Felicia the Frog
Felicia was about to turn 37 when her person reached out earlier this year. Once upon a time, Felicia looked like the happy pink frog on the right:
But over time, her thin fabric wore, and she lost filling, and developed tears, and accumulated not just memories, but dirt and dust from her hugs and adventures. Here are some of her diagnosis photos:
even her bow was bedraggled!
Her person wrote:
To me she's as beautiful, pink, and sparkly as the day I got her, but I think she'd be happier if her holes were patched up. Can you help?
Of course, the answer was yes. :-)
Felicia began her stay with a gentle spa. She had mostly normal stuffing, but walnut shells in her toes which I set aside to reinstall later.
Her person chose a nice white with pink polka dots for her new fabric bow:
She had surgery, with some patches and some stitches, and soon she was healthy and whole and ready to fly home:
(that patch will fade really well over time, but for now it's a well earned scar!)
Her person wrote:
"She looks beautiful! And she was always bothered by those empty toes...She looks wonderful and I'm so happy to have her home."
How to tackle winter skin - Part 2 🌨
So, in the last post I covered how to moisturise your skin properly to protect against the dryness winter often brings. In this post, I’ll be focusing on another essential technique to keep that glow going - exfoliation.
1. Choosing which method suits you - physical vs chemical
Like moisturisers, there are a multitude of different formulas to exfoliate your skin. The main decision is picking whether you want to use a physical exfoliator or a chemical one.
Physical exfoliators usually contain jojoba beads, rice or any other natural ingredient that’s slightly gritty to slough off dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliators include lactic or glycolic acid to achieve better skin texture and tone by dissolving these cells. Those with dry skin might think that physical exfoliators are too harsh for them, meanwhile those with super sensitive skin might be wary of chemical exfoliators due to their strength.
Generally, a gentle physical exfoliator is useful for normal to combination skin types, whereas chemical exfoliators are good for oilier or drier skin types.
2. Check the ingredients/concentrations are right for you
There are a few things to bear in mind when choosing an exfoliator. When looking at a physical exfoliator, please avoid any scrub containing walnut shells, apricot pits or micro-beads. Walnut shells and apricot pits are too abrasive for the skin, meanwhile micro-beads are damaging to the environment.
With regards to chemical exfoliators, make sure the strength of the formula is right for your skin type. If you’re opting for a product containing glycolic acid, make sure to start with a low percentage (around 5%) before moving onto a stronger solution. If you want to use a lactic acid product, around 10% percentage should be fine unless you have easily irritated skin. For super sensitive skin, mandelic acid is a weaker option to try.
3. Recommendations!
The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid 10%
Superdrug’s Naturally Radiant Glycolic Tonic 5%
Sukin’s Oil-Balancing + Charcoal Pore Refining Facial Scrub
Facetheory’s Glycolic Exfoliating Cleanser/Face Scrub
The Ordinary’s Mandelic Acid 10%
Is ground walnut shell a harmful substrate for leos?
Yes, walnut shells are unsafe as a substrate.
Walnut shells are indigestible and can lead to impaction.
They are sharp-edged, which is particularly dangerous to sensitive mucous membranes, and can lead to mouth rot.
They can contain toxic amounts of tannins.
They are unsanitary, and will mold in the contact of liquids (including urates) and several of the predominant molds that grows on them produces mycotoxins, such as Penitrem A (tremortin).
Walnut shells are not a safe substrate for any animal.

Fun Fact Friday - What are microbeads?🤔
Just a few years ago, microbeads could be found in most popular facial scrubs and even in your toothpaste. Now, however, their existence is rapidly fading away. But, why? And what are they exactly?
Microbeads are tiny balls of plastic that used to be prominent in many facial scrubs across a vast number of countries.
This is because they have a smooth surface, therefore when used in a scrub they can slough away dead skin cells quickly and without causing irritation to the skin.
However, the EU, the UK and the US have all banned the use of microbeads within the past couple of years.
This follows research into how these little plastic beads wash away into the ocean from your sink, and how sea animals ingest them as a result.
Now, instead of using microbeads as a form of exfoliation, jojoba beads are one of the safest alternatives to use.
You can also find products with rice grains that can gently exfoliate your skin.
Just make sure to avoid products containing walnut shells or apricot pits, as these are too abrasive to the delicate skin on your face.
