It’s another Friday Fish Fry, celebrating Wisconsin’s slightly-quirky Friday night tradition of frying up nearly any species of fish or other seafood, and serving it with healthy portions of coleslaw, potatoes, rye bread, and plenty of beer -- preferably locally brewed. One of Milwaukee’s historic industrial breweries was the A. Gettelman Brewing Company, founded in 1856 and absorbed by Miller Brewing Company in 1961. So, today we present The Sportsman's Way, How to Prepare Fish and Sea Food, written by “Culinary Expert” Ruth Elizabeth Mills, published in 1946 by Frederic H. Girnau Creations of Minneapolis, and presented “Compliments of A. Gettelman Brewing Company.” While the title may appear to appeal to the sportsman, make no mistake, it’s the women of the sportsman's household who will be doing all the cooking, as Gettelman makes clear:
The American housewife is one of the finest purchasing agents in the world. To her we dedicate this book. For food, clothing, comfort and happiness, we all depend on her, To do her job well the housewife has to be a good judge of true values. . . . That is why housewives depend on GETTELMAN Milwaukee Beer.
So, where are we going tonight? Well, Milwaukee is a city with many cultures and vibrant ethic neighborhoods, including the long-standing and fastest-growing Latino community centered mainly in Milwaukee’s near south side, home to innumerable restaurants boasting the best Hispanic cuisine of the western hemisphere. So many to choose from!! What to do?!Â
Well, at the heart of the community is Centro de Communidad Unida, the United Community Center (UCC), located on Walker Square in the very center of Milwaukee's historic Walker’s Point district. An integral part of the UCC is CafĂ© el Sol, featuring savory Mexican and Puerto Rican fare (Max just loves the pasteles, which remind him so much of his family’s Puerto Rican food ways).Â
The only daily seafood on the menu is shrimp, which is prepared as Camarones en Salsa a su Gusto. But, being Wisconsinites, they also serve one of the finest Friday-night, all-you-can-eat, Fish dinners in the South Side, voted in 2003 by readers of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as one of the "Best Ethnic Adaptations" of this state-wide fish fry tradition. You can have your Latin-style fried or broiled Haddock with all kinds of sides, including fries, coleslaw, Puerto Rican rice, plantain chips, beans, salad, and complimentary live Latin music! Check out this 2015 Fox 6 Studio A profile, and see if you can resist.
We’ll take our Latin-infused Fish Fry at the UCC’s Café el Sol with plantain chips, Puerto Rican rice, and a Margarita! Oh, and we’ll have an order of Pastel con Arroz Puertorriqueño to go. Gracias!!
