If people are to find each other, those ambassadors are called who do not need language to be understood. Acrobats, performers, artists, athletes. They are the harbingers of the spring of nations and are always the world's best diplomats.

Remembering Walter Scheel, 1919-2016
Walter Scheel, a leading German politician during the late 1960s and 1970s, passed away this week at age 97. He served as West Germany’s Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor under Chancellor Willy Brandt from 1969 to 1974, helping to implement policies that eased tensions with the Soviet Union and establishing stronger ties with other European nations.
Following Brandt’s resignation in May 1974 he very briefly became Acting Chancellor until Helmut Schmidt was elected. Scheel was subsequently elected President of the Federal Republic of Germany, a position he held until his retirement from politics in 1979.
The Fords hosted a state dinner in honor of President Scheel on June 16, 1975. “You served with great distinction as Foreign Minister. You have shown a remarkable breadth and expertise in economics, as well as in politics,” President Ford told him in his dinner toast. He also noted that President Scheel had made “a smash hit” popular music recording in his country, observing that “Your musical success contributes to your overall accomplishments as you seek harmony at home and in concert with Germany's neighbors, both West as well as East.”
