My mother with her ink-stained fingertips and thick, square-framed glasses. Her old maroon blazer with all the gold buttons hanging on by just a thread. The tweed skirt that my father used to call "seditious" back when I didn't know what that meant. Her brown hose with the runs in them, painted over again and again with clear nail varnish because she was always either too busy or too broke to buy more.

In my mind, she is always this version of herself—ambitiously dishevelled. I'd like to think of myself that way, too, but really I just feel like a big screw-up.
