Everyone will think I'm terrible and a monster for saying this but...

I think Tonks died first and that Remus saw her die.

This is all my personal opinion so it's okay of you don't agree;

I think the reason Remus didn't want to with Tonks at first is that he was scared he's going to lose her. Yes, he also was a werewolf and could bit her and he was poor etc.. But that were only excuses he gave both her and him because he couldn't admit he was afraid. I didn't think about this at all but I've seen it in a lot of fics and it made sense. Up until that point, Remus had lost everyone he ever loved and who loved him. His mother, James, Lily, Sirius... they were all the closest to him and Remus, being the self-deprecating man he is, blamed himself for all of their deaths. That's why he tried do distance himself from Tonks. "Everyone who has ever loved me, died. You can't die as well. I won't let that happen."

So... when the Battle of Hogwarts came, Remus said goodbye to his wife and son and left thinking that they are going to stay alive. Dora is going to stay alive. But then she follows him. He's dueling Dolohov and he can hear her shouting his name. She's running across the battlefield towards him and as she's busy looking at him, Bellatrix kills her. Remus just figures out that had she not be looking for him and be focused, she may have lived. So he blames himself again for letting another person he loves die and now, the guilt is so big that Remus can't fight anymore. He runs towards his wife's dead body, gets on his knees, takes her in his arms - and gives up. His wand is far from him and he can hear Dolohov speaking the killing curse. He doesn't care. The person he loved most dearly, with his whole life, unconditionally, has died because of him and he can't find another reason to fight. Sure he had Teddy, but he couldn't live in a world where his Dora wasn't present.
