LOST & FOUND

The body of violinist Wallace Hartley was found 10 days after the sinking of the Titanic along with his water damaged violin. His fiancé Maria requested it back.

In 2006, the violin was discovered in her attic. The violin still had an engraved plaque on it that read, "For Wallace on the occasion of our engagement. From Maria."

After years of study, it was verified authentic, and went up for auction in 2013.

The violin was sold for $1.7 million, and is considered to be one of the most important artifacts ever recovered from the Titanic.

TITANIC

            Wallace Hartley was an English violinist and bandleader on the Titanic and was part of the eight-member band which played when the RMS Titanic sunk in 1912; all the band fell victim to the disaster. When the Titanic hit an iceberg on 14 April and began to sink, Hartley and his band started playing music to help keep passengers calm as passengers were loaded into the lifeboats. They continued to play until the very end. The final song played by the band is unknown; however one of the scores was ‘Nearer, My God, to Thee’. Wireless officer, Harold Bride said he heard the band playing the song ‘Autumn’. It was ‘Nearer, My God, to Thee’, the Priopior Deo version which was played at his memorial and funeral.

            Hartley’s body was one which was recovered two weeks after the sinking. His body was found fully dressed with his music case strapped to his body. His body was returned to England by ship, and his father Albion met the ship at Liverpool and brought his son back to his hometown of Colne, Lancashire. His funeral took place on 18 May 1912. His headstone contained a carved violin at its base. His violin and his leather case which had belonged to his fiancée after being retrieved after the sinking.

Today marks 112 years of the Sinking of the Titanic.

Something about this ship has a chokehold on me.

Maybe it's the stories, the well-known ones, and the ones less well known. Heroism and Cowardice.

Maybe it's the hubris of believing we'd beaten the ocean.

Maybe it's the fact it's a massive part of Irish History

Maybe I love the film an insane amount

Maybe it's how gorgeous she still is despite 112 years under the sea.

Or maybe it's the fact my dad had many books and it's always been something I can share with him.

Whichever way, Titanic is a part of my life, that may be weird but hey, there are worse things to be hyperfixated on.

Anyway, 1517 died 112 years ago because, amongst other things, Money and appearance meant more than lives.

Surprising how that never changes.
