Glorfindel hadn’t expected the second son of Feanor - it was Makalaurë that sang, wasn’t it? suddenly he wasn’t sure - to approach him unbidden, and he was even more surprised to find that a small child had been thrust into his hands. Was it common among the Sons of Feanor to hand their siblings to elves they barely knew? Glorfindel supposed that perhaps they knew he was a friend of their cousin, but still, this seemed rather foolish.

“Ah, may I help you?” he asked nervously, looking down at the red-faced and decidely rather constipated looking child.

He paused, his back turned to Maglor, a soft smile spreading across his face at the frightened elf’s pleas. He schooled his face back into a relaxed expression, and allowed it to soften farther, into a concerned and loving look. Slowly he turned back to face Maglor, crossing the room quickly to where Maglor was shackled by his neck to the wall, placing his hands lovingly on the elf’s shoulders. 

“Oh my songbird,” he cooed, wrapping his arms around Maglor and carefully drawing him into his arms, rubbing soothing circles on his back. “I wish it were not like this, but you are too flighty, and if I were to let you unchained I fear you would become lost or injured, and what would become of me then?” 

Wrapping his cloak around the both of them he nuzzled his nose into Maglor’s soft hair, and whispered, “I can sit with you for a few minutes, is that to your liking?”

“I have to go with them.” Maglor said, his words heavy and falling like stones. Aulë’s hand was warm on his wrist, and he could feel his own heart beating beneath his skin.

Maglor knew that he was afraid, and he could almost sense that something horrible was going to happen–It was almost as if the future was crackling over their heads like thunder–but the instinct to follow with his family and do as his father said overwhelmed everything. When the world was as turbulent and tragic as it seemed just then he could think of nothing else to do.

The Vala didn’t know why he reached out to Maglor. Hadn’t he decided that he would not be interfering in their lives, letting them make their own choices be they good or bad? But he had grabbed him, he could feel the young elf’s frantic pulse in his wrist. “No, you don’t.”
