Three Weeks
Part 26 of On The Inside With Elizabeth Olsen
Word Count: ~6K
masterlist
Liz POV
It's been three weeks since Y/N left. Three weeks since I've spoken to my sister Mary-Kate and three weeks since speaking to Y/N's mother. I wish I could say that all of this was easy or made better due to the fact that I'm actively trying to live a life that doesn't involve me missing Y/N, but it sucks.
This is one of the hardest things I've had to do.
But here I am, waking up in my bedroom alone and sad, for you guessed it, the third week in a row. I think I've slowly morphed into my Character Leigh Shaw. That's who I am now.
A cold, depressed bitch missing her love and looking for answers.
Anywho, I did some of the cliche break-up things you're supposed to do! I cried while watching Rom-Coms and eating ice cream. I dyed my hair! Goodbye, dirty blonde, and hello, brunette Lizzie. I made sure to tell my friends that I was doing better when in reality, I was not.
Scarlett and Aubrey were quick to see through that shit.
That led to a very passive-aggressive forced lunch with a seven-month pregnant Scarlett and her daughter Rose who very sweetly had no clue what was going on. Colin was set to join, but I'm certain Scar made him stay home.
On the other hand, Aubrey called me out on everything once I spilled it all. But she wasn't as upset with me as other people had been. But she made sure that when I'm in LA that I stay with her since Robbie is still occupying our/my house. I told her that wouldn't be necessary since I have other friends and family to stay with but saying no to Aubrey is weirdly tricky.
Also, I took a page out of Y/N's book. Literally. I started writing. Okay, not like writing writing like Y/N but writing my thoughts and what I want to say the next to I see my Coffee Girl. I have a pile of envelopes ready to go. Each one is different but laced with love. They constantly stay in my purse. I'm afraid I'll lose them otherwise.
I know I haven't talked to her since, but.. this hasn't stopped me from trying. No calls, just texts every once in a while. Letting her know that I'm thinking about her and her safety. I know she's doing okay, thanks to certain people, but I can't wait to see that smile shine on her face whether I'm an inch away or thousands of miles.
I yawn and get the sleep out of my eyes before making my way into the kitchen. I haven't been eating the best or a lot lately, so maybe making a big breakfast will help today. It didn't help last week, but I can try again.
Waffles. Eggs. Cut up fresh fruit from my rooftop garden.
This is what I ended up making, and to my surprise and delight, I ended up eating a good majority of it. I compost what I don't eat because I'm not sure when I'm returning.
Oh, did I not mention? I'm flying to Los Angeles today.
I still have a couple of hours until my flight, and I packed last night, so I might as well water and say goodbye to my plants before making one final trip to Y/N's apartment.
Y/N POV
Today of all days, I have to wake up feeling like I got hit by a train.
Everything hurts. My head is pounding like a hammer. My nose is stuffed but also running. Every time I try to clear my throat, it feels like tiny needles are being dragged down my esophagus. This is awful. I knew something was happening, but I blamed it on allergies. I should've known when Nick said, "it's just a cough," he was lying. It's never just a cough. If he wasn't one of the nicest men I've ever met, I'd be so pissed at him.
Speaking of Nick. Since the last time he confided in me that he has feelings for my mom, nothing has changed. My mom knows but doesn't want to pursue a relationship. I understand her completely. I'm not saying I want to see her and Nick be together, especially since no one can replace Davey.
I know Nick wouldn't be, but that doesn't make it easier. But my mom and him have a perfect friendship right now. At the drop of a hat, they're there for each other. Wait-
What's that ringing?
I turn my head as I get pulled from my thoughts. I reach over and answer my phone with a scratchy throat.
"Hello?"
"Pumpkin? Are you alright? You sound terrible." Thanks, mom.
"I think Nick got me sick." My mom groans into the phone. "I told him to rest and that we'd have dinner together next time you visit, but no, he had to make a home-cooked meal for you."
That's sweet. I smile through the pain as she continues her rant. "He's just like your father at times, I swear." My mom laughs at her own words. I don't think she fully realized she just compared Nick to Davey, but I let it slide.
"Yeah.. so why'd you call mom?"
"Just wanted to make sure you'd be up and ready for today." I pull my phone away and see I still have a couple of hours until my flight.
Oh, did I not mention? I'm flying to Los Angeles today.
"Yeah, I packed last night. Remember one big suitcase." I try to stifle a groan as I sit up. But my sickness and back have other plans for me. If one thing is for sure, I can't wait to never sleep on an air mattress again.
"Oh, that's right! I'm sorry I can't see you off."
I roll my eyes, knowing how busy my mom is and that no matter what she says, she wants to keep me here. She practically didn't let me go last night after dinner.
"I know, mom. It's alright."
"Whose picking you up from the airport?" Oh, that's right, I forgot to tell my mom. "James. Max's brother."
My mom accepts the answer and starts telling me about how her morning has been so far while I fumble my way into the bathroom and begin searching through every drawer, looking for cold & flu medicine.
"What's that racket?"
Apparently, I was not as quiet as I thought. "Where's the medicine? I searched everywhere." I ask through a cough.
"Bottom drawer. Behind the green bag." I search precisely where my mom said, and she was exactly right. How do mothers do that? "Be sure to take some ibuprofen two hours from now as well."
"Okay, mom." I throw back the pills before scooping some water from the tap into my hand, drinking like a sick animal.
"Be sure to eat something too." My mom adds, but all I want to do is curl up on the couch and die. "Mom, I'm no-"
"Don't you dare finish that sentence Y/N Y/L/N."
"Yes, ma'am." Great, now I'm in the kitchen.
"Oh, before I let you go, dear, what are your plans for your birthday?" Oh shit. My birthday is coming up. "No plans," I say, closing the fridge door with a shrug earning a sigh from my mom on the other end.
"Okay, let me know if you want to come back home for that."
I doubt it.
"Okay, mom. I'll keep you posted."
"Thank you, Y/N. Now I love you. Be sure to eat something and text me once you're on your way to the airport." I nod my head. "I will, mom. I love you too. Okay. Bye."
I end the call and throw my body onto the couch. I try to fight it, but before I know it, my eyes close, and I'm asleep.
Liz POV
They fixed the elevator.
The moving steel box's doors slide open as I reach my designated floor. Y/N's floor. With an envelope in one hand and her key in the other, I make my way to the door. I know she's not here. But a part of me still hopes I'll be in for a surprise when this door swings open.
And she's not here. In fact, the place is almost in the exact same position it was when I left it. Except it looks cleaner? Wait? Has someone been here? I take a couple of steps into the place and do what you're not supposed to do in every horror movie ever. "Hello?" I call into the quiet apartment.
I get no response.
Not fully trusting this situation, I close the door behind me and quickly search the place. It isn't until I find myself in Y/N's kitchen that I find a note stuck onto the fridge.
Hey Oslen,
Knowing you, you'll be back to Y/N's place more than once. But just in case I was wrong (I'm not), I went ahead and cleaned out her refrigerator and tidied up the place. You never know when she might come back, right? Plus, we can't have the place smelling like an old, run-down dumpster.
Anyways I'm sorry I haven't reached back out to you. But I'm happy to know that it looks like Y/N's case is finally on track to be over. Perks of having one of the hottest and best lawyers. ;)
Text me when you see this. And as far as I know. She's safe.
With care, Max
I fold up the piece of paper and place it into my back pocket but not before shooting a text to Max, letting her know that I saw her message and that I'm happy she's safe.
Reminding myself that I have my own piece of myself to share with Y/N. I take the envelope in my hand and walk it over to the coffee table. I hope she sees it. Maybe not tomorrow but some day.
After combing over the living room, I make my way into Y/N's bedroom. Knowing that there's not a murder in the building, I can actually look around to see the improvements Max made. Like for example, not more shirts on the floor. Instead, most of them are folded up on the bed or tossed onto hangers.
My hand immediately gravitated to one of the most recent pairs of shirts she wore. Yes, the pink-fonted Elizabeth Olsen picture collage shirt. I unfold the shirt and bring it up to my face. It still smells like her, but it's not as strong... I have to stop the pout from forming on my face. I've done it like crazy lately. I look back down at the shirt and start to get lost in a train of thought. Without another second, I find a small duffel bag and begin filling it with some shirts knowing that if I wear them out, I'll get seen. And if I get caught, they'll be posted everywhere. Everywhere- for one's woman's eyes to see.
_
"How did you get more bags?" My driver Mr. Bronson jokes as he takes them from me to place into the truck with my other luggage. "Technically, the one is a guitar case." This earns a sarcastic oooh from him.
I felt a little.. weird taking Y/N's old guitar, but it feels right at the same time. Plus, I keep remembering the texts Sam showed me from Y/N.
If you don't hear from me in the next couple of weeks, just know that I'm fine. Feel free to come to my place tomorrow. (Address) Take what you want.
Also, I don't want this guitar of hers to become lost or thrown out by mistake, and I've been itching to relearn to play.
"Ready?" Mr. Bronson pulls me from my thoughts. I quickly nod as the car slowly pulls away from the curb. I take one final look behind me to see Y/N's place become smaller.
Y/N POV
"Okay what about this." (Video attached)
That's more what I'm thinking.. but faster and don't be afraid to make it more Appalachian.
Y/N It's your song why don't you just record it.
Robbie, first off it's our song and I don't exactly have my guitar with me.. also the lyric is "I only want to be in the passing lane" Not "fastest lane."
Shit. You're right. This will be much easier when you're here.
Couple of hours. Thanks again. I know I've said it a million times but thank you
I should be the one thanking you. But fr stop it. We're helping each other. Also I'm just glad we're past the awkward stage. It's not everyday two exs become friends.(?)

"Earth to Y/N."
I lift my head from my phone, confused, which wasn't the brightest idea. My head is still killing me. The pills are helping but not as much as I want them to. "What?" I ask whoever is begging for my attention as I close my eyes and rub my forehead.
"Just wanted to know if you needed any help with your bags. You okay?" A male voice speaks.
I pull my eyes over to the voice. It's Nick. He's standing in front of the now-closed front door. How long has he been here? Shit what time is it?
I quickly panic and look at the time displayed on my phone.
Whew. I still have some hours till my flight takes off. But that means we should be leaving soon. Airports are always an annoying hassle.
"Y/N?" Nick's voice is now softer as he sits down on the couch next to me. "You okay, kid?" I take a deep breath and try and clear my painful throat.
"Yeah."
I guess I didn't do a good enough job at the throat-clearing. Nick's face remains unchanged, but his eyes are filled with worry and guilt. He knows I'm sick. And he gave me his cold.
"Did you take medicine?" I gently nod, not wanting to hurt myself more.
"Anything you need?"
"I'm fine." Me saying that and looking "fine" are two different things, but I hate being sick, so dwelling on it makes it worse. Plus, Nick and I are becoming closer. In fact, anytime my mom was at work, and if he had time, we'd hang out. It didn't involve much. Sometimes it was just watching tv or grabbing lunch, but it formed this weird bond between us. Maybe I remind him of his late son, or perhaps he is just a good man. Or, who knows, maybe he's showing me he can be... something more. I don't know. What I do know is that I don't want him to be worrying about me right now. I got enough going on.
Nick looks at me uncertain but doesn't push it. "Are you all packed?"
"Yeah, I did it after dinner." Nick nods his head as he gets up to go to the kitchen. "Tea?" He asks without turning his back.
"Yes, please."
Liz POV
Paparazzi present as always.
They're lining up at the entrance to the airport, just alive and waiting. I guess word got around. I was showing up. I mean, it makes sense the paps would want a good photo of me. I've barely left my place the last couple of weeks so getting a picture of me "out of my cave" makes people go crazy.
"Mr. Bronson?" I ask while keeping my attention on the picture takers outside. "Could you help me with my bags?"
"Of course." I turn to see him already looking at me with a smile. "Hat and sunglasses on." He reminds me. "Ready?" I nod once I'm "disguised."
"Ready."
"Let's go." Mr. Bronson steps out of the car and opens the truck grabbing all my bags placing them on the floor before closing up the trunk. He comes around to my side of the vehicle and sets something next to the door. Before I can think about what it is, he opens the door reminding me to "keep your head down." I nod to him as he places the guitar case in my hand. "Might help." He adds.
It surprisingly works a little. As we walked by the paparazzi, far fewer pictures than usual were taken of me. The ones that knew who I was knew. The others, I think, were taking a gamble and thought I was some indie singer or something. Regardless. I'm here inside the busy airport, from one anxiety-filled thing to another.
Mr. Bronson left shortly once we made it inside. I thanked him profusely, which he, of course, shrugged off. All he told me was to "go get her." I guess he thinks I'm chasing after Y/N.
Speaking of...
I'm now sitting down, opening our very one-sided text conversation. I scroll back up to the last couple of texts she sent me. They make me smile. This was back before the ignored calls. Back before I screwed it up. Back before, I lost the one real thing I've ever known. I remember it.
"Excuse me?"
I quickly close and fumble to put my phone away at a quiet voice speaking to me. I look up through my sunglasses to see a girl. She must be 14 or so. How'd she get into this airport lounge? Doesn't she need to have a credit card and be a member or something? Oh God, is she lost?
I can feel my nerves begin to overtake me. Deep breaths, Lizzie.
"Excuse me?" The girl speaks to me again. Shit, I should probably say something.
"Hello." I give a smile as the girl's face lights up from me just speaking. "Oh my God, It's really you! I wasn't 100% sure. I was going to be mortified if it was someone else." I giggle, calming down a bit at the girl's tone and evident nervousness.
"What's your name?" The girl smiles again before it looks like she's trying to remember her own name. Oh gosh, seeing fans get like this makes me feel a little bad. I don't want them to get too stressed or nervous just from meeting another human being.
"Geneva."
I say the name back to myself internally before gesturing to the seat next to me since Geneva was just hunched over in front of me. "Are you sure?" She looks at me with such worry, but I motion again. "Please. It's okay." Geneva nods before taking the seat next to me. She looks like she wants to say a million things, but at the same time, she's too star-struck to do anything. I got time to kill, and I haven't really been talking to many people as of late, so I'll start.
"Geneva?" The girl turns to me- jaw dropped. "You said my name." I nod. "I did. Can I ask you a question?"
"Anything." She replies quicker than I would've hoped for.
"How'd you know it was me? And where did you see me from?"
Geneva points to her head. Leaving me a little confused. "Your cap." I lift my hand up to touch it. My LA Dodgers Cap? "It's like your calling card. You rep it more than any other celebrity. It's basically your own merch." She tells me with a smile. Huh, I mean, I guess I did buy Y/N her own cap for a reason.
I do wear it a lot, don't I?
"I literally bought one because of you. Oh, and I saw you from... over... there!" I follow where Geneva's finger is pointing. In the distance is an older man watching, waving at our interaction. So that's how she got in here. "That's my dad. I tried explaining who you were and why I was freaking out, but he didn't get it. I hope I'm not bothering you." Geneva quickly adds that last sentence in.
"Not at all. I was getting lost in my own world, so I'm happy you stepped over here." I tell her honestly. "Okay, good." Geneva appears to take a deep breath and relax a little after hearing that. I know that feeling all too well.
"So, where are you going?" I turn my body slightly towards Geneva, so she knows she has my attention.
"My dad and I are going to Oregon for a week."
"That should be fun." I instantly encourage the idea seeing that Geneva looks nervous. "I hope so. I don't like flying."
"That's okay." I go to say something else, but I see Geneva's wandering eyes look over my carry-on purse. "Where are you going?"
"Home." I point to my cap with a slight smile. Geneva slowly nods her head. "Filming?" I shake my head. "Not for a while."
"I loved WandaVision. I think it made Wanda my favorite." She mumbles that last part, but I heard her. "Oh?! Well, thank you, Geneva, but who was your favorite?"
"Bucky and Black Widow," Geneva replies, almost scared that she had another favorite before me. She knows I'm not the Scarlet Witch, right? I subtly laugh at her responses. "Those are cool characters. One is way cooler than the other."
"And hotter!" Geneva replies casually before realizing I'm not one of her teenage friends. She looks at me wide-eyed. "I-uh-I didn't- I'm sorry- don't tell Sca-" "It's okay. Your secrets are safe with me." Geneva still looks a little panicked, and it reminds me of the talks Y/N and I would have about her love of Black Widow.
I will say Geneva and Y/N are right. She is hot.
"Can I say something?" Geneva breaks the awkward yet comfortable silence that is building up in this loud airport. I gesture for her to keep going.
"I'm really sorry for how it happened, but knowing that one of my favorite superheroes or anti-hero or whatever you wanna call Wanda now was being played by someone who is a lot more like me than I thought was important."
This is a conversation that Marla and Rhonda told me that needed to happen. I have yet to publicly confirm that, yes, I am a part of a certain community now. All that's been said is that Robbie and I were no longer together and that I was seeing someone named Y/N Y/L/N—so hearing from a girl who can't even drive yet that I mean this much to her. It makes my heart warm up and break at the same time. I feel ecstatic that I can now be someone for people to look up to, but at the same time, I haven't done enough.
This needs to change.
I look over to Geneva.
"As I said, I'm sorry for how it happened, but you and your girlfriend look really cute together."
Girlfriend. I quickly use my acting skills and cover up and frown or look that suggests otherwise.
"Thank you very much, Geneva! Yes, we are cute, aren't we." I chuckle at the same time she does. "And I still look at Wanda as a hero, so you can too." I nudge Geneva.
Geneva looks down as her phone lights up. I didn't even realize she had it in her hands. "Oh, looks like we're about to board." Geneva looks up at me. "If it's not too much trouble, could I get a picture?" This child is so kind.
"Of course." I quickly take off my sunglasses as Geneva has the camera ready. I lean in close to Geneva, but not enough, so we're touching. "I won't take too many."
"I think a couple will be fine." I calmly but sternly tell her.
"Okay. One.. two.. three.. GAY!" My smile quickly morphs into a laugh that I cover worth my hand. I was not expecting the girl to say this. While laughing, another picture gets taken. "I can't believe I made Elizabeth Olsen laugh!" Geneva says a bit too loud for my liking reminding myself where we are.
It looks like we're done with the photos, so I quickly take the time to cover my face back up. "Thank you so much. Omg, this is the greatest thing I've ever taken."Geneva shows me, and it's a typical one, and then Geneva smiling as I'm dying of laughter. "I'm glad to be a part of it." In the distance, I see Geneva's dad making his way over here. I guess they're running a little late now.
"Thank you again! This means so much to me." I smile. "Me too." Geneva starts to walk away, but I stop her. "Geneva!" She quickly turns back. "Yes?!"
How do I say this?
"Do you mind waiting until tomorrow to post that picture? If you do it now.. the paparazzi will be worse in Los Angeles." Geneva thinks about my words. "Sure. I don't want it to be worse for you." I graciously nod. "Thank you very much."
"Of course, Lizzie. Happy Pride Month." Geneva waves at me before walking to her now crossed arm dad.
It is the start of pride month.
I quickly pull out my phone, exiting my text conversation with Y/N and opening the one with Marla and Rhonda.
"An interview needs to be made today. People need to know who I am."
Y/N POV
The ride to the airport was uneventful. Aside from the occasional small talk and "I'm sorry for getting you sick" from Nick, nothing happened.
Now we're inching the car closer to the departure zone.
"Hey, kid?" When he first started calling me that, I thought it would go away because of how annoying it was, but it didn't, and I've grown to like it.
"Hmm?" I turn to face Nick as his eyes are watching the cars in front of us.
"Is the reason you left New York waiting for you in LA?"
"No," I say without another thought to the question or to the pain in my throat.
"Do you want them to be?"
I purse my lips and think. I don't know.. I've been avoiding Elizabeth for weeks but saying that I don't want to see her at all would be a complete lie because I miss her. I truly do. For the past couple of nights, I've been having dreams and nightmares about her. Maybe that's what's making my move to LA easier.
"I don't know," I whisper my answer out as Nick nods his head and drops the subject.
"You know, getting to know you these past couple of weeks has been wonderful. I'm happy to know Laurie has such an amazing daughter." The car has now reached my drop-off area. I turn to the older gentleman next to me.
"It's been a pleasure getting to know you too, Nickolas." Nick smiles but rolls his eyes at the awkward way I say his name causing me to laugh, which I regret doing as my warm throat starts fighting me.
"Need help with your bag?" I shake my head no, but Nick is already out of the car, opening the trunk for me. Once I'm about, he's already wheeling my suitcase to me. "Text your mother when you land. She'll be worried sick otherwise."
"I will."
Without thinking, I wrap my arms around Nick and hug him. I feel Nick hesitate before doing the same. It didn't last long, but it was nice. "Thanks again for everything." "Sorry for getting you sick, kid." Now I roll my eyes. "It's alright. I'll see you, Nick." I turn around and start walking to the airport doors.
"Wait!" I turn around to see the car window rolled down with Nick leaning over the passenger seat. "Don't forget to check your bag! You're flying to LA; who knows what someone might do if it's left in the overhead bin." I shake my head at him like he's crazy until I remembered the conversation over dinner last night.
"Literally pee all over my luggage. Someone left their child's toilet up in the top, and during take-off, it flew to the back, smacking everyone's precious cargo." (A/N this story happened on a podcast I used to listen to)
My face morphs in disgust. I shoot Nick a thumbs up as he laughs at my face. "So long, kid!" And with that, I turn back around and head straight towards my airline's desk. Ready to check this bag.
_
Okay, so that took longer than I thought it would. Of course, it's the beginning of summer, and this place is packed. What was I thinking? Now I'm sprinting, yes, sprinting to my gate! Mind you; I'm still feeling terrible!
It's like a scene out of a movie. I make it to my gate just as the last couple of people are shuffling on. The ticket on my phone goes through, and now I can finally breathe! I follow the people onto the plane, double-checking that I have everything. Phone? Obviously. AirPods? Duh. Cards and ID? Front pocket because what if my bag gets lost because I listened to Nick? Okay, time to find my seat and get rid of this headache.
I picked the worst day to fly.
_
Does anyone watch the stewardess do the safety instructions in case something happens and you need to step up, or is this just my anxiety making me watch them?
Anyways I feel relieved once they finish up. The person next to me couldn't give a shit. They were on their phone the whole time, and let me tell you, they were getting screamed at by someone through text.
Which weirdly reminds me.
I open my phone. I never finished my conversation with Robbie.
wasn't ignoring you just got on the plane. I'll text you when I land.
After a couple of minutes, Robbie responds.
No sweat I started taking a crack at that other song All Eyes On Me. Are you sure this is suited for me?
Moody indie? Uh yeah dude.
🙄 Saving it for when you get here. have a safe flight.
👍🏼
I exit that conversation, and I'm surprised to see a text from Max I don't remember getting.
"Elizabeth stopped by your place again. I think it might be for the last time. She's leaving ny."
Oh wow. Trying to copy me, Olsen?
I'm trying to formulate a sentence to type back, but I get interrupted when the mean stewardess tells me to put all electronic devices on airplane mode.
I'll just text Maxine back later. As of right now, though, I think it's time to pull out my AirPods, put on a relaxing playlist and tune out that crying baby five rows ahead of me.
Liz POV
Even in first class, I'm nervous. I don't know what it is today, but my nerves are doubled. Ever since we touched down in my home state, I've had this weird feeling.
Was I wrong to leave? Is it wrong to come back home? I should've apologized and seen my sister before leaving. No, I should've fucking chased after Y/N when I had the chance. Oh, God. Should I change my sunglasses and hat?
"Miss Olsen?" I dramatically lift my eyes up from the spot where my engagement ring used to be to see the eyes of the kind stewardess saving me from myself. "If you'd like to follow me." I nod before getting up and following her like a lost puppy. Except lost puppies don't get the stink eye from people, you never met.
Once we make it to the gate, the stewardess leads me to a man waiting with my bags. Well, all except one thing. Y/N's guitar case. Also, who is this man? Why is he here? I can carry my own bags.
"Thank you," I say to the stewards, who gives me a tight-lipped smile before turning back onto the plane. I walk up to the man and thank him for gathering all my belongings, but I can take it from here. He obliges as I double-check that I do indeed have everything except the guitar. I do! So with my purse securely on my shoulder and the bags and cases in my hands, I make my way to baggage claim.
Y/N POV
Two naps in one day.
I feel better after the second one. Or at least I thought I did. My eyes aren't tired. My head isn't killing me. But my throat. My throat got worse. Yes, it doesn't pain me as much to speak, but it's extra scratchy, and anytime I do try and speak, it's not my voice. I sound like a different person. Oh goodness, I need cough drops and water quick.
A text to James, Robbie, Max, and my mom later, and I'm the last one off. I've never been that last one off a plane, so I guess I can cross that off my bucket list. Why is it called that? Anyways with no bags carried on with me, it's now time to try to find my airline's baggage claim.
Oh yeah, also, I've never been to LAX before, so this is a new terrifying experience.
I hate that I'm doing this by myself.
_
I shouldn't have listened to Nick. I swear I've watched hundreds of people come by and be gone while I'm still here. I literally watched a guy walk around the corner, come by, scoop up his bag and walk straight into a car waiting for him. What the fuck?
Also, some people have zero sense of fashion. I know I don't, but I was learning a thing or two from the Olsens. Plus, I'm gay, so it's different.
Anygays, after watching the black suitcase with red lining pass by for the 7,495 time, I'm about to give up when brand new bags start coming down.
I watch as the crowd around me starts to grow. I had to do a double take when I thought I saw a woman in an LA Dodgers cap hanging around, but I didn't see her anymore, and I have to remember I'm actually in California now, so that's probably normal.

Finally, I saw it! My large suitcase was making its way to me. Without much of a struggle, I'm able to pull off the belt and make sure that, yes, it's mine. I'm about to finally walk away when something catches my eye.
I watch as it slides its way down before slowly making it was past me. It can't be. I look over the stickers on the case. Surely someone else has my exact same ones.
Except no one has my Davey-made sticker for my high school track team. Only one was made.
And there it is.
I watch as the case passes the people to my right. "Hey." I croak out of my throat as I watch a hand go and grab the case. Shit. They didn't hear me. When did so many people get here?
"Excuse me." "Get out of my way." "Sorry."
These are all the things I'm spitting out as the power starts coming back into my voice as I'm rushing to whoever thinks they can't steal my guitar case.
How the fuck do they have it?
"Hey, stop," I call out once I'm behind the person. "You with the case!" Fucking unbelievable! They're ignoring me.
"Hey!" I clear my throat once more and get right up behind the person before grabbing the bottom of my case from them pulling them back towards me.
"Who the fuck do you think you are!"
Liz POV
It took long enough, but it's finally here in my hands. I'm surprised I haven't been recognized with how long I was just standing there waiting.
I thought I saw someone who looked a lot like Y/N peer their way toward me, but I lost them in the ever-growing crowd.
Anyways. It's finally here in my hand. I hear some commotion behind me, but I'm too tired to see what that's about. I just want to "Hey!" get to Aubrey's before bringing this guitar to Robb-
"Who the fuck do you think you are!"
I feel the guitar case being pulled from behind as my hand gets yanked back, turning me around.
"Hey!" I yell before our eyes meet.

Y/N POV
On the drive to my mom's, I filled her in on everything that's happened. It wasn't easy, and I didn't want to, but we're in the process of keeping our relationship in a good place, so being honest with her is what I got to do.
She bit her tongue as much as possible, but she let one "bitch" slip through. It honestly made me chuckle. However, by the time we pulled into her gated apartment complex, she let me know how sorry she was for me and how she wished Lizzie would've been better.
Me too.
"Do you love her?" My mom asked as we passed the gates.
"I do."
"I'm just going to say this one thing." Oh boy. "Talk to her and if you still love her after that then it's meant to be."
I decided to say nothing as my mom pulls into a parking spot, I look around and remember I haven't been here. She moved into this apartment complex last year after.. everything.
"Looks.. cute!" I say as my mom opens the trunk so that I can get my belongings. "Yeah, it's great. Sometimes it gets too rowdy, but what can you do." My mom says as she hands me my bags, closing the trunk before we head toward her door.
My mom is on the ground/first floor of apartment building number two. Its exterior color is maroon with dark browns. As we walk into the exterior hallway towards her door, my mom turns to me since she sees me in thought.
"You okay, dear?" I look down at my mom and put on a smile. "Just taking it in." My mother nods and leads me to her door.
216.
Elizabeth Chase Olsen's birthday and my mom's apartment number.
What the fuck.
I look down at her doormat and laugh on the inside. Partly because of how fucked up the universe is right now and because of the stupid saying on the dumb doormat.
"Wipe your paws."
She doesn't even own a pet. What is she on about?
Once my mom finally unlocks her door, she gestured for me to enter, but we are stopped when her neighbor's door opens, and out walks a tall older gentleman. He's got salt and pepper hair, a clean, shaved face, and appears to be in good health.
"Laurie! I thought I heard you!" The older man steps out from his door frame and enters the hallway. "Shouldn't you be at work?" I look over to my mom, whose body has become relaxed as she smiles at the man.
"Nick! Hello yes! I did have to work, but I called off when my daughter here made a surprise visit home!" The man briefly brings his attention to me before glancing at my mother. "Daughter?" My mom places an arm around me. "Yes! Nick, this is my daughter Y/N!" Nick's face lights up as he steps forward and places a hand out. "So lovely to meet you." I shake the man's hand. "Nice to meet you, Nick." Nick throws his arms up. "Just like I told your mother, it doesn't matter what you call me. Nick, Nicholas, or Nikolai, I'll be fine with."
A genuine smile appears on my face as I'm reminded of the first time I met Davey.
"I'll be sure to keep that in mind." Nick nods with a smile before he notices my bags. "Do you two need any help with the rest?" My mother shakes her head. "We got it all but thank you."
"Not a problem. I'll leave you two to it. It was a pleasure to meet you, Y/N." With a smile and a thoughtful look at my mom, Nick walks back to his door, but before going in, he gives a cheerful wave before closing the door behind him.
I look at my mom, who still has her eyes on Nick's door before she blinks and focuses on her own open door. "Let's get you inside," she says, utterly oblivious to the fact that I was watching her and already wanting to be inside.
With the door close, my mom locks it as I take in her apartment. As soon as you walk in, to your right is my mom's black leather couch lining the wall until it hits the next wall. On that wall is the porch door. However, claiming that the little area is a porch is a bit of a stretch. Anyway, in front of the couch is her black wooden coffee table and entertainment center.
To the left of the door is her dining room table and kitchen. Nothing too remarkable aside from the fact that she seems to have newer appliances that stand out from the rest of the kitchen.
Straight from the door is a short hallway with a hidden laundry room and a guest bathroom. The first bedroom door you encounter is the main bedroom. While you have to turn down the hall, you reach the guest. The main bedroom closet also connects to the bathroom, so score one for mom.
"What do you think?" My mom asks me, as my mind has already looked over everything.
"I think it looks.." I take one more quick look around, but I stop as my eyes fall onto a picture she has on a table near the kitchen. It's a picture of when my mom, Davey, and I when we went to see Taylor Swift perform at Bridgestone Arena. I remember my mom talking about how the opening act was clearly talented but didn't have the looks.
She was talking about Ed Sheeran.
"..it looks like it suits you, mom," I say with a smile as I turn my head away from the picture.
"Well, did you let all your friends know you're home and safe?"
"Yep. Already did that." My mom looks over at me and smiles. "Great. I'll show you the guest room." My mom leads me down the hall and into the guest room. It's pretty barebones since my mom is the only one that lives here, so there's only like one dresser and an end table next to an air mattress. My mother watches as I look around the room. She keeps doing this, and I know it's because, like everyone else, she's worried about me.
I set my bag and suitcase down next to the air mattress and look at my mom. "Thanks, mom, for everything. I'm sorry to do this." My mom raises her hand and brings me into a hug. "My pumpkins home. Everything's okay." We exit the hug as my stomach makes an unbearable noise. I guess I forgot that I hadn't eaten since that one wimpy bagel earlier.
"What do you say we go out for a late lunch?"
"Okay." I simply say because my mind can only think about food right now.
_
We decided to head to a local Italian restaurant. It opened up in 1985 and it became a stable in this community. It's got those red plastic cups that somehow makes soda taste better and red picnic table covers, so you know this place is good.
Once we get seated, my mother excuses herself to the ladies' room and tells me that if someone comes by to take our order, she'd like a sweet tea and water with lemon. I rolled my eyes at how southern she can be sometimes.
It doesn't take long for me to find what I want to eat, so it's now a waiting game.
"Hey. Sorry I wasn't aware someone was seated in my section. What can I get for you?" A tall, curly brunette woman finally comes to the table. As she talks, she is rummaging around her pockets, looking for a pen. Her voice is oddly familiar.
Unsure of if I should wait or not, I decide to pull the trigger and order the drinks.
"Just two waters and a sweet tea with some lemons on the side. Please."
With a pen in hand, the waitress finally lifts her head, and I instantly know who this is.
Her name is Becca, and she was my first kiss after I figured out my sexuality in high school. Becca was more popular than I was, but she was nice. I was her first kiss with a girl, and the last I heard, she was dating a guy from around here. Yeah, ew, but she seems happy.
Her eyes glimmer with maybe a twang of remembrance for me, but that's quickly dismissed when she nods at me and tells me she'll be right back with my drinks.
Only a few more moments of silence pass before my mom finally rejoins me, with Becca following soon afterwards. Becca greets my mom for the first before she looks over at me and winks. Winks? What the fuck does that mean?
"Dear." My mom's voice pulls me out. "Hmm?" Becca quietly laughs at my confusion while my mom glances at me. "I said, are you okay with mozzarella sticks as an appetizer?"
"Yeah, sure," I say before taking a sip of water to save myself. Plus, the mozzarella sticks sound terrific. Yeah, I've had greasy food as of late, but I tried to cut back and eat healthier when I was with Li- Elizabeth. I know she wouldn't have judged me or anything, but I just wanted to be my best for her. But that seems so stupid now. The second the world finds out about us, she bails. Whatever. I'm so going to enjoy these fucking grease sticks.
Becca asks if we're ready to order, and my mom goes ahead with her order. When it's my turn, Becca looks at me with such focus. After ordering my Blacken Chicken Alfredo, Becca takes our menus and heads off.
"Do you know that girl?"
"We went to high school together," I say as casually as possible.
Thankfully my mom doesn't question every little thing about Becca as she normally would. I think after Elizabeth, my mom is taking a step back and giving me space which I greatly appreciate.
"So.." I start an incomplete thought. Why is it so hard talking to your parents? Is it just me? Like, I love the woman that birthed me so much but God, trying to have a normal conversation with her feels like pulling teeth. Which if you like that, you're sick.
"Anything new at work?" God, what a boring question. My mom is the head catering manager for the business offices of all the major hospitals around the Nashville area. She's been in the food industry for more than half her life.
My mom nods her head and begins to tell me about something and something else. I feel bad for not listening, but I can't. I'm sorry.
But my mind isn't turned off for too long as Becca finally comes around with the mozzarella sticks. "Do you two need anything else in the meantime?" Becca looks to my mom and me. I shake my head no as my mother does the same. Becca nods at us. "Your entrees should be out shortly." We thank her as she leaves.
"She's cute." Oh no. Mom, please stop while you're ahead. My mom looks to me for a response, but I shove a grease stick into my mouth before I manage to say anything embarrassing. So I offer a shrug as the scolding hot cheese burns the inside of my mouth.
_
We manage to make small talk between us before our entrees get placed onto our table.
God, I love Italian food.
Becca offers us extra cheese, which I stupidly accept. "Great," Becca says with a smile as she moves closer to my side of the table. "Tell me when Y/N." She says with a playful tease in her voice. Fuck she remembers me. I look up at her face to see it resting with a smirk. Real Scarlett move there. Her eyes move to meet mine.
In an instant, I'm transported back to high school, and I'm sitting across from her pulling her body into a kiss.
With a blink of my eyes, I'm back to looking at her with an eyebrow raised.
"When." I manage to say without looking at my plate.
"Enjoy," Becca says, her eyes never leaving my body.
I don't dare to watch Becca's body as it walks away from me; instead, I bring my eyes to my plate of pasta. I take a glance at my mom, who is on her phone, too busy to realize what just transpired.
_
As my stomach starts settling from the food, my mom gets up again to use the restroom. She claims she pees so much because of her new medication. If you ask me, she's just getting older. But I digress.
I pull my phone out and decide to catch Max up on what's been happening with my mom. She's happy for her and claims I must set my mom up with Nick. I kindly tell her to fuck off and start to ask her about Sam and Ivy when a particular waitress walks up to my table.
"So here's the bill. Is there anything else I can get for you?"
I shake my head no and thank Becca for being so great today. Becca smiles kindly and goes to step away but stops herself.
"Hey, can I ask you something?" I set my phone down on the table to give her my full attention. "Sure."
"Do you remember me from high school?" I tilt my head a little in confusion because, yeah, I thought that was obvious. "Because earlier I said your name, and you didn't react that much so I wasn't sure if-"
"I remember." I smile as I cut her off. I watch relief wash over Becca as she becomes more relaxed.
"Okay, good. So what are you doing back here? Last I heard, you went to Syracuse, right?" I nod at her correct question. "Yep. I'm back home. But just visiting." I say as if that's fact.
"Well, how nice. Your mom is very sweet. We don't see her much around her, but she and Nick are very kind."
Nick? My mom comes here with Nick?
"Oh." I mean to say more, but nothing comes out.
Becca quickly looks over to the restroom area before bending down next to me. "Is it true?"
I have a feeling I know what she's asking. "Is what true?" I say back in a ruder tone than I meant.
Becca's eyes fill with regret as she shoots back up to a standing position. "Sorry, I shouldn't have-" "No, Becca, I'm sorry-" "No, it's fine. I'll be back to collect your choice of payment." Becca walks away with guilt before I could say anything and apologize for my tone.
And, of course, now my mom chooses to exit the bathroom and return to our table. My mom sits down across from me and is none the wiser. "Oh, I see someone doesn't feel like paying." My mom teases me, seeing that I didn't bother looking at the bill. I put on a fake smile as she grabs her purse and searches for her wallet.
By the time she places the card down, Becca is ready to pick it up. "I'll take just one moment." Becca leaves without looking at me. God, I can't take another person avoiding me, thinking it's for their good. Or my good. Or whoever's! Agh!!
"Excuse me." I get up, leaving my mother alone at the table as I follow Becca back to her little waitress's kitchen display area. You know that little screen they use in the corners of restaurants?
"Becca." She looks behind her, a little shocked to see me with her. "Y/N! What are you doing?" "I'm sorry my tone was all off. Yes, it's true. Whatever you've heard about me is probably true. I just don't want to talk about it. Why do you think I'm here." Becca looks at me as I word vomit, and she doesn't smile or look surprised. Instead, she looks at me with pity. Is that worse?
"I shouldn't have probed. I'm sorry, Y/N." She pulls me into a quick hug before we're both awkwardly standing around.
"I'm going to slide your mom's card now.." She points to the operating system earning a laugh from me, which in turn causes her to smile. I nod and head back to the table.
My mom doesn't make a peep or look at me in any way to indicate she knew what just happened. Instead, I see a smile on her from the corner of my eye.
Seconds later, Becca returns with the bill and two copies of the receipt. "Thank you both so much for coming in here today. I'm glad you enjoyed it." My mother positively responded as she began leaving a nice tip for Becca.
Becca makes sure to smile at my mom before turning her gaze to me. In her hand, I see her set a napkin down at the edge of the table before she waves at me and turns, walking away.
I snag the napkin and open it up, revealing Becca's phone number and a little note.
In case you ever want to talk about anything else besides New York. - B.
I bring my head and try to search for her, but I don't see her.
"Ready?" My mom brings me back down to Earth. I nod and thank her once again for lunch.
_
My mom and I enter her apartment without an interruption from Nick. Shame honestly. I was kind of hoping I'd get the chance to see him and my mom interact. Like, are they friends? Or?
"So dear, what would you like to do now?" My mom has always been a go go go kinda of lady. She needs a plan and to always be doing something. You can see why I'm more go-with-the-flow. Remember how she reacted when she caught me just watching Godzilla?
I bring my phone out of my pocket and see that it's only the early afternoon. I guess I was hoping it was later, or maybe I feel like it is because my eyes are becoming tired. Quickly.
"I think I'm going to nap if that's alright?" I sheepishly ask my mom. Under normal circumstances, she would probably tell me no and force me to go out and do something with her, but today she nodded and said, "It'll give me time to fill out some orders. Have a good nap, dear." With a smile on my tired face, I made my way to the guest room. My room and plopped myself down on the air mattress. Sleep is rapidly approaching.

Liz POV
It's been hours, and I have yet to move from Y/N's dining room table.
I keep rereading every single word on the pages in front of me. I keep flipping past Rocket Man, hoping for the Goodbye message to be there. Hell, a part of me is hoping she'll come through the door and- and... I don't know.. apologize? Kiss me? Let me tell her how sorry I am.
Instead, I'm sat here waiting. My body is becoming sore from the position I'm in, but I deserve this. I planned on sitting here for longer afraid that if I move, what's already real would actually be real. However, a knock at the door makes me move. But when I open the door, it's someone new to me.
Brunette hair. Bangs. About my height. Blue eyes that are covered by her glasses. She smiles at me, almost shocked. "You-you're Elizabeth Olsen-n." Great, someone found Y/N's address. The anger in me building back up from the last 24 hours plus. "And who the hell are you?" I snap at the younger woman. She goes to open her mouth, but nothing comes out. "You better be gone in the next two seconds before I call the cops," I say as I go to slam the door, but the brunette's arm stops me.
"I'm Sam!" She gets out in a panic.
"Sam?" Who the fuck is Sam? "Okay?" I eye her up and down but lightening my tone.
"I work- worked with Y/N. Is she here?" My anger subsides, and my body becomes lighter at the sound of Y/N's name. I eye Sam again before remembering Max talking about Sam one time. Yes, Sam! Sam went to the club with Y/N and Mary-Kate that one night! Okay!
"Sam," I say to the brunette, who shakes her head a little confused. "I'm sorry I didn't know what you looked like. I also wasn't expecting anyone here." I'm embarrassed at my previous outburst and now here I am rambling. Get it together, Lizzie.
"So, is Y/N not here?" Sam's face forms an upside-down smile. I shake my head no, making my own frown. "Do you want to come in?" I don't know why I asked Sam that, but it's too late now.
"Uh-h, okay." I open the door wider, allowing Sam to enter Y/N's place.
As Sam walked in, I watched her look around the small place. Her eyes glanced over the open journal, but they quickly darted away, which I was thankful for.
"It's cute," Sam said in just above a whisper. I thought she had been here before. Shit. Does she actually know Y/N? Is this the right Sam, or did I just let a stranger into her home with me?
Panic begins to fill my body as Sam turns towards me.
"It's nice to finally meet you." Sam extends her hand out, which I stupidly shake. "I'm trying to keep all my fangirling on the inside, but Oh My God! I can't believe it's you." Sam is practically bouncing with energy now, and I feel safer knowing she might be who she says she is. Am I overreacting?
I give her a small smile as our hands leave each other. Okay, time to grill her.
"So.." I start as I move to the dining room, closing the journal. Sam watches me with wide eyes. "When was the last time you saw Y/N?"
Sam answers me quicker than I thought she would. "Sometime last week."
Hmm. Vague.
"How long have you worked with- sorry, how long did you work with her?" My heart pulls out the use of the past tense. Sam's smile flattens at the sound of it as well. "We didn't work together long, but we did have a lot of shifts together. She was the first person to get to know me on my first day. We became fast friends." Sam says with a brand new smile on her face. I suddenly feel a little guilty, thinking that Sam might not be who they say they are.
"When was the last time you talked to her?"
"Umm." Sam hesitates as she stands in the middle of the apartment awkwardly. She sighs before finally meeting my eyes. She walks towards me, pulling her phone out of her pocket.
When she places the phone down in front of me, I see her and Y/N text back to one another.

Y/N/N 🤡 Yesterday 9:17 PM
Omg Y/N thank goodness you're okay. Please stop apologizing It's okay. I'll be sure to swing by. Take what I want? What does that mean?
Y/N
Y/N?
"I haven't heard from her since." Sam's careful voice breaks my eyes from the screen. "I was hoping she'd be here. Alive." Sam tried to slip that last word under the radar, but I heard it.
"Thank you for showing me," I say with a tear-filled smile.
"So you haven't seen here either, right?" Sam walks closer to me before sitting down at the dining room table as well. I shake my head no.
"Is it over?" I want to ask Sam what she means by that, but we both know. I don't want it to be. That's what I want to say.
"Yes." Is what I say instead.
Sam looks at me with pity. Pity I don't deserve. It's clear she doesn't know the whole story, and I don't plan on telling her. The least people that know, the better. Right?
Sam moves her gaze around the apartment again as silence fills the room. While my mind is spiraling over the words I've just read, I look at Sam and see her lost in her head. Her face morphs from sad to angry, and before I can move, silent tears start flowing from her.
"Sam.." I say softly before inching myself closer to the girl I just met. "Sam," I speak louder as I lay my hand on hers. Sam jumps back from the contact as she searches for the source of the touch. She quickly looks at me and then at our hands. I watch as her eyes go wide, and in an instant, she stands up, wiping at her face. Cheeks red with embarrassment.
"Oh my God, I'm so sorry. Please forget you saw any of that." Sam begins spilling apologies after apologies. "Fuck." She whispers out.
I'm not going to lie. A small part of me wants to giggle at how embarrassed Sam became, but maybe that's my fucked up, exhausted body and emotions at work.
"Hey, it's okay. You're okay, Sam." I say as I stand up, following the girl pacing in Y/N's living room. Sam turns to me, her face looking a little less red. Her eyes work their way to my face. "Elizabeth.."
The full name, huh?
"You don't think Y/N would.." Sam trails off, leaving me confused. "Y/N would what?" Sam breathes in and out before speaking up. "You don't think Y/N would not be here with us anymore?"
That thought hadn't crossed my mind once.
Maybe it's because, in my heart, I wanted to see her one more time. Maybe it's because I received a journal proving otherwise. Maybe I don't know... maybe just because it genuinely never crossed my mind.. So why did it happen for Sam?
"No. No. Not at all. She would never do that." I make sure Sam looks at me as I say this. Apart of me wants to show Sam the journal, but I don't. Instead, I let my words carry me above actions. "Sam, she would never leave us like that." Sam opens her mouth but closes it.
"Sam." I put a hand on her arm and push the both of us towards the couch. "Why would you think that?" I ask out of genuine curiosity and also out of anger. Why does she think that? Was there something more going on with Y/N than I realized? What if she did-
"I didn't mean to upset you." Once again, I look at the blue-eyed girl with confusion. "I'm not upset, Sam. I just.. I just never thought of that." Sam glances at me. "Trust me, Sam. I don't think Y/N would ever do such a thing. So once again, Sam. Why would you think that?"
"Y/N reminds me a lot of someone who.." Sam trails off again.
"What's was their name?" I carefully ask, hoping I'm making the right choice by doing so. Sam's body language doesn't change much, so maybe I am.
"Emily."
I smile at the sound of that name.
"Picture Y/N but with striking black hair and acute facial features. And slightly shorter." Sam says with a smile picturing what she's telling me. "Oh, and a midwestern accent." She offers a short laugh at that last part. "We grew up in a smaller town than most. And it's not like it was overly conservative or anything. It just still had its people set in their ways." I don't try and stop Sam, but I think she's talking without realizing it. "Her parents were those kinds of people." Sam wipes her hands on her jeans as she keeps going. "Her parents didn't accept her for who she is- was. That made life harder for her. High school also doesn't help at that age." I watch as Sam's mouth opens and closes. She keeps gathering her thoughts before abandoning them.
"I tried.. I tried to.. she took too many.."
Sam's now at a point where her lips are quivering, spitting out words through her closing throat. She's not crying, but God, I see her fighting those tears. Not knowing what to do for her, I pull her into my side. Letting us rest in silence until she's ready.
_
It wasn't long, but it was a little weird when Sam tried to leave my grasp.
She profusely apologized for "crying" in front of me again and trauma dumping onto me. I told her it was okay and that I didn't mind hearing her share.
What I didn't tell Sam was that the whole time she was in my arm, all I did was think of Y/N and what would happen to her now that she was gone. Not gone, but you know.
After a couple of minutes, Sam made the decision that it was time for her to go. I made sure to give her a friendly hug before asking her for her phone. She seemed a little nervous but acted appropriately when I told her she now had my number.
It's mainly so that if Y/N contacts Sam, I'll know, but it doesn't hurt that I told Sam that she could reach out to me when she needs to.
I also threatened Sam with a good ole Wanda head tilt and told her that if she ever sold this number or anything, she'd have to deal with me before the cops.
The look on her face was priceless.
With a goodbye to Sam and a locked door, I am now alone again in Y/N's place, knowing she won't be back.
So, where does that leave me?
Y/N POV
Why do air mattresses always lose air when you sleep on them? Every air mattress I've been on has a thousand tiny little holes that make the air escape by the time I wake up.
Anyways here I am, waking up on basically the floor in a dark room. I guess my nap lasted way longer than I meant for it to. I stumble my hand through the dark until I feel it bump my phone.
"Oh, Jesus." I groan into the room as my phone blinds my poor eyes.
I have a couple of missed texts from Sam. Along with a message in the twin's group chat. Basically, the twins were checking in with me. I told them all about my mom and the neighbor and lunch. Leaving out all the Becca stuff.
Sam's text was her checking in as well and her telling me she spoke to Elizabeth.
Wait, she spoke to Elizabeth? How? Why?
Why do I care? I don't.
But let me look at the text again.
"When to check on you, but you're already gone. Elizabeth is just as nice as she seems.. Look, Y/N, I don't know everything, but I can see the guilt in her eyes. Hope you're safe."
I should reply, but what would I say? I skim my eyes across the bright message again before exiting out of the app, choosing not to reply at all. I check the time, and shit, it's later than I thought.
I roll off the air mattress-covered floor and head straight to the bathroom to freshen myself up. After doing so, I make my way out into the living room to find my mom asleep on the couch next to her open work laptop. She's done this a lot in the past, so it's not a surprising sight. I make sure to save any work she may have open before closing the laptop. I notice a dirty dish on the floor next to the couch, so I assume dinner was recently had.
I bring the dish into the kitchen, quietly placing it in the sink before checking what was made for dinner—baked chicken and rice—very exotic mother. I'm not feeling very hungry, and I don't want to wake my mom up accidentally, so I opt out of that bland meal.
I'm not feeling tired at all, so going back to "bed" doesn't sound fun at all. Social media has been hell recently. My mom is in the living room passed out, so what's there to do? I put my phone on the kitchen counter in front of me as my right hand subconsciously works its way into my pocket.
Oh, hey, the napkin. I pull out and open said Italian napkin.
I could see what Becca's up to.
Fuck it, why not.
I make a contact for Becca and laugh to myself at the moniker I chose for her: 🇮🇹 Waitress. It's so diminishing. A few seconds later, I send my first text.
Hey Becca, it's Y/N I was wondering if you wanted to hang out?
I pathetically find myself staring at the phone, waiting for a reply. As the screen goes dim, that's when I see three dots pop up before nothing comes through.
Great. I let the phone go dark before opening the fridge again. Maybe I should go ahead and shove this chicken and rice down my th-
My phone lights up.
Hey! Sure. My place? (Address)
Just two friends hanging out. Friends hang out at each other's places all the time. Why not.
Fine by me.
I see the three dots pop up.
Leave your place in about 30. I have to take care of some things around the house.
I don't respond. Instead, I send her a thumbs emoji as if she was Max. Suddenly my body starts to become nervous. I decide to head to "my" room to find a new outfit and clear my head.
_
I'm here early.
I'm parked on the street opposite the address Becca gave me. The house, or should I say condo is a two-story building attached to another two-story condo. It looks small on the outside, but looks can be deceiving.
I send a text to Becca, letting her know I'm outside in my mom's car and that I blame it on my anxiety for being here early.
Seconds later, I get a text asking me to come on in. I looked up from the driver's seat to see Becca standing in the doorway. I give her a polite smile that I don't think she could see before exiting my mom's car.
I make my way up the bricked walkway before meeting her at the door. "Long time no see," Becca says to me as she opens the door allowing me to enter behind her.
As soon as you walk into the condominium, there is a set of stairs to your right and an entrance to the spacious kitchen to the left. Straight down the hall is a door to a bathroom and a dining room next to the kitchen. What surprised me was how the living room was down three steps at the end of the hall. And it was big. This place was different than how it looked from the street.
Once I'm inside, I take note of Becca's fit. Old ratty shirt and, grey sweatpants, black socks. I remove my shoes as she locks the door behind me. "Would you like anything to drink? I'm having wine tonight, but no pressure." She says with a playful smile.
"I'll take a glass." Becca disappears into the kitchen as I stand in the doorway, unsure of if I should follow or not. My eyes look over to the stairs that go up into the darkness. Curious to see what's up there, but Becca returns with a glass before I can make any bad choices. "Come on." I follow my old classmate into her living room. It's nice. Black leather couch with a dark wooden table in the middle to match. Across from it is a big flat screen playing Sing. Or at least that's what the title says; the movie has paused on an Elephant talking to another one.
"Is this how you spend most of your nights?" I ask, joining Becca on the couch. Not next to her, but close enough. "You'd be surprised," Becca says with a smile. "Have you seen it?" I shake my head no. "Oh my God! It's so good!" I laugh at how shocked Becca is acting. "Whatever you say." Becca takes a sip of her wine before realizing that my glass hasn't been filled up yet. "Oh shit. Sorry. Most nights, it's just me." She takes the glass filling it up before handing it to me. I take a sip letting the red liquid run down my throat. When the glass leaves my lips, I turn my head to Becca to see her looking at me.
"What?"
Becca appears to be embarrassed as she looks away. "Nothing." Well, now I'm intrigued. "What?" I ask again.
"It's just.." She sets her wine glass on the table and positions her body towards me. "I don't exactly hang out with or see anyone from high school. So that fact that you're here on my couch is.. I don't know.. a little weird." She says, almost unsure.
"Why would that be weird?"
Becca closes her mouth in thought.
"How come we didn't hang out a lot in high school?" Why do people always answer a question with a question?
"We hung out," I say, even though most of high school feels like a blur.
"But we never saw each other unless it was at school or a party that you would only show up one out of four times." I shrug my arms. What's there to say? I had different friends, and she was more popular. Like I said before, she was friendly and always tried to include me in stuff, but I was never up for it. "I don't know.." I reply, only to get back a "hmm" as she takes a sip from her glass. I do the same, sensing the mood shift.
"You remember our kiss?" She says, breaking the silence. I turn to her, a little shocked that she remembers the kiss. Becca is looking down her wine glass as I respond. "Yes." Becca looks up to me. "The second I saw you, it rushed back to me like an old forgotten memory."
"Me too." I smile at her.
"How did you do it?"
"Kiss you?" I ask, not knowing what she means, which makes her laugh. "No." She replies, still laughing. "How did you come out?"
"I just told my parents..?" Becca shakes her head, setting her glass down on the table before she sits closer to me. "Y/N, I'm asking you how did you know. How did you feel coming out? Was it hard? Were you scared?"
Oh!
I set my glass down as I think about my answer. I turn my body towards Becca, giving her my undivided attention.
"For me.." I clear my throat as I look only at Becca's eyes. "For me, it was easy. I had a very loving and comfortable support system around me. I was a little scared when it came to other people knowing. That's why only certain people at school knew." I watch as Becca nods along to my words. The right side of her lips pulled into a smile, knowing she was one of the few.
"But I think I knew for a long time prior to high school. I wasn't 100% sure until the two weeks before Ethan Stoners' party." I nod to myself, confirming the words coming out of my mouth.
"The party we kissed at?"
"The party we kissed at," I reply back with a smile matching the one covering her face. Becca has now inched a bit closer to me. Now the mood has shifted once again.
"Why?" I ask in a more hushed tone than the one I've had all night.
Becca's eyes dart away back to her glass. "Hey." I softly say as she turns to me. Becca bites her lip.
"Is it too late to come out?"
I furrow my brows and shake my head at her.
"It will never be too late."
Becca shines a brand new smile at me as she leans her body closer to me. "I think for a while, I was tricking myself after our kiss." She causal drops that I was her gay awakening. Is that what she just said? I think Becca sensed my shockness. "Why do you think I kept inviting you out?"
A goofy grin forms on my face, but before I can answer, a small voice interrupts us.
"Mom?"
I whip my head towards the bottom of the stairs as Becca stands up away from me. "Yes, honey?" She walks up and out of the living room towards the voice.
She's a mom? Is this a sign? Should I leave?
I get up, not knowing what to do. From where I'm standing, I see Becca crouched down to a small, short-haired boy. The boy sees me and gasps causing Becca to look back toward me.
"It's okay, Matty. That's just a friend of Mommy's." I feel bad for scaring the kid but hearing what he says next hurts me even more. "Is she safe, or is she like Josh?" I quickly turn my face away, pretending I didn't hear that, as my eyes rapidly become full. "She's safe," Becca whispers to her child.
"Would you like to meet her?"
I turn my head towards the two humans as Becca holds Matty's hand as he cautiously walks behind her. I sit myself back on the couch, hoping that this action will make Matty feel better.
The two enter the living room. Becca shoots me an apologetic smile, but I wave it off. "Matty, this is Mommy's friend Y/N. Would you like to say hi?" Matty hides behind his mother's legs shielding his face. I look up to Becca, who mouths an "I'm sorry" I look back down to Matty, who is intently watching me.
"Hi, Matty," I say with a smile sitting as still as I can. "It's nice to meet you." Matty looks to Becca. "It's okay." Becca day down to the little boy.
"Hi." Matty practically whispers, which makes Becca and I smile.
"How about you go sit on the couch while I get you some water, okay?" Matty looks up at his mom, a little scared, before his grip on her sweatpants loosens. Becca and I oversee Matty's walk to the couch. Sitting as far from me as he can.
I decide to pull my eyes away from Matty. I don't want to scare him or do anything to upset him. A few seconds later, Becca returns with a glass of water. She crouches in front of her son, ensuring he gets a few gulps before setting it down next to her wine glass.
Since Matty is sitting where Becca started the night, Becca is now sitting right next to me. Our shoulders touching. I feel like I'm in high school again. Becca turns to face me with a smile like she is making sure I'm okay. I give her one back. It's weird to see her with a kid, but that's not business.
Becca pulls her eyes away from me as Matty tugs on her right sleeve. I don't hear what Matty says, but Becca replies, "Yes, I'm watching Sing with Y/N. Okay." Becca turns to me. "He wants us to restart the movie. He'll be asleep in the first ten minutes." I almost laughed at how annoyed she sounded, but I let her know that it was okay.
With that, Becca restarts the movie.
_
By the time Nick Offerman's character rolls around, Becca was right Matty is asleep, resting into his mother's side. Coincidentally, Becca has her body pushed into me. But it's not forceful or weird. It's relaxing—something I need right now.
"He had a nightmare." Becca's whisper pulls me away from the TV. I peer over the woman next to me to look at Matty. He's a cute kid, and how he sleeps is even cuter; he almost looks angry in his sleep. I move my eyes to Beccas. "Is he.. Is he mine?" I say without any sign that I'm joking. Becca only looks at me with shock and confusion before seeing my smile break.
"You had me worried that we needed to have a grown-up conversation."
We quietly laugh to one another before two porcupines on screen bring my attention back to the movie.
Is that- Ash the porcupine- IS THAT SCARLETT?
"Ash, babe. I'm the lead singer, okay? Just stick to the backing vocals." Holy shit, this Lance porcupine is an asshole.
"Sorry I get carried away." Ash replies, and oh my God, it is Miss Scarlett Johansson. I turn to Becca, who has eyes still on the screen. Forty-eight hours away ago, I was hanging out with her, and now I'm here.
"You okay?" Becca says, her eyes searching mine for the problem. "Just thinking about Ash," I say as if that's normal. "The porcupine?" I nod. "She's a cute character."
Matty slumps himself into Becca more, making her sigh before she gets up with him in her arms. "I'm going to set him back down in bed. I'll be right back." I go to pause the movie, but Becca clears her throat. "I've seen it a million times. Keep watching." I lean back into the couch but watch Becca, not the TV. I can't believe she's a mother.
_
"So when, if you don't mind me asking?"
When Becca came back, she pulled a blanket over the two of us and sat down right next to me. We had our attention fixated on the movie, but as it continued, we slowly started talking about other things. Never once Becca leaving my side.
"Freshman year of college. One night stand. Before you ask, I planned on getting an abortion."
"What happened?" I ask, looking down at the brunette's head.
"I don't know.. we were all set in the car on the way there, and I had this feeling wash over me." Becca turns her eyes to look up at me. "Some days, he can be a real handful, but there are these moments where his happiness is the only thing I could ever want."
"I've only seen you do it for one night, and I think you're a great mom." Becca rolls her eyes. "Stop it."
"I'm being serious," I reply, lifting myself so Becca has to move and face me. "I couldn't do it."
"You could, Y/N, and someday you will." Becca turns away from me and gets up from the couch. Suddenly my shoulder has never felt so cold.
"Here." Becca holds out a glass of water to me. "You had two glasses of wine. I'm not allowing you to leave here without drinking water and sobering up." I graciously take the water and begin chugging it down while Becca returns to her previous position.
"What, you don't want me spending the night?"
"Don't you know about the three-date rule?"
We both laugh; however, I'm not sure if she was joking or not.
"Becca," I say as comfortable silence fills the room. "Yeah?" "Earlier, you said I was tricking myself after our kiss. Was I your gay awakening?"
Becca moves her body off of mine and faces me. Our legs touching over one another. "I think you were." I can't stop the smile making its way onto my face. "Oh Goodness, I just grew your ego, didn't I?" I nod while Becca laughs at me.
"I guess I should've made it more obvious." "I should've paid more attention." We both give our reasonings for just being young and dumb.
"What's next for you? I doubt you're going to be staying here."
"I don't know... I haven't given it much thought." It's true, except Becca's right. I don't plan on staying in Nashville for more than a month. "After- after Elizabeth, my only thought was leaving New York, and now that I'm here, I'm not sure what to do."
"You'll figure it out. You were always one of the smartest and most talented people I knew. And cutest." Becca smirks at me, causing my cheeks to heat up. "Thank you, B."
"Of course, Y/N."
I move my body towards Becca as we pull one another into a hug. Whatever happens after tonight, I'm genuinely happy I ran into Becca today. If I hadn't, I'd probably be off sulking in my mom's apartment or alone in the city.
Slowly after a long comforting hug, Becca and I pull back from each other. Our faces inches from each other.
"Thank you for ton-" I'm cut off by Becca's lips smashing against my own. I feel her hands work their way down my sides before she instantly removes them. Her lips leaving mine.
"I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have done that." I go to speak, but the words get stuck in my throat.
Becca goes to get up from the couch, but my hand stops her and pulls her back down. Before she can protest, I move my hands to the side of her face pulling it towards mine.
Our lips meeting in the middle.
This isn't right. I know this. We shouldn't be doing it. But there's something here. Maybe it's this feeling in my stomach where I'm getting the same butterflies I felt all those years ago. Perhaps it's because Becca wanted it as well. Or it could be because it just feels fucking good.
I still love the woman I left in New York. But tonight, I'm kissing Becca from Nashville.
Liz POV
For the second night in a row, I'm crawling myself into Y/N's bed. Her pillows still smell like her, so they help my mind rest easier.
As hard as it will be, I know I can't stay here forever. I probably shouldn't even still be here. But with her gone, this place carries the memories we made in such a short time.
Max's girlfriend Ivy has reached out to my team personally and assured me that the case would be one of the easiest she's taken. I mean, the dude literally filmed himself doing all the horrid shit. So that's one less thing to worry about.
After scrolling through my secret social media accounts and getting frustrated with how the world is, I'm about to call it a night and force myself to go to sleep when my phone buzzes.
It's from a number, I don't recognize.
Unknown She's in Nashville.
Robbie POV
These last couple of days have been a whirlwind.
From writing new music to Lizzie's team asking my team and me to go public with the news that Lizzie and I haven't been in a relationship in over a month. To the fact that I haven't heard from Lizzie, Y/N, or anyone since yesterday.
Well, until tonight..
I was sitting in my home office going over Lizzie, and I's old ideas for children's books when my phone lit up. The text wasn't the surprising part.
"I'd like to talk."
The surprising part was who it was from: Y/N
Part 25
Spider (Dates)
Part 30 of On The Inside With Elizabeth Olsen
Word Count: ~5.8K
masterlist
Y/N POV
"Alright, come on, Y/N. Run it one more time. We only got the space for...8 more minutes." I hear a chuckle as I flip Marlana off before her voice disconnects from the booth I'm in.
I take a deep breath before sending a thumbs up to the few people on the other side of the glass.
This song has been killing me for the last two months. Between learning how to play the piano and placing the right words for this song, it's been the opposite of easy. Robbie has offered to help, but I've been very close guarded when it comes to this track.
It's Goodbye.
The one I thought up the night Liz told me we couldn't be together.
So that's why. But also, I want to see the awe on people's faces when they hear it Saturday night.
Especially hers.
Before you ask, yes, we've seen each other since I texted her about the paparazzi pictures. It's going good.
Well it was.
Anyways I'm getting ahead of myself.

Aubs POV
"So when do you want to go drop off the guitar?"
Lizzie shrugs next to me. "We can do it sometime in the afternoon." Lizzie looks back down at her phone. "Okay. Be sure to text Y/N back."
Lizzie clicks on a playlist we put together years ago and blushes.
"I just did."
Y/N POV
After my second shower of the morning, I find myself parked at James' countertop, eating a bagel sandwich and downing a latte from a shop not too far from here. I was lucky they opened as I was running by because my stomach was starting to become real upset with me.
As I scroll down the never-ending thing that is social media, I'm pretty surprised not to see Robbie, mine, or Elizabeth's name trending. Trust me, I don't want the attention, but after last night I was kinda expecting it. But that's not to say that pictures are starting to circulate.
There's one of Robbie and me at the restaurant.
Here's one of us getting into James' car. Oh, and another.
I roll my eyes as and laugh as I look through the tweets and quote tweets.
@Lizziesfutureex Is Walmart Jesus really with Y/N Y/L/N now?!? Eww
@OlsenMyOlsen Y/N looks so pretty, but wtf is going on here
@Wandaismommy save Y/N!!
@witcheswhores can we just agree that robbie looks healthier now
I close my phone out as I toss the last bite of the bagel into my mouth. Fuck. Bagels might be my latest food obsession now.
Once the trash is put away, and the counter is wiped down, I hear the sound of a key jingling in the doorway.
"Y/N?"
"In here!"
James rounds the corner looking like a little rough. He stayed with Andrea. Did he not get any sleep- ewwwww, never mind! "What?"
I look up at James' confused face. "What?"
"Is there something on my face you looked grossed out?" I shake my head. "Nothing." James rolls his eyes as he sets his keys on the counter. "Did you talk to Max?"
I watch as James makes his way to the fridge. "Yeah. She was freaking out about pictures of Robbie and I."
"Robbie and you??"
I sigh as I grab my phone and show the pictures along with everyone's hot takes. James laughs away. "What?" He looks to me. "It's just you're you, and yet here you are being photographed and gossiped about." I roll my eyes. He's right. It's funny but frustrating. "Yeah. Anyways Max just wanted to know what the fuck was going on, and once that was out of the way, she started asking me about our dinner before she had to go."
"Is she doing okay with.." James puts his head to his hands. "What's her name?"
"Ivy?" You dummy. "That's it. Are they good?" I nod. "They're great. Ivy's good for her." James smiles. "That's good." James holds a smile on his face. "What?" I smile, wanting to know what he's thinking. "Nothing." Ugh. "Don't nothing me. Come on. Spit it out."
James leans back against the kitchen countertop. "It's just nice to know that I'm finally happy. My sister's happy. My family is great. You're finally here, and about to start you're own little journey." I laugh when he uses the word little. "It's all great." I nod to his words. "It is. Andreas making you soft." James laughs up and lifts himself from the counter. "Is not! Sports Sports. Sports. Fighting. Podcast! There! All better!" I break out into a fit of laughter because of James' very serious face while doing this. If you didn't know that Max and James were related, you would now.
Two peas in an idiot pod.
"Anyways, I'm going to shower and do some errands. Need anything from the store?"
I think for a moment. "Maybe some fruit and veg. You don't really have much going on, Mr. Frozen Chicken Nuggets." James glares at me before laughing along. "It's the inner child in me- you know what? I'm not explaining myself to you." James starts to walk away to his room. "I'll see you later!" "See ya!" I laugh to myself before looking at my phone again.
I watch as text notifications come in.
It's Liz.
Hello Y/N! No worries, I believe you. My interview should be out on Friday! Thank you.
I'm reading through each word I get carefully. Somehow I still can't believe I'm texting her again. It's like my mind and body haven't caught up to the fact that yes. Liz and I are speaking, and I fucking miss her.
Just as I'm about to formulate a response, I get this text:
I do miss you, and I'm not trying to rush you or anything, but whenever you are ready I'd love to take you out. Just let me know. 🤍
See you soon.
A smile spreads its way onto my face. I'll be ready soon, Olsen. Just for you.
I head to my current room and think of a response back to Liz.
Aubs POV
"Did you know I almost married Michael Cera?"
Even behind the sunglasses, I watch Lizzie's eyes shoot open. "Aubrey, what the fuck!" I laugh as Lizzie manages to get that sentence out with a mouth full of food. In contrast, Clay looks at me with his mouth agape. "When?!" I shrug my shoulders. "Years ago. In Vegas." We were both two little weirdos making it in Hollywood around the time. We fell in love, and that was that, but things don't last forever.
"He is a little cutie." Lizzie rolls her head at Clay. "Why are you telling us this?" The Olsen leans back into her chair with a smile. I shrug my shoulder again. "I don't know. I guess I was just thinking about the future or past I guess. Like, what if I did get married? Or do I even want to do that now? I don't know. Love's weird." I start to pick at the remains of my lunch salad.
Clay didn't have breakfast, and Lizzie and I were feeling a little pecking after shopping and walking the rest of the morning.
It made it all worth it to see Lizzie scoop up some books she's been dying to read. Oddly enough, I remember her grabbing some children's books for some reason. Hmm.
Anyways here we are outside a little cafe. A place Lizzie recommends because, according to her, "those idiots with the camera don't know about it." So yeah.
I look up when I realize neither of the two seated at the table have said anything. I look to see Clay watching a happy Lizzie on her phone. "What's up?"
Lizzie doesn't respond, which leaves Clay left to clue me in. Clay leans over. "Lizzie just realized she missed a text from Y/N." Ooh! "What about?" Clay makes an "idk" face and turns back to look at his bestie.
I lift my foot up from the floor and kick Lizzie's chair, earning a look that would kill me. Man, she can be so scary.
"What?" I scoff. "Don't what me, Olsen, what's got you all smiles?" Lizzie looks at Clay, who just looks away, sipping his water, before her eyes come back to me.
"Y/N." She replies a little cheekily. "And?" Lizzie starts to blush.
Y/N POV
I shut the door to the Uber as it drops me off in front of Robbies.
With nothing but my good looks, a backpack borrowed from James full of my journals and notebooks, and my phone, I begin walking toward the front door.
I'm still in awe of the house. I know for a fact Lizzie picked this place out. It's modern but inviting. I take my eyes off the hose as I stop at the door and ring the bell.
I feel my phone buzz in my hand.
It's a text from Robbie. "Doors unlocked. Come upstairs."
Seems unsafe, but whatever.
I let myself into the house, and fuck, it's enormous. Like it's vast but small at the same time. Like its full of furniture from wha I can see, and it looks like people have lived here.
I slip my Vans off near the front door. If you walk around with shoes on in a home. Why?
Immediately in front of me, on the right-hand side of the house, is a staircase leading up. "Up we go," I mutter to myself as I start walking up the stair. Each step echoing off the wall. As I reach the top, I come to a split. Left or right.
"Robbie?"
"Over here!"
I turn my head to the left and follow where his voice came from. I pass by an open door that looks like a home office before arriving at another open door with Robbie on the inside. This also looks kike a home office. Except as opposed to white and sunny, this one is filled with dark browns creating a cozy workspace. Robbie looks up as I open the door wider. "Hey!"
I wave at Robbie as I find myself unable to speak now. I think it very quickly dawned on me where I am and how incredibly awkward this whole situation is. I mean, driving him home is one thing. But being inside this house actually about to sit down and work on something together is another.
"Y/N?"
I'm pulled from my spiral by the sound of Robbie. "Hmm?"
"I- forget it." Robbie waves his hand as he stands up. Grabbing some books with him before he stops and grabs a big piece of paper. "What are your thoughts on this?" Robbie spins the paper around so I can look at it better.
"What is it?" It looks cute, but I don't know what it is or what it's for.
"It's a storyboard." Robbie moves the paper behind some other things on the desk. I just nod my head. "For what?"
"Children's book." Oh! "Really?" Robbie looks up and smiled. "Really. I'd like to take credit, but.." But we both know who helped.
"What's the fox's name?"
Robbie starts laughing as he comes out from around the desk and starts showing me back down the hallway I came. "It's Hattie." We start making our way back down the stairs before we wind up in a big kitchen.
Yep. Elizabeth has left her mark here.
I watch as Robbie goes to the fridge and pulls out two waters. I try to take a look at what else he might have, but the door closes too quick. I thank him as he hands me the water. "So, not a fox?" Robbie chuckles before getting a move on again.
This time we stay downstairs as Robbie walks us into a soundproof room full of instruments, cables, a monitor, etc. "No. Not a fox." On the walls are records and pictures of Milo Greene, as well as some with Lizzie and the band. In each photo, she's in, she's giving a wide smile and thumbs up to the camera.
I don't think I really ever noticed, but she has some weird-looking thumbs. Still cute, though.
I jump at the sudden strum of some cords, causing my head to snap to Robbie, who wears an apologetic look. "Sorry." "That's alright." Robbie shakes his head and stands his guitar up next to him. I turn my head back to look at a photo of Lizzie with... Taylor Swift?!?
I hear Robbie move behind me as I stare at the two lovelies in the photo. I don't think I've ever seen a celebrity be star stuck, but clear as I day I see it in this photo.
Let me tell you; it's not Taylor who's star-struck.
"What's the saying?" I turn to Robbie, confused. "Pictures taken before disaster?" I tilt my head confused, before he points back to the photo. "This?" I ask, also pointing. Robbie nods. "Lizzie embarrassed herself in front of Taylor that night. You don't know the story?" I slowly shake my head.
Robbie puts his head in his hand before running a hand through his hair.
"Okay, so..."
Liz POV
Lunch with Clay came and went without Y/N messaging me back. It doesn't even say she looked at the text. I know I'm overthinking, but after the events of the last 48 hours, the progress we have made is monumental.
I just want to keep that going.
I just want my Coffee Girl again.
"Lizzie, if you look at your phone again, I will take it." I put my phone away while mocking Aubrey. I turn to look out the window before I feel a slap land on my thigh. "Hey!"
"Don't think I didn't see you, Olsen!" I lean forward so Aubs can see me before rolling my eyes, earning a laugh from the actress next to me. "You know you deserved it."
I lean back in the passenger seat as we pull up to my gated community. I guess Robbies gated- where I used to live! Aubrey rolls her window down as I hunch myself over the center console.
"Ah, Ms. Plaza! It's been a while!"
"Oh well, you know I just couldn't stay away from you any longer, Matt!" I don't know why but Aubrey loves to flirt with Matt. The first time I watched it happen, I thought Matt's cheeks were going to be left permanently red from him blushing.
But after years of it, he's used to it.
They've even gone out once or twice, believe it or not!
Anyways. "Hey, Matt!" Matt leans himself down in his little booth to see me. "Ms. Olsen! I was starting to wonder if you were coming back." I roll my eyes. "Just visiting, and it's Lizzie; you know this, Matt." Matt nods. "You're right. Sorry, Lizzie." Matt opens his mouth before stopping himself. "What?"
Matt glances at Aubs before continuing. "Will you always just be visiting from now on?" I take in Matt's question before nodding. "I will." Matt looks a little disappointed but keeps his face professional. "Would you like me to ring Mr. Arnett and his guest?"
Aubrey shoots her head from me to Matt. "Guest?"
"Yes, Aub-" "Ms. Plaza." "Yes, Ms. Plaza."
Before Aubrey can say anything else, I stop her. "No, thank you, Matt. That's alright." Matt simply leans back up and allows us to enter the gates. "Bye, Matt!" Aubrey gives a little wave before she starts driving us to the house.
"So, are we not going to talk about it?" I turn my head. "Talk about what?" "The guest." I shake my head. "Robbies allowed to have people over." I watch as Aubrey shakes her head now. "Is he seeing anyone?"
"I don't know," I reply honestly. "What does it matter anyways? We're not together." Aubrey smiles at that. "Yes, but it shouldn't take him this little time to get over you."
"Aubs, I slept with Y/N before Robbie, and I officially ended things." Robbie wanted a break, but still... We turn down a street as Aubrey starts talking again. "I know that, but what I'm saying is, is that it shouldn't take him this little of time to get over YOU! You're Elizabeth Fucking Olsen. I'd be pissed if Robert moved on that fast."
I start laughing now, understanding why Aubs is getting worked up.
"I still fucking hate Boyd for what he did," Aubrey mutters as we pull into the driveway. Aubrey turns off the car and unbuckles herself while I do the same. However, I stop her before we exit the car.
"I appreciate it, Aubrey. I really do. But Robbie and I are done. He's allowed to move on no matter how hot I am." Aubrey smiles and rolls her eyes while we pull each other into a hug. "I still fucking hate Boyd too."
_
"Besides, it's probably his band," I say, closing the trunk with the guitar case in hand.
"Hmm."
"His guest." Aubrey makes an ohh face. "But where are the other cars?" I look around the drive and only see Aubreys and Robbies. "Yeah, you're right."
"Did I get in your head?" I sigh. "A smidge." But I take a second to shake it off before ringing the doorbell, and only minutes later am I greeted with Robbie in the doorway.
Aubs POV
I keep my eyes on the bearded man as he welcomes us into Lizzie's home.
I said what I said.
"Sorry to show up unannounced." Lizzie shines an apologetic look towards the man's way. Robbie quickly dismisses the apology saying it's not needed. The whole time he keeps his eyes on her.
He is looking healthier.
I don't bother removing my flats, knowing we won't be here long. But Lizzie removes hers while keeping her eyes on Robbie. It looks like they've moved on and started talking about the guitar in her hands. I would pay attention better, but a pair of Vans resting by the front door has grabbed my attention.
As Robbie and Lizzie make their way deeper into the house, I stop and examine the shoes.
Woman's pair.
Interesting.
I stand up and try to follow the voices of the other two. I find them in the living room. Lizzie has the guitar case resting up against the couch.
"As I said, it's Y/N's, and I was thinking in my free time you could start teaching me some stuff again, or you could just look after it until I need it or she.. needs it." I look back from Lizzie to Robbie and back. "Yeah, it's no sweat. I'd be happy to look after it." She smiles at Robbie, who gives one back before diverting his attention to me.
"Hey, Aubrey, how have you been?" We share a quick hug. "Good. Looking after this one!" I bring my body closer to Elizabeth's before wrapping my arms around her, causing her to giggle. "Then she's in great hands."
I lean in and give a kiss on Lizzie's head. "Yes, she is." This makes Lizzie lift herself off of me. "Alright. Alright. I'm going to check on the garden now. Aubs wanna come? Robbie?" Robbie and I look at each other. "You two head out. I'll be out soon." Lizzie nods as Robbie begins to walk towards a hallway.
"Come on, Plaza!" Lizzie starts pulling my hand to show me her ever-growing garden.
Now I've seen Lizzie smile, but there's something about her looking at her own garden that makes every other smile dwarf in comparison.
"It's beautiful." I pull my eyes away from the green to look at Lizzie, who frowns a little but shakes it away and starts walking towards a covered area that houses her tools and gloves. I follow her and watch as she scans the area around her.
She really misses it.
"Lizzie, you okay?" Lizzie looks at me curiously. "Yeah. I'm happy I can finally use and see my garden again but coming back here hit me harder than I realized." Lizzie walks over to a plant that I have zero idea about and starts snipping some leaves. I briefly asked her why she's doing that, and she said it was time or whatever. I mainly just watched her work, kill a spider she named Tom and work some more before she spoke up again.
"Aubrey?"
"Yeah?"
"I just thought, what if Y/N was here? Like what if I showed her the garden? The house. You know a place to live.. but we just started talking again, so I don't know.."
I watch as the brunette dismisses her thoughts and continues her tasks.
I pull her onto a side hug and tell her, "It'll work out." Because if I have a say, it will work for Lizzie. No matter what.
I release the Marvel star from my grip and pull my phone out.
It's been a while since Robbie said he'd join us. And when I say while. I mean a whiilleee.
"Lizzie, I'm going to be right back." Lizzie nods her head to me and smiles. Caring more about her plants right now, but I won't fault her this time. I make my way down the very constructed and planned walkways in her backyard before reaching the back doors. As I go to open it, it slides open.
"Oh shit! Fuck Robbie!" I clutch my heart as Robbie looks at me with a face full of guilt. "Oh my God, I'm sorry! I thought you saw me!"
"It's okay. Shit." Robbie laughs to himself as he calms down from the scare. "I was just coming to go use the bathroom."
"Oh, okay! You know where it is so.." Robbie moves out of the way, and that's when I notice the faintest sound of music coming from the hallway Robbie had turned down earlier. I turn my look to Robbie and notice him holding a binder. "What's that?" I ask once inside the house while Robbie steps out.
"Oh, it's something Lizzie and I started working on, and I just wanted to know her thoughts on it since we-" "Oh, okay!" I smile, cutting him off, closing the back door.
I make my way down the hall knowing there's a bathroom there. Not far from it is the room where I can barely make out someone singing.
Maybe Lizzie's right. Maybe it is one of Robbie's band members. What's their name Marlana? That's it! Just leave it only, Plaza. You're just being paranoid. I open and close the bathroom door behind me.
Y/N POV
It wasn't much longer after Robbie told me Liz's embarrassing Taylor Swift story that the weirdness was broken, and we could get to work.
We finally got on the same page regarding the song I Love Leaving and started running down lists the two of us had put together. And we were flowing.
We knocked out: Are You Thirsty? (By Johnny Fritz) A solo song for Robbie that needs a little more called That Funny Feeling (By Bo Burnham), and we fiddle around with All Eyes On Me (By Bo Burnham) some more before the doorbell went off.
And then Robbie was gone for a while.
He came back briefly to let me know that'd he'd be a minute, but that turned into way longer, so I just started flipping through my journal pages. Writing what came to mind here and there. Playing on Robbie's guitars while he wasn't in the room and skimming through some unfinished songs until finding Goodbye.
Having lyrics and words is one thing. Finding the right cords to play is another.
But it was working. Whatever I had was working.
So long, goodbye I'll see you when I see you You can pick the street I'll meet you on the other side
So long, goodbye Do I really have to finish? Do returns always diminish? Did I say that right?
I take a pause as I hear the door open behind me. Slowly turning myself around, I was fully expecting my eyes to meet Robbie's. "Hey, Robbie, I just had this-"
Not the eyes of Aubrey Plaza.
Not only that, but she looks pissed.
Her closing and locking the door confirms that.
Under any other circumstances, this would feel like a dream, but with how tense her jaw looks, I'd say it's the opposite.
I calmly put my guitar down to the side without my eyes leaving hers. "You're Aubrey Plaza?!" The Parks and Rec lover in me is freaking out. "What the fuck are you doing here?!"
Safe to say, this was not the reaction I was expecting.
"What do you mean?" I gulp as Aubrey takes a step closer to me. "Are you fucking Robbie?! Don't you dare lie to me!" I almost gag at the words she just said to me. "Are you serious?! No. Not in a million years. He's handsome and caring, but god no!" Aubrey's face softens from pissed to confused. "Then what are you doing here?"
"Me? What about you?!"
"I'm here with-" Aubrey stops and steps closer to me again. "I'm here with Lizzie!" That's when I take note of the hushed tone she's using. She's here with Liz!! "Now, what about you?!!" I quickly gesture to the scene behind me, not using any words at the thought of Liz being just outside this door.
I watch Aubrey look behind me. "Are you two in a band or something?"
"Or something." Aubrey makes a questioning noise. "Does Lizzie know?" I shake my head no. "Robbie and I talked about doing this before I ran into her at the airport, so I haven't had the right time or opportunity too."
"Will you?" I shrug. "Hmm. Y/N?" I sharply look up. April Ludgate just said my name. "Do you still love Lizzie?" I nod without a doubt. A sly smile appears on Aubrey's face. "Well, I'm going to get back to Lizzie, and whatever's going on in here." Aubrey gestures to the room. "I better be the first to know." I start to laugh but stop once I see the look on her face. "And don't worry, Y/N, you're secrets safe with me. I know how much you care for Lizzie. Sometimes all people need is time. Lizzie's willing to give you that. I know you know that she loves you." I nod again to her words and let myself smile. "Thank you."
Aubrey unlocks the door and opens it. "No problem. Although next time you receive a text from an unknown number, you better answer, or I'll die and haunt you for all eternity." Before I can even process the words that were just spoken to me, Aubrey is already gone and out the door.
"Does Aubrey Plaza have my number?" I quietly say to myself before feeling my phone buzz in my pocket. When I pull my phone out, I see I have a text from Liz from a while ago and a new one from an unknown number. That's Aubrey.
I decided to look over the Olsens text first.
Liz POV
So it turns out we're all set to put our finishing writings on Hattie Harmony!!
I couldn't believe I had forgotten about Hattie until I saw Robbie walk out with the papers for it. Ugh, Hattie's so cute.
Robbie and I sat outside talking over how we want the story to connect to younger kids but the more we talked, the more it made sense that it's not just a kid's book. It can be for everyone.
Our thoughts were only interrupted when Aubrey came back outside. She was gone for a bit. Oh God, I hope she didn't go into my bedroom again.
I watch as Aubrey makes her way closer to Robbie and me.
"Hey, Lizzie, you almost done?" Aubs gestures towards the garden, and no, I'm not, but now that I'm in town, I can always come back. "I can be. Why, what's up?" "Nothing. It's just getting later, and I figured Robbie might want some more time with his guest." Aubrey darts her eyes toward Robbie.
Shit. I completely forgot that Robbie has someone over right now. I quickly stand up and look at him. "Oh my Gosh. I'm so sorry. Matt mentioned you had someone over, and we're taking up your time." Robbie seems to relax a little. "Hey, no, it's alright. Truly."
I still feel bad, and now I kind of want to leave. I don't know why.
"No, we'll get out of your hair," Aubrey speaks up for the both of us as I move past her and head to a container of compost and dump the dead stems and leaves I've collected. I set the bucket down and behind, washing my tools and my hands before placing everything in its area. By the time I'm done, Robbie and Aubrey are already inside.
_
I close the back door behind me, and that's when I feel my phone buzz. I quickly look up to see Aubrey waiting in the kitchen while Robbie walks back down the stairs.
"Oh, my God!"
"What!!" Both Aubrey and Robbie react very quickly. "It's Y/N!" I hold up my phone, catching Aubrey's eyes glancing to Robbie while his face relaxes. Weird. I ignore them and look at the device in my hand.
"Okay, Friday or if not maybe some time next week? Remember something relaxing."
I cover my mouth with my hand, and I can't believe it. She actually wants to!
I double-check my schedule before typing back a cute response and let my mind begin filling millions of date ideas. This will be our first date since everything happened.
"What is it?" I look up at Aubrey, who is now in front of me. I cheekily show her the texts earning a squeal and a hug from her. I look around to see Robbie moving his attention to Y/N's guitar case. Aubrey places my phone back into my hand and gives me a nudge.
"Hey, I can take that to the room if you want?" I watch as Robbie tenses up. "No. No, that's alright. There's someone in there right now."
That's when I do hear the faint sound of a woman singing.
Their voice is beautiful.
"Someone?" I question. "Not part of Milo Greene?" Robbie shakes his head and looks away. That's when my eyes grow a little wider.
"Robbie, it's okay if you're seeing someone." Robbie goes to argue, but I cut him off. "It's fine. We'll get out of your hair. Thank you for taking care of this." I walk up and brush my hands along the case. "I'll let you know if I or Y/N ever need it." Robbie nods along. "Okay. Thanks, Lizzie, and I'm sorry ab-" "It's fine." I walk up to him and pull him into a hug. "I'm just happy you're taking care of you." I hear Robbie sigh into my neck before we release our grips.
Aubrey waves bye as we start gathering our stuff heading for the front door. That's when I notice a pair of Vans by the door. Who's Robbie dating a skater girl? "I'll see you soon!" I call back to Robbie without my eyes leaving the shoes. Hmm.
Y/N POV
This time I'm facing the door just in case it's not Aubrey or Robbie who decide to pay me a visit. God, do I tell her? I get trapped in thought before the door opens.
Before Robbie can even speak, I do. "Why the hell didn't you tell me Liz was here?!" Robbie looks shocked. "How did you know?" "Aubrey paid me a visit!" Robbie starts to slightly chuckle. "She's good." "Once again, why didn't you tell me!"
"I figured you'd freak out!" I roll my eyes. I hate it when men are right. "But they're gone, and Lizzie dropped off your guitar." My guitar? Oh! I get up and follow Robbie out of the room and down the hall. On the couch, rest my guitar case. I walk up to it and brush my hands along the sticker Davey made before moving my fingers down to the clasps, unlocking them.
Inside was my guitar, but what was on top of the guitar was unexpected.
"Did you know about this?" I ask Robbie as I reach my hand into the case. "I had no idea."
Liz POV
"Who do you think Robbies seeing?"
Aubrey immediately starts laughing at me, leaving me confused. Aubrey looks towards me before looking at the road again. "Oh, you're serious?" "Yeah.." "Lizzie, we don't even know it was someone he's seeing. Maybe it's a band member."
"Maybe," I say before looking out the window. It was definitely not a band member or a new band member. Their voice was too different for being a part of Milo Greene.
I shake my head and look down at my phone. Smiling at my open texts with Y/N.
I'm taking her out.
I get to take out my Coffee Girl.
Y/N POV
1
Dear Y/N,
Right now, I'm writing to you from my rooftop garden. This is the first letter I'm writing to you. I don't know how many I'll write, but my text and calls don't appear to be getting answered anytime soon. I don't know if you'll ever see this or even want them, but I'm still doing it.
It's been four days since you left.
Believe it or not, I never wanted this to happen. I miss you. Just when we were becoming something more, I fucked up. I will always be sorry and full of regret for the things that I said.
You mean more to me than I think you will ever know. Truly. You captured my heart within our first date. Meeting someone like you made me realize that there is no one like you.
I still love you. I always will. It's not puppy love or me being trapped in the honeymoon phase because we never had one. We sprung forward and back before we even knew what we had.
But when I asked you to be my girlfriend, I knew.
Love like this is real.
I love you, and I'm sorry.
Yours, Liz Coffee Bitch.
I haven't opened the other letters from my guitar case. Over the last couple of days, I've only read and re-read this one. Like I am now.
Re-reading it before my date with Liz.
It's now 5 pm on Friday. It's been two days since working with Robbie, and I've just been relaxing and enjoying my days. I explored LA a little bit. Kept up on my running and have just been waiting for tonight.
Liz didn't give me a dress code, but I decided to dress comfortably.
I felt my phone buzz in my hand and look down.
Aubrey 🔪
She just left Be sure to practice safe sex 😉
Jesus Christ.

I think the ending of this chapter is one of the cuter things I've written 💛
Liz POV
"Sorry to keep you all waiting. Hi, I'm Dr. Connor Cameron..."
I watch a blue-eyed, tall blonde with a curly bob make her way into the center of the room. She glances her eyes around the room quickly at each person until she lands on me. At first, I think she knows who I am, but that thought stops only after she takes note of the ring on my third finger.
I'm not Elizabeth Olsen.
I'm Robbie Arnett's "wife."
That's wrong.
I briefly look away when Dr. Cameron looks up at me. Instead, I look to Y/N, the person I'm actually with.
"So you seem like a bunch that just wants to hear it straight up, so why don't we just get right into it." Dr. Cameron looked down at her clipboard and flipped through some pages before they started going down a list. "...has suffered a concussion, broken left arm, two fractured fingers, bruising, whiplash, of course, tendon repair on the right leg, 13 stitches, four above his left eye perpendicular to the temple with four more on his chin and the last five on his torso. Finally, he has cuts all over him due to the glass from the accident." The Doctor lifts her head slightly before she lets out a little "Oh." "I'm sorry... Mr. Arnett also appears to have a major blow to the skull, leading to some head trauma."
Couldn't lead with that?
Dr. Cameron lets the papers fall back into place on her clipboard, which only begins the silence in the room.
With my eyes down, I can practically feel the heat from the twins staring at me. Max and her brother are probably doing the same to Y/N.
Dr. Connor Cameron gently and politely clears her throat in a "hey, I'm still here" kinda way, making me and Y/N look up at her. "Any questions?" All eyes on me.
That caring part of me wants to open my mouth and ask just about every question under the sun. How is he doing now? Is he in a coma? Can we see him? How did the accident happen?
But...
But..
There's that other part of me. That other half of me that's just itching at my insides with the question, why. Why are we here? Why did this happen? Why did he leave? Why.. why should I car-
"Where is he?"
I glance to my left at Y/N, who appears to be the only one to have spoken up so far. Doc looks from me to my girlfriend with a smile. "He's resting in his room in the hospital's west wing. And when I say resting, I mean we had to put him under for surgery, and now it's a waiting game until he wakes up."
A little hmm escapes from Y/N.
"What- what happens when he wakes up?" I stumble over my own words. The lady in the coat gives her head a slight tilt to my question. "What do you mean?" I clear my throat. "I mean, you said he had head trauma. So is he in a coma, or is everything okay?" I point to my head in quite possibly the worst way to convey what I'm trying to explain; thankfully, everyone in the room, including the doctor, knows what I'm talking about. "Yes." She nods. "I did say he has head trauma, and no, he's not in a coma, but frankly, we don't know how okay he will be until he wakes up. He was unresponsive when the paramedics brought him in. So aside from tests and blood work, we're running right now. We truly don't know what state Mr. Arnett will be in when he wakes."
Her string of words brings little comfort to me, but at least he's alive. I still nod to her words as I look at my Y/N.
Shouldn't she be my priority right now?
I made a promise for a reason.
"What happened?" Y/N speak up to the doctor. I look over at my girlfriend, and I see her clenching her hands on her knees once again, so without another thought, I bring my left hand down and intertwine it with her right. She softens at my touch and shoots me a thankful smile before she focuses back on Dr. Cameron.
There's only been a handful of times I wish I had the Scarlet Witches' powers. One time was so I could be gone all of the fucking squirrels in my garden. Another was this time at Whole Foods because of this- *sigh* never mind.
The point is.
I wish I had them now for Y/N. I can see the pain in her body language. The way she clenches her hands. The way she flicks her eyes across from the tile by my foot to the one by hers. I know, I know she is trying to break through her past trauma about her father, Davey, right now to be here for Robbie, but I want her to know that I'm here for her in more ways than one.
Because let's be honest.
The second that phone was in my hand, and the news hit my ears, it hurt. It did.
But the longer I sit here, the clearer it becomes that walking into that coffee shop months ago was the best choice I made in a long time. It brought me something new. It brought me hell. It brought me the warmth of a new shade of color to my life. It brought me Y/N—someone who, at this moment, doesn't realize what they bring to the world.
My world too.
So the longer we sit here, the clearer it becomes that this. Robbie. And that wanting to drop everything for them can't fully exist.
And looking at Y/N... I look at the puffed-up skin under her eyes. I graze over her slightly red cheeks and onto her beautifully sculpted nose. Just below that, her pink lips thin out to almost a razor's edge just at the corners.
And what I see is that.. that maybe she doesn't have to carry the weight that she is putting onto her shoulders. Robbie isn't Davey.
"Mrs. Arnett?"
I only tune back into the conversation when Y/N turns to me. However, before I question it, I've made a final decision in my head. Something that I've known for a while.
Yes.
Y/N is my priority now.
Obviously.
Whatever it takes. Nothing is getting in the way of that.
"I'm sorry?" I say, turning to meet the curious blue eyes of Robbie's doctor. She glances between Y/N and myself with a quiet chuckle before repeating what the room has already heard. "I was just saying that we don't know the specifics of the accident but that an off-duty police officer was by when it happened. According to one of our paramedics, he called it in. He's actually here now. Don't worry. As far as I've been made aware, he's not some crazed fan. It seems like it was a right place, right time kinda deal."
"So... is there anything else?" I ask. The doc shakes her head. "Not unless any of you have any questions?" Y/N looks at me, causing me to shake my head. I genuinely don't have any questions. At least none for my girlfriend. Looking into her eyes, it appears to be the same answer.
So with a quick pan around the room, no one has anything else to ask.
"Okay. Good." Dr. Connor Cameron relaxes her body just a tad with a smile. "If the wife and sister of Mr. Arnett would so kindly follow me, I can lead you to his room." The way she said wife and sister and between her glances tells me she knows the real deal of what's going on between Y/N and me. "I'm sorry to the rest of you, but visitors aside from family aren't permitted at the moment, but come sunrise, you should all be free to check in on him." Dr. Cameron makes eye contact with everyone else to let them down easy with the news.
However, when Y/N and I don't immediately rise from our seats like she was probably expecting, Doctor Cameron makes an executive decision. "Tell you what, why don't you two.." She says, looking at my girlfriend and I. "..gather yourselves and everything else you need to do before I come in about five minutes. Okay?" I watch Y/N nod her head. "And if you feel like heading to the west wing without me, it's room 237." With that, the blonde with the lab coat leaves the room.
Y/N POV
Looking to my right, I see her already looking at me with a glint of something I can't decipher until she squeezes my hand and says to me, "Can we talk?" Before I can shake my head or nod because what the fuck does that question mean? Max speaks up.
Bless her.
"So I guess we'll see you guys tomorrow? Or..?" Max looks at me. I mean, she, along with the twins, flew out here to support me and to see family, and now I'm sitting in a hospital room for the first time in years for someone who's not even my family. I don't want to be alone. I mean, I know I have Liz, but now she wants to talk?? Talk?? What do we have to talk about? Didn't we do that after the show??
I lift my eyes up to Max, who is busy looking at the twins. Ash nods in agreement with Max and then peers her eyes to Liz. While Mary-Kate lifts herself from her phone and looks at me. "Y/N?.."
I want to open my mouth, but my body is fighting my mind right now. I can't speak.
"Yeah, we should go," Ash says, rising from her chair before shooting me a sad smile that turns into a face of concern.
Can't I just have a typical fucking day? Speak Y/N.
"Y/N?"
Liz?!?
SPEAK NOW!
"You're leaving!?"
Liz POV
Y/N practically jumps out of her seat. I knew it was coming, but she wasn't feeling my touches or listening to my words.
She glances at me and then at my standing sisters. All of us see them. Her watery eyes. Shining in the bright white light of this drafty room. MK slightly tilts her head to the side before shaking it. "Y/N..."
"Why?"
Mary-Kate looks to me for help and as a way of saying, "What is going on?"
"Why?" This time Ash asks my crying girlfriend. She's crying, and she doesn't even realize it. Y/N nods her head and darts her eyes quickly to each one of us. I do as well and see that everyone but James is standing.
I try to speak to Y/N again, but I can see her actively ignoring my words this time. Okay. Ouch. So instead, MK goes to speak, but before a word comes out, what I was trying to prevent happens Y/N bolts out of the room. Over the course of our on-again-off-again relationship, we've both seen us go through these attacks before.
I go to chase after Y/N but get stopped but two things.
One. The stares from my sisters.
Two. Max.
As quickly as I make it to the door, she does as well. "Max-" "You both have a lot going on at the moment. Let me. We'll come back when she's ready."
"What?!" I snap to my older former actresses of sisters as Max slips out of the room, leaving behind a look everywhere but the Olsens brother in James, along with Aubrey, a strong woman who is up at my side for support.
"I don't understand.. what happened?" I drop my mouth in shock at their stupidity right now. "She's having a fucking panic attack. Why are you acting like this isn't something we've all dealt with?!"
"I didn't know Y/N did."
I roll my eyes at what my favorite sister says. "Clearly, you don't know a lot, Ash." "Hey!" Mary-Kate snaps at me. "What's your problem?!" I sigh and ask, "My problem? Why are you leaving?" MK stops herself from rolling her eyes. "Because it's Robbie!"
"You don't think I know that!"
This is no longer a conversation.
Silence hangs in the air between my sisters and I. Mary-Kate grabs Ash by the arm and takes a step toward me. "Look-" "I know who is in that room, okay? But right now, I don't care who it is because Y/N needs us, me, to be there for her." Aubrey places her arm around my shoulders in an excellent way of comfort. "So if you're going to leave for any fucking reason, then go ahead and do it, but if you see MY girlfriend on the way out, give her your support and some words of comfort." I eyed my sisters with a tired look from this talk of ours. "Okay?"
Nothing but a turn away from MK and a tiny nod from Ash.
I want to move my feet to go out into the hall, but I get stopped. Ash is the first to move toward me and the first to wrap me up in a hug. I'm shocked, but I welcome it by returning the hug. "I'm sorry." The words sound choked, coming out. "Me too." I feel another set of arms squeeze their way around Ashley and me. "You really, really love her." Says Mary-Kate. "Are you serious?" I teasingly ask without lifting my head, making the question sound muffled. The twins laugh. "No."
A beat.
"It's just you never publicly snapped at us for someone else before." This time I lift my head to meet MK's sea-colored eyes. "I'm glad you have her." I see a shimmer run its course through her eyes. "Me too."
"Now, if only they can stay that way." Aubrey chirps up once again, earning a chorus of nose-filled laughs, even one from James, who I forgot was here. The twins unfurl themselves from me, allowing me to turn and slap Aubrey on the arm, hoping to leave a mark. "Shut up. We've been on more dates the past couple of weeks than you have in months." Aubrey laughs before I turn back to the twins, who are again looking ready to leave. I go to speak on it, but Ashley beats me to the punch. "We'll give her our love on the way out. Text us if you need anything. We'll be at moms. We love you, Lizard." "Love you, sis." Aubrey hugs the twins' goodbye while James shakes their hands and quickly comments on how much he enjoyed their performances in New York Minute. "Bye!" We all call out to each other before the door closes, leaving myself, Aubrey and James behind.
Once we find ourselves seated in the plastic chairs from hell again I-
"She did put on one hell of a show," James says, looking at me. "Like I knew she could play an instrument, but- wow!" I can tell James is doing his best to try and keep the room light and to focus on the good things from tonight. Aubrey catches onto this. "She did, didn't she?!" Aubrey nudges my arm, causing my lips to crack into a smile. "She was amazing." "She IS amazing." I correct the former NBC star. "Simp." "Whore." I fire back instantly, earning a gasp from said whore followed by some laughter that quiets down soon enough.
"How are you, though, really?" I turn to Aubrey and then to James, who seems just as curious to know my answer. So I will give an honest answer. "I think I've surprised myself, but how im actually fine?" I tilt my head. "I think.. I.. hmm.. I just want us to be us." I nod to my own words. "No bullshit. No outside world peeking in. No more missed dates or calls between us because we weren't together. After this. I just want to be with Y/N. I want us to have what I caught a glimpse of those very first few days with her in New York. And again after our beach date here." I laugh, looking at the promise ring on my left hand. "Where I gave her this."
"It'll come soon enough," James says to me. "Y/N isn't the most stubborn person I've met, but when she falls, she falls hard, and then she'll fight. She has that look with you. I saw it tonight. I mean the whole show, while yes being for her. It was also for you." James lets me breathe in the words. "At least that's what she told me." He quickly adds with a kind smile. Whether Y/N did say that or not, I wouldn't know.
"Ew."
I turn to see Aubrey making a gagging noise and face. Bitch. "Yeah. Yeah. You'll get all your fluffy cute shit soon enough. You can be gross on a beach somewhere or in your fucking garden." Then her eyes go wide. "Or you can be fucking in your garden!!"
"Oh, God," James mumbles as he turns away. "Oh God is right!" Aubrey wiggles her eyebrows at me with a smirk. "Y/N, do me on the blueberries!" Aubrey begins to mock my voice with a higher breathy one. Almost pornographic. "Oh wait, a snail, let me kill it. Oh yes, yes!"
Thankfully the torture ends when the door swings back open.
Y/N POV
Everyone needs a friend like Max.
She knew what I needed and gave it to me.
Space. A moment to breathe.
Followed by another moment to help me breathe when my body wouldn't let me. That's how we spent the last, I don't know, five, ten, thirty minutes? Hour? I don't know. I'm pretty sure I saw Dr. Cameron walk by at one point, but I didn't bother to lift my head to double-check. But then Max started talking.
It was for me and to me.
"Remember freshman year at Syracuse?" With my arms on my knees and my head against the hospital's white walls, I roll it to my right to Max. "Don't." "Don't what?" I close my tired eyes. "Max, I just had a panic attack. This isn't like that time at Bailey McCanns house party."
"I didn't say it was. What I am saying is that you got paranoid while high and locked yourself in her bedroom closet and wouldn't come out unless-"
"Unless you talked to me through that piece of shit door and convinced me that everything was fine. And that, yes, I did try to attempt my best Australian accent in front of Paula Ashborn. And no, I did not do well. Yes, I remember." Embarrassingly. Max smiles. "Not what I was getting at again." I shoot one eye open and look at my redheaded friend. "What I'm saying is that you talked to me. You let it out." I sigh and let my shoulders slump as I listen to Max. Eyes and ears open.
"You told me that your first job was working at your local frozen yogurt shop because two years earlier, you swore you saw the prettiest person walk into that store. You opened up to me about your struggles with being states away from home, even though that's what you wanted. You told me how much you hated Mr. Borno and his fucking class." Max laughs, thinking about my rant about his stupid white-haired face causing me to laugh.
"So Y/N. My lovely best friend. For hopefully the last time." I roll my eyes and give her a shove. "What are you thinking?" Max asks me. I open my mouth before closing it to find the right words. "I'm just tired. I- I just want a normal week with Liz. I want Robbie to wake up. I want it all to be fine. I want us to be us. After knowing Robbie is okay." I swallow and let my course throat feel the pain. "That's what I'm thinking." It's crazy how different your life can be given a few years.
Max nods to me. "I didn't mean to run out of the room. I couldn't bare to sit there anymore." "Hey, that's alright. I'm sure everyone understands."
"We do!"
Max and I snap our heads to our right and see the twins enter our space. "Sorry, we just caught the last bit. Y/N..." Mary-Kate pauses. "We're sorry." Ash nods and speaks up this time. "We didn't mean to add any more stress or uneasy feelings onto your plate."
"It's okay." "We also wanted to stop by before we leave and give you our love and support. If we can leave now?" The four of us laugh as Max and I stand up to the twins. "Don't forget that you performed the hell outta that stage tonight." She whispers into my ear before breaking the hug allowing for Mary-Kate to easily slip right in."You can't let this hug last more than three seconds, or Witchy will have problems. Again." I hear Max snort very loudly to my right at this most likely true statement.
The hug ends precisely three seconds later.
"If you or Lizzie need anything, please let us know. Talk to us. Talk to her. We love you."
"I love you guys too." I awkwardly mumble to the twins, which seems to satisfy them based on their smiles. "Call us soon. Bye, Max!" "Bye, Maxine!" The twins bid the two of us farewell before disappearing down a hallway. I let out a long exhale before balancing out my breathing.
_
"Hey!" As soon as I step into the waiting room again, I feel Liz's arms wrap themselves around me. Both of our heads resting on our shoulders. "I'm okay," I answer to her whispered worry.
I take a look over her face once out of the hug. "You're beautiful." I could tell my worried girlfriend wasn't ready for that to come out of my mouth due to how quickly she blushed and her eyes darting to the new people in the room. "Is that why she's now married to Robbie?" A joking voice forces me to turn around. It's Marlana with Graham in tow. I was wondering when they'd show up. "Hey, how long have you guys been here?" I greet both of them with a hug. "About ten minutes or so. I don't know how it happened, but we got sent to another hospital instead of here. Anyways the doctor came in not too long ago. Like the professional, she was, she wouldn't tell us what was going on without you present other than to tell Lizzie that Robbie is now awake." I nod my head along to the new information. He's awake. "Anyways, his wife over here filled us in on what's going on once the Doc left."
"Please stop saying his wife," I beg of Marlana. She playfully rolls her eyes. "Just let us know how he is when you get done."
"I can text you if you want to go home. I know it's late, and we had a long day." I try to pitch that idea to the people in the room who didn't ride with me. The only one that bites is James.
After a goodbye, Max walks him out while Liz and I head toward Robbie's room.
Liz POV
"Y/N.." I squeeze her hand as we near the room. "Can you look at me?" She turns her head to me before I stop us in the middle of the hallway. "I love you. You're gorgeous and smart and so caring." Y/N's cheeks go red. "But.." She tenses in my hands before I pull my own out from hers. I slip off the ring I gave to her and put it back onto her hand. I didn't mean to put it happened to go on the left.
What can I say!? Her face can be very distracting!
"Don't forget to put yourself first when you walk in that room. Okay?" She lifts her head to me. I see now that she wasn't expecting that. "Thank you." She leans into me and places her soft lips on mine. "For it all." She bites her lip and opens her mouth again. "When this is done." She removes her hands from mine to gesture to the hallway. "I want us to be us. No more running or missed chances. Just you and I."
I smile, hearing her say the words I want to say.
"I couldn't agree more, Y/N Y/L/N." I quickly pull her hips to meet mine and plant a rougher kiss than the last one onto her lips.
Needing to breathe forces us apart. Well, that and we began to hear loud footsteps approaching us. "Arnett family?" Y/N and I look at a familiar-looking white male in brown boots, jeans, and a blue button-down. It isn't until I see the badge on his belt that I understand who he is supposed to be.
"Officer North," he says as he greets us.
I look over his face as he begins to talk to us about what he saw from the accident. It wasn't Robbie's fault. He had a green light but was T-Boned in the middle of an intersection. However, according to his eyes, he felt like Robbie was going well above the speed limit. He also says he did the best he could to limit the injuries Robbie sustained.
"I just wanted to stay behind and have you all hear this from me personally. I'm sorry this has happened to the two of you." He offers us a kind smile. Y/N and I both thank him for all he's done. "Now, I won't keep you waiting." The familiar-looking man steps around us and begins walking down the hall until he turns out of sight around a corner.
"Was it just me, or did he look like Castle from Castle?" My eyes go wide as that's who Officer North looked like! "Yes! I was wondering why he looked so familiar!" Y/N and share smiles and a look as it seems like she's avoiding the room a bit more than she just was.
"Hey." I pull her arm and have her look at me. "He's your friend. The accident wasn't anyone's fault but the person that hit him. Robbie's fine. Now go see him." I gently push her toward the room. "I'll be in the waiting room with the others. Okay?" Y/N nods to me and says it for the first time since she mumbled it in her sleep.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
Y/N POV
Liz's steps retreat until I don't hear them anymore. I'm now standing in front of the door. Should I knock? No?
Ring. Ring. Ring.
Is it rude if I don't knock?
Ring. Ring.
I mean, It's a hospital room, not his teenage bedroom.
"Huh?" I look down and finally hear and feel the vibrations from my phone.
Caller ID: Mother.
Fuck. I never called her after the show like I said I would. I promised Nick that I'd called once a week and especially tonight.
"Mrs. Arnett?!"
I jump at the voice coming next to me as my phone slips out of my hands and collides with the floor. Putting an end to its ringing. "Oh Gosh, I'm terribly sorry!" Officer North bends down and picks up my now cracked phone. It turns on, thankfully. "I didn't mean to startle you. I thought you heard me." I look over the Castle lookalike and take my phone from him with a kind smile. "No. Sorry, I didn't. But it's alright."
Wait? What did he call me?!?
"What did you say- I- uh, before-" "Mrs. Arnett?" I slowly nod. "How- why?" I give a confused look back to him. He opens and closes his mouth before pointing to my ring finger.
Why is there a ring on that finger!!?
Omg, Liz! I'm mentally slapping her and myself for not catching this earlier.
"Once again, sorry about what's happened to your husband." Ew. Ew. No. "Thanks. Again." I smile. "Is there something you needed or..?" Officer North makes an "oh right" face. "Now, I didn't want to mention this to anyone except you...
"Okay..."
"When I pulled Mr. Arnett-" "Robbie. And I'm Y/N. Please." "Right. When I pulled Robbie from his car, based on the smell from him and the evidence of glass around, it was clear to me that he had been drinking."
Step 1 - Shock
I'm sorry?
"Now-" "Wait." "I haven't made the report yet and-" "Officer!" He stops talking and sees my face in denial.
Step 2 - Denial
"Robbie doesn't drink. He doesn't do that. I mean, he used to, but that stopped months ago." "Are you sure?" "Yes, I'm sure!" Lie. I'm not at all. "Are you sure?" I bite back like it's a fourth-grade schoolyard comeback.
"100%." The sad smile this man is wearing deepens. "The toxicology reports will back me up too. I'm sorry. I thought you should hear it from me before-" Before everyone finds out. "Yeah.." and "thanks." 'Are all I say.
I close my eyes and sigh and sigh before it's just me in the hall.
Step 3 - Anger
"Get up!" I yell and let the door swing back close behind me as I pinch his blanket-covered toes. "Ow! What the fuck, Y/N?!"
I look up to see his eyes looking back at me. Yeah, they're in pain. Only he knows what kind. I look over his face and then his body. Stitches and gauze. Casts for his broken parts. Visible cuts that were small enough to leave alone.
And I almost feel bad. Almost.
One final look that ends with the monitors beeping his life with ups and downs, I turn to him with a pointed finger and say, "How long, and don't you bullshit me, Arnett!"
"What?" "How long!" "What are you talking about?" "Don't play Robbie come on."
His face has only changed to clench his jaw and become stone-like in his defense, whereas I'm staying true. Showing my emotions. He scoffs. "What do you care."
I turn away, running my hand through my hair. "You can't be serious right now. I'm your friend-" He scoffs again.
"Stop that!" I turn back to him with my arms raised. "Stop doing that. I care about you. I'm your friend, so what the fuck is happening right now, Robbie." Robbie shakes his head. "Get out."
"Dude-" "Get out!" "No! How long!" "Y/N-" "Robbie!" He turns his head away from me.
Stalemate.
I glance to his monitor, which shows a spike from our fighting, and then look at his one moveable hand. Squeezing and releasing the blanket.
"You want the truth?"
"Of course."
He turns his head to me and looks me right in the eyes. "I started a week after you came here." What.. "I was never tired or just having an off day. I was hungover and aching to have another drink the second you were gone. Because that's what we were doing was doing to me."
I swallow the lump in my throat and take his venom. "Okay, Robbie... Fuck you. You don't get to just say these things as if I've been awful to you. I've been your friend—someone there for you. And you've been mine! What the fuck are you talking about?"
"I didn't ask for a fucking friend Y/N!"
"Then what the hell have the last few months been?"
"I did it as a favor for you because you were nice, and I knew it wasn't your fault Lizzie left me." "What?? So then what. What happened!?" "I couldn't do it."
"So you're fucking blaming me?"
"Yes."
I can't fucking believe him. I can't wrap my mind around this. I shut my eyes and rub the sides of my head. "So now what?" I sigh. "This is it?? You're such a fucking selfish asshole right now that our friendship is just done. Hmm? It wasn't real?" I look at Wal-Mart Jesus. "It's not like I didn't try.." He speaks. "Try?" I question. "Try what? To be my friend?" He shakes his head no. "To move on. I did, or at least I thought I did. Until as of late."
He turns to me and grunts in pain as he rises against his pillows.
"She'll leave you too."
I have to laugh at this. "No, no, she won't, Robbie. But God, if she ever does, it won't be because I stopped loving her. Because, unlike you, I would never stop." Tears are brimming in my eyes, but I do everything to stand my ground and stop them from falling. "I hope you do better in the future. Goodbye and fuck you."
I'm out the door before he can even get another word out.
_
"That was three months ago, and I still haven't heard from him..."
"Do you want to?" I bite my lip in thought. "This is only the fourth time you've brought Robbie up since you've started seeing me." I lean back against the sofa and stare into my laptop, huffing. "I didn't realize you were keeping count?" She laughs. "I don't keep this notebook for pleasure, Y/N."
Now I laugh at my therapist of two months, Sofia. "Umm, no, I don't think I do? I don't know.." Sofia jots something down before looking at her watch.
"Well, I hate to do this, but it looks like it's that time. But before we go, I'd like for you to think of five positives excluding Liz, Max, and, if you have any with him, Robbie." She smiles at me, and I nod, returning one. "Okay. Thank you for today."
"Of course, Y/N. See you next week, and let me know if you need another session before then, alright?"
"Will do. Thank you." Sofia nods. "Enjoy your time in Texas." The Zoom call ends shortly after. I close my laptop and set it on the counter in the kitchen as I go to pull out a salad I made this morning prior to arriving on set—my new iPhone chimes as I start digging in. I smile and send a text back, and two seconds later, the trailer door swings open.
"Hiii!!" Liz's body collides with mine. "I promise I wasn't listening in. I was just outside for the last fifteen minutes and guessed when you'd be done. So thankfully, I was right." I set my salad down and wrap my love into a tight hug! "Babe, I texted you!" She pulls out her phone and laughs.
"You said: "Sofia gave me homework come save me or I'll die!"
"It's true! You saved me!" I cheer, leaning down to kiss her lovely lips. Tasting her wiped-off lipstick from today's shoot. "Is that the salad you made this morning I taste?" I fake confusion. "I have no idea what you're talking about." She giggles and falls into me.
Liz POV
"It's my pick for a movie, right?" Y/N yells out from the kitchen to where I am in the trailer's bedroom. I try my hardest not to stay in these, but filming this show for HBO has been running an early toll, so it's easier sometimes. Plus, Y/N doesn't mind hanging out in it when she doesn't want to see me act.. Well.. Like a murderer.
"I believe so!" I yell back as she steps into the room with a bowl of popcorn. "Good! Close your eyes." I immediately shut them as a handful of popcorn gets placed in my mouth. "Hold on. Keep them closed." I hear the TV clicking and the sound of Netflix loading up. "Okay, annnnddd open!"
Mama Mia starts playing on screen, much to my girlfriend's delight seeing me squeal in happiness! "You said you had never seen it before, and since you've been humming ABBA for the last two weeks, I figured tonight was the perfect opportunity."
"I love it!" I pull her waist closer to me and plant a kiss on her temple. "And you."
"I love you too, Liz. Now shhh, get ready to have your life changed for the better."
_
"What?" I cock my head to my right as I see Y/N casted in the blue glow from the TV in the room. She laughs to herself. "Sorry, I just thought of a stupid joke."
"Well, you know the rules." I grab the remote from her lap and pause the movie on Meryl Streeps beautiful face. "Enlighten me."
Y/N picks at the comforter. "Why are chickens so good at drumming?" She quietly mumbled her way through the "joke," but I heard it. I smile brightly in the dark of our room. "Why?" She looks up to me and sends me a cheesy smile. "Because they have drumsticks."
I throw my head back and laugh like a little kid, as if it's the first time I heard it. It's not, but it's said from someone who I love and who loves me.

Robbie POV
2015
"Who's the interview with again?" I squint up at the daunting orange sun that shines before throwing on my sunglasses. One as a way to block the bright light and two to hide the bags under my eyes.
Hangovers suck.
"No one in particular; it's just a press junket." I nod my head to what Marlana is telling me.
As the band and I keep walking, I notice, much to my unhappiness, that the press setup is outside. I look through my sunglasses, a little unimpressed. I mean, the temperature is just right, and it feels excellent outside, but it looks like a golf course behind a hotel.
Plus, I feel like shit.
_
After what's felt like hours, I can tell our interview time is coming to a close as one last woman comes to us with mics in hand. She passes them out to each of us before looking off at the cameraman, giving him a thumbs up.
_
"...okay and one final question for you all. Nerdiest obsession! What's something you guys love? Something you guys just geek out over?"
I peer my head to my bandmates, but they all give me a knowing look forcing me to hike my shoulders up in defeat. So with a sigh, I answer. "Umm, I geek out filmmakers a lot! Movies I love."
The interviewer looks at me and smiles. "Favorite movie?"
"There's a movie that came out a few years ago called Martha Marcy May Marlene." "...Marlene!"
The interviewer finishes the movie title along with me, causing me to smile and bump shoulders. "Yeah! Look at that! Yeah, that was incredible."
_
"You know.." I say as we're sitting in a cab on the way to a late lunch. "That interview wasn't so bad." I hear a groan from behind me, followed up by, "Yeah, only because you got to talk about that damn movie you love."
I turn my head around and smile.
2016
"What's the plan for dinner?" I set down my beer as I ask the few remaining members of the group who aren't taking an afternoon nap or a swim in the ocean.
"Well, by the looks of it, Marlana will be too sunburnt to go anywhere tonight." I take a look out to where my friend Jack is pointing. Marlana is laughing with a group of people who were in the middle of a volleyball game before she interrupted them by the looks of it.
One person, a woman in that group, has her arms across her chest with a pout written on her face. The sides of my mouth lift up at the sight.
"Plus, I think Graham wanted to check out that local bar, so who knows? We might all be doing our own thing." Jack leans back into his beach chair while I nod and shrug at the possibility of being alone for tonight, which doesn't sound awful, to be honest.
I love my friends, but being in a band with them and traveling with a bigger group to Mexico doesn't leave a lot of time to be by myself.
"Hey, Robbie!" I look back up to see Marlana calling me over. I wave before rising to jog my way over and wrap an arm around Marlana. "What's up!?"
Out of the corner of my eye, I can see the pouty girl with her sunglasses look away, causing her to miss Maralana, grimacing and shooing my arm away.
"Just wanted to introduce you to some of my new friends. Robbie. Friends. Friends. Robbie."
Very informative.
I give a nod and a hello to the people. The pouty one turns back and gives me a polite and fake smile. Why does she look familiar? Before I can dwell on her anymore, one of the guys from the group speaks up.
"Alright, are we going to get back to the game with cutie here?" Cutie? Oh, he's looking at me. Am I Cutie? Marlana nudges my arm, causing me to break from my inner monologue. "Oh no, thank you. I'd prefer to sit on the sides. I've been told I can get super competitive." Even behind her sunglasses, I see the pouty girls eyebrows go up. "maybe next time." I add to please everyone here. And it seems to work because the guy speaking to me grows a smile on his face. "You hear that, Lizzie? There's going to be a next time." He turns to the Pouty, or I guess Lizzie, and bounces his eyebrows up and down, forcing her to shake her head.
"In your dreams, Clay." She drops her arms and walks up to me, grabbing me by the arm. "Come on." Before I can even protest or ask, I'm being pulled away, much to the chagrin over her friends and Marlana, but it doesn't take long for me to realize that being pulled away was going to be one of the best things to happen.
2019
"What?" I take a sip and quizzically look across the dimly light dining room table at the green eyes looking at me. She smiles before blinking it away and shakes her head. "Nothing."
I shrug my shoulders and smile back before placing my beer down. "Tell me." Her tight-lipped smile lifts a bit before she makes a face of stone. "Next week..." She starts. "We have to film a few days in Palm Springs, and I was wondering if you'd wanna join. It's been a while since we've gotten a trip away." She sucks her lip into her teeth as she finishes her thought.
But before I can disappoint her, she cuts me off as her mouth transforms to show her pearly whites. "I was also thinking... we got one of the scripts for Sorry For Your Loss, and in it, Leigh can't remember her husbands shitty joke." Lizzie laughs and sets her fork down. "Of course, she remembers it eventually, but it just got me thinking about that night in-"
"Mexico." I nod along with her, but unfortunately, whatever I said before is lost to me now. It had something to do with a chicken... So instead of admitting it, I smile sheepishly and say, "I still can't believe I said that to you. God, I was such an idiot."
"You were or still are?" Lizzie raises her eyebrows and takes a sip of her wine before coming back to the topic. "So I was wondering if you could say the joke just one more time?!" Lizzie scrunches up her nose and makes her eyes go big as the earth.
A slight pout is forming on her lips too.
"Alright, alright, alright." I give in as Lizzie shoves her plate of food away to put her hands in the air and do a little circle of a dance. "Now, let's pretend we're on a beach in Mexico. Exactly.." A squint to remember. "Exactly three hours after admitting to you that I loved your Oscar-worthy performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene."
"Oh God, you do realize how embarrassing that was, right?" Lizzie giggles to me.
Yes, I do.
"I'm pretty sure I was drunk when I said that. ANYWAYS. I remember looking to my right to see you casted in the almost blue glow from the moon, and for some reason, when I looked over at your face..." Lizzie tilts her head to look at me. "I said." I stall and stall, but the words don't come to me. I squint my eyes and look at Lizzie to see the thing I hate the most. Her smile disappearing.
"You don't remember?"
My eyes return to normal. "Lizzi-" But it's too late. She goes to her plate. Picking it up no longer in the mood to eat. She composes the remaining food before placing her dish with a loud clang in the sink.
She returns to the table only to pick up her phone and shoot me a tight-lipped smile before going out to her garden.
2020
I don't think either of us can recall who started it first, but as it got later and later into the year, texts and calls became less frequent even when countries apart.
Whether they were missed or ignored was another question.
But you always had a saying or excuse to cover the real reason.
Even when the i love you started disappearing, being replaced with "see you later" or "talk to you soon."
Present (2021)
"I'll see you around." I joke into Y/N's ear and pull back out of our hug.
It's weird how life is. Here I am, hugging my ex's future girlfriend after we finished performing together.
Like what?
I take one last look to the crowd and smile as my eyes catch hers. But they aren't looking to me. And no, it doesn't hurt. I've made peace, and tonight brought me that inevitable closure I wanted, but I can't stop this feeling in my stomach. It feels like guilt and regret, and I don't know why.
Maybe it's because I'm watching a part of my life stop. The part that stopped when Lizzie left London that weekend. That part that's led up to tonight. I shake my head and position myself off-stage with Marlana and Grham to watch Y/N.
"So, as I'm sure you all could guess, I'm Robbie Arnett's newest writing partner and friend Y/N Y/L/N. Thank you all for the love and support tonight. It truly means so much to me." Y/N smiles out into the crowd, and I know what song she's about to sing.
Goodbye.
I haven't heard it yet. Any time she's been working on it, I've always been pushed out of the room. She wanted me to hear it tonight. But as I watch Y/N adjust herself at the white piano, something inside of me happens.
"Hey, Robbie, where you going?"
I raise my head and look back to Marlana and Grham. How'd I get down the hall so quickly? "We're about to go on."
I shake my head. "YOU guys are going on." My words seem to convince only one of the two because the other speaks out and says, "Hey, you okay?"
Did they notice was my first thought?
I went to open my mouth, ready to lie. But instead, I nodded my head and gave a little "mmh."
Which was still a lie.
I shouldn't have left.
I should've stayed.
Y/N POV
Well, well, look who's inside again Went out to look for a reason to hide again Well, well, buddy, you found it Now come out with your hands up We've got you surrounded
As the last note drags on, the spotlight around the three of us disappears before the curtain drops, closing the show.
Immediately I stand up in a daze and begin wiping the tears that decided to leave trails on my cheeks. I knew tonight and this song we're going to hit, but this was a whole other wave. The longer the piece went on, the more lost I became until I found her eyes again.
That's when I knew-
"Oh my God, that was wonderful!" I feel my body being slammed, squished, and suffocated by Marlana as she traps me between her and Graham in a group hug. "Wait, are those real tears?! Bitch I thought you were putting those acting skills to work!" I send a sarcastic smile her way as my friends arms detach from me before we continue our way to the green room.
Wait...
"Hey, where's Robbie?!" I look around me. Wasn't he on stage with us? He was supposed to be behind me.
I look between Marlana and Graham. The latter goes to open their mouth but gets stopped by the former. "Uh, we actually don't know where Robbie went, but we'll look for him." I nod to her words feeling a little uneasy. He wouldn't just leave. Right? "Now go start cleaning yourself up. Your eyes are going red, and you're a little sweaty." I roll my said eyes as they walk away and enter the green room collapsing on the couch.
Tonight went just about exactly how I imagined it would.
Well almost.
I smile to myself and close my eyes. "I hope I made you proud." I whisper into the air hoping Davey (Y/N's "Dad" for people who might not remember) heard me.
I don't have another second to myself, though, before a body is thrown onto my own.
The skin from her body sends shocks all over mine.
I would recognize the softness from this green-eyed brunette anywhere.
It's my Liz.
The woman I love.
"Baby!" I yell out to her as she wraps her arms around me, peppering my face in kisses. I can't help but allow my face to change from one of worry from the event of tonight to letting that wash away as I let out a fit of laughs, from the kisses warming my heart.
"You're not mad?" I ask, making Liz pull her head away from me. "Mad?! Y/N, what you did tonight was beautiful! Amazing! I loved it! I-"
She's not mad!?! My mind starts racing as I let this moment sink in.
She's here. She's kissing me. She's here. I can't think of enough words to say, but that all stops when I look at her face.
"I love you, Y/N! I will never stop. I promised you, and this is me doing it aga-"
I shut her up by smashing her lips into mine. What starts as gentle quickly evolves into something more. Something I've wanted but have been too wrapped in myself to allow. I almost silently curse myself because of the lack of air forcing us to separate. It's not until I pull back and take a look at Liz's red cheeks and rising and falling chest that it hits me. We both missed this. "Liz!" I moan out as we take a second to get air into our bodies. "I want you." The words spill out, forcing my stomach to erupt into a storm of butterflies. My eyes smile to her as I scan down her face to her neck.
Onto the necklace I gave her. Lifting my fingers up to it.
I'm ready. Once again.
"I want you to be mine. Be my girlfriend."
I smile, mirroring hers. She nods her head happily. "Of course. I'm yours." Liz laughs in an effort to stop tears from spilling before she leans down onto me again, planting a loving kiss on my lips that ends too soon to my liking but is followed up by words escaping from me once more.
"I was worried you weren't going to show."
"Why?" Liz raises an eyebrow to her. "Because I left." Liz laughs into my chest. Confusing me a little. "True, but I now see it wasn't like last time." "It will never happen again." "Good. Now kiss me." My girlfriend dramatically requests that I, for one, am happy to oblige.
My girlfriend!
"Y/N about the song-" I unwraps my hands from around her and places them into her own, seemingly knowing where she is going with this line of thought. "That was from before we started being what we have been for the last month. Before tonight. Okay?" Liz nods. "Okay." "Good."
I raise her hands up to my lips and kisses them. "I missed you the last two days like crazy."
"I did-"
"LIZZIE!"
Liz jumps at the sound of her name being yelled at from down the hall. We both look at each worried, before she shuffles herself off of me. I stand up with her and hook our hands together.
"LIZZIE!"
"In here!" Liz yells out as I keep a hold of her. At the sound of her voice, we hear a rush of footsteps march themselves this way before the green room door swings open, revealing the twins along with Max!
They actually came tonight!
However, before either of us can get a word in, Mary-Kate storms up to Liz holding a phone in her hand.
"What's going on?" Liz asks as I look up to see MK's frantic look. "Take it." She places the phone in my girlfriend's hand before turning to me.
I look at the three women who are taking turns glancing at me.
"Can someone speak up?" I ask, hating how they are looking at me. Almost as if they're afraid to talk. "What's going on?" I look to Ash, who has an arm around Liz. She shakes her head. I then turn my attention to Max, who is looking at me with a sad expression. "Maxine.. wha-"
"It's Robbie." My head snaps to Mary-Kate. "On the phone?" She shakes her no. "Where is he?" "We got a call-" "From who?" Mary-Kate stops and looks over my face. Her sad blue eyes piercing mine.
I shake my spinning head as the room I'm in is becoming increasingly smaller and smaller while the cracks in everyone's words are getting louder.
Usually, people hate the ex of the person you're dating.
I don't. Isn't that weird?
My girlfriends ex is someone who I've grown to care for and become friends with over the last couple of months. Hell, there were times when I spent more time with him than with Liz.
But all of that time and effort lead to tonight. My idea. My songs. My friends and family all here. And now he's-
"We'll be right there."
I turn my head to Liz, who ends the phone call rushing towards me and pulling my body into a hug. I feel her squeeze her arms around me, and I can't help but bury my head into hers. But just as I'm about to find comfort in this tiny moment, I feel my stomach turn again.
I quickly move my body out of Liz's grasp and take long but quick strides to the nearest wastebasket before dumping what must have been a mix of water and snack food from earlier. With my throat and eyes burning, I don't even feel Max's hand gliding up and down my back until she places a napkin into my hand with her other one.
I wipe my mouth and toss the white paper into the wastebasket as well.
"Y/N.."
I turn my head around to see a red-eyed Lizzie in the doorway with Graham and Marlana behind her. I shoot my eyes at the two, and sadly it appears that they've been told.
"We need to go."
I weakly nod my head and begin walking towards Liz, barely stopping to scoop up a mini water bottle to chug. Subconsciously knowing that having post throw up mouth right now isn't exactly the best. I do my best to put on a brave face because one look at Liz and I see her doing the same.
As we exit the room, we're met by other friends that came out to support me. Max's brother and his girlfriend, Andrea. My man Cyrus. Wyatt Russell. Wa- huh? I do a double-check as we walk by him. Yep, that was him in the crowd tonight.
We even passed by a chick that clearly looks like she has some good Olsen genes. I don't think anything more of it until she wraps an arm around MK.
It appears everyone's already heard the news. I shake my head and turn to the twins. "Who's driving?" Ash goes to speak, but I turn away from them when I feel a squeeze from my girlfriend's hand that's intertwined with mine. "Aubrey's pulling the car around. We'll ride with her." She softly speaks. I nod my head, completely forgetting that Aubrey Plaza was here. "The twins and Courtney are going to meet Louis and will come see us later."
I look back to the three. I give a slight nod to the one called Courtney, who smiles at me with pity.
"Okay." I turn to my red-headed best friend. "You're riding with us." Max looks from me to Lizzie before meeting my eyes again. "Okay."
As our ever-growing group exits from backstage where we already have a line of security guards leading and helping us to the front door. After the set, it appears I already have fans. Walking hand in hand with Elizabeth Olsen certainly doesn't help the high pitch screaming and camera flashing.
Or maybe they were never here at the show.
Why we didn't go out the back, I have no idea.
There's a lot I don't know right now.
_
I don't remember Aubrey pulling up; I remember being on the street and then in a car.
I couldn't tell you what the car color was. Or when Max had the two of us put on these hats and sunglasses.
All I know is that my mind went from being exhausted to overworking itself. At the same time, my stomach starts turning again and again.
I couldn't pinpoint why? Maybe it's because the last time I visited a hospital, my father died. Perhaps it's because I'm now going there for someone who should hate me. But they don't. Maybe... I don't know, maybe it's because of the hundreds of what-ifs... "Y/n..."
I pull my head up and look right into where those green eyes should be shining. "You're hurting me.." I frown in confusion until I feel what she is talking about. My eyes go wide as Liz slips her out of mine. In her palm, I see the blood rush back into her hand and some markings from where my fingernails were starting to dig into her.
I quickly scan to my left knee, where my left hand was rested upon. It's the same deal. A vice grip that I have to force myself to let go.
When I look back to my girl, I immediately get ready to apologize, but she stops me with her soft lips on mine—a surprising but welcome thing to happen. And when we pull back, six words fall from her.
"It's okay. Just stay with me."
And then three more.
"I love you."
Once again, the words I want to say back are right there, but before I can, Max curses from the front seat. "What?" I say after wiping at Liz's cheeks and pulling my focus to the front of the car.
Max, with her phone, pulled up to her chest, turns around to face us in the back. She darts her eyes from Liz to me and back to Liz. "People already know what's happened." Silence. "What do you mean?" I say. Max looks down at her phone and back to me. "TMZ." A groan escapes from Aubrey's lips upfront at the same time Liz does it. It's an almost a comical moment. But no one's laughing. Instead, Liz leans up and asks to see the article.
Both out of fear and respect, Max gives up her phone.
I quietly read to myself what Liz is reading aloud to the car—the headline.
ELIZABETH OLSEN'S EX-FIANCÉ INVOLVED IN CAR ACCIDENT
I watch as Liz's fingers start to move down the phone but only stop when she reads the headline again. And with a click, she closes the phone and hands it back to Maxine.
"He has a name."
No one says anything, but we all think that. I would've settled for them calling him knock-off Jesus or something.
_
"I'll come find you guys," Aubrey says to Max, Liz, and me through her rolled-down window. We all nod and thank her before turning away to walk through the hospital's sliding doors. But as the three of us start taking our steps, the actress behind us calls my name.
Max and I stop, but Liz keeps going. I'm not sure she heard Aubrey. "I got her," Max whispers before moving past me to my actress of a girlfriend. I pull the corners of my mouth up slightly to show thanks before walking back to the car.
"Take care of her. I know this is weird and fucked, but... please..." I nod my head. "Of course!" "I am happy for the two of you. I really am." Aubrey stops herself from saying more, and it looks like the conversation is going to die there, but then she says, "Don't forget to look after yourself as well. I don't know everything, but I know this isn't easy for you either." Once again, I nod my head. However, this time no words follow my action, so with a roll of the eyes at the car honking behind Aubrey, pulls off to go park.
I take on a final look around to prolong myself from entering the building behind me, and that's when I spot them. Men with cameras. For a millisecond, I want to flip them off and tell them to go fuck themselves, but a second after that, I know that this will be life if I want to be with Liz. So instead, I shoot them a glare and walk toward the automatic doors.
Waiting a step inside is Max and Liz. "Oh hey," I say after also bumping into them. "We wanted to wait." I nod to Liz's words and grab her hand. "Okay, good. Let's go."
_
"Hi, we're here for a Mr. Robbie Arnett. He was brought in less than an hour ago." Liz, to my right, does the talking for the two of us. I'm thankful for that.
The lady behind the reception area briefly looks at us as they take Liz's information. I see her do a double-take at my girlfriend, but I can't tell if she recognizes her or not.
"Okay, it looks like he's in the middle of surgery right now. I can have you wait in a private area till he's done." Liz intertwines her hand underneath the counter and shakes her head yes. "Okay, great. Since it's already past visiting hours, the best I can do tonight is stretch the visitation to family only. However else can be in the waiting room with you. But only family can visit Mr. Arnett. So.." The woman looks from Liz to me and back to Liz. "Relation to Mr. Arnett?"
Liz tightens her grip with her left hand around mine. "Uhh..." The nurse looks up from the computer, almost figuring out that, technically, Liz has none. And she doesn't. Until...
"I'm his sister, and she's his wife."
Those words taste as horrible as they sound.
Liz snaps her head to me, and lucky for her. The receptionist appears to accept the answer giving me enough time to slip my promise ring off my hand and onto the third finger on Liz's left.
What the hell?
Liz's jaw tightens as she pulls her gaze from me as the lady gets up to show us to a private room. I wave Max over to follow us.
With an apologetic smile laced with pity, the lady closes the private door behind her leaving the three of us in since.
But not for long.
"What the hell were you thinking?" "I was thinking that you maybe wanted to see him as soon as possible, so I said the first thing that came to my mind." I lean back into one of the uncomfortable chairs lining the room. We've been in this building for less than twenty minutes, and I'm already sick of it.
I hear Liz take a deep breath before coming to sit down next to me. I feel her gently place her head on my shoulder. "Thank you babe but why did I have to be the wife?" I see Max's confused look across the room which makes me laugh for the first time since hearing the news. "Because I didn't want to be. Gross. Ew. And you have more experience at it."
A little laugh breaks out from Liz. "Don't make it sound like I've been running wild with marriages. I've only been engaged twice."
"Exactly more experienced."
"Just wait till it's your third."
Liz and I lift our heads up in Max's direction. This bitch Maxine... "Just saying." And that's all she says before the door opens up again however instead of someone in a white coat it's a set of twins we all know and love followed by Max's brother and Aubrey.
Aubrey and the twins run to Liz first while James runs to me before everyone switches and hugs have been fulfilled all around.
"Wheres Court and Louis?" Liz asks Ashley. "They didn't want to crowd so they're at Mom's." Liz goes to ask something else but Mary-Kate cuts her off. "Have you guys heard anything?" We shake our head no. "Just he's in surgery." Mary-Kate skips her eyes over to me before turning away when I feel James walk up.
"Did you see the bullshit article?" James whispers to me. I nod before asking where his girlfriend was. With Max's parents was the answer.
Pleasantries and conversations about tonight's show (and how unbelievable it was) have started to slow to a crawl by the time a woman in a white coat opens the door.
"Friends and family of Mr. Robbie Arnett?"
We all nod as a few pairs of eyes dart to Liz and myself.
"Sorry to keep you all waiting." Wait how much time has passed? "Hi, I'm Dr. Connor Cameron..."
As the doctor started to rattle off every injury Robbie had sustained and what they needed to do as soon as he arrived here, all I could think about was why. Why did this have to happen? Why did he leave? Will he be okay after everything is said and done?
But honestly, I just wanted to see my friend.
Unbeknownst to me, in less than 24 hours, I would come to hate Robbie Arentt.
