and while he had no problem burying it all, there were cracks stating to show. how could he be the pillar everyone needed when he could barely hold himself together? steve didn't know but he would find a way. he was a soldier, he was a leader and he would find a way of holding it together long enough for them to figure out a plan. "i know," he told colonel rhodes, knowing they would figure out how to go forward. if tony was there — no one had heard from him and all they could assume was that he'd died. which meant they were on their own. "i think we need to figure out just how many of our friends are gone and see if we can figure out where to go from here. shuri might know if there's anything we can do and if she can't —" they were in far more trouble than they thought if she couldn't help them out.

sam pursed their lips, doing their best not to smile as they looked down at him. “the hell you’re not,” they muttered, stepping closer, eyebrows raised. “not only are you being rude, you’re ordering me around, too, huh? well, i guess if i have to, colonel,” they quipped, sitting down right on top of the other. “this better, sir?”

sam couldn’t help the pang of guilt they felt at rhodey’s words, and the nickname definitely didn’t help. they didn’t want to fight about this, not really, but, well. there was a reason they were being discreet about the whole thing. and if sam was being honest with themself, they were scared. “i know,” they finally said, turning their hand and grabbing rhodey’s with their own, tangling their fingers together, though they weren’t quite meeting his eyes. “i know. and i’m sorry. i just– i wish it could be different, but. we can’t. not yet, at least.”
