How do we as cities manage extreme heat? In The Sonoran desert we understand the effects of heat and if we tallied all the heat related deaths and illnesses it might be called a public health crisis. There were Over 2600 ER visits in az in 2016 and 219 deaths. 95% of these issues happen from May to September. I’m currently working in the neighborhood in between mesa dr and Horne and Main st and 8th st south of broadway on a heat action plan. This is one of the hottest neighborhoods in the valley and coincidentally has a high level of poverty. I have been knocking on doors in this neighborhood and asking questions regarding their walk paths, their cooling systems and their transit habits. Half of the time I have to use Spanish to communicate. Most of the time residents don’t recognize heat as a main concern and don’t recognize the symptoms of heat related illnesses. Most of the walkers and transit users I encounter are sunburned or their skin is affected greatly by the sun.
