Wandering Son - 3/21

Wandering Son is an anime that I have never heard of before and had no idea what to expect, except that it would have something to do with the concept of gender. Rarely do I ever see media handle the issues faced by transgender people well with them usually portrayed as caricatures. However, I think that Wandering Son portrayed the issues faced by transgender children in particular pretty well.

Wandering Son follows Nitori, a boy in junior high school who struggles to be accepted for their gender identity. Throughout the four episodes, Nitori emphasizes that they want to be a girl, and that they are not just simply dressing like one. Nitori struggles to have everyone else except them for who they are. Yoshino, another student, also struggles with their gender identity. While being born a female, they want to be perceived as male. 

Both Nitori and Yoshino dress as the gender they want to be for school, but the reactions they receive differ completely. Yoshino gets complimented, and told that they look cool, and even gets asked out by a classmate. Meanwhile, Nitori gets taken to the nurse’s office and then sent home. Afterwards, they are bullied by their classmates and called derogatory terms used specifically against trans people. This shows how society is generally more accepting of women dressing in masculine clothes while being against feminine men. Women are allowed to dress like men, but if a man were to wear dresses and makeup, then he would be harassed and discriminated against. 

It is also important to note that Nitori and Yoshino aren’t just people who like to cross-dress. They both emphasize the idea that they do not want to be the gender they were born as. Society’s acceptance of women who dress in a masculine manner can also be their dismissal of trans people that transition from female to male, calling them just tomboys rather than actual men. 

Doi is one of Nitori’s classmates who is initially against the idea of transgender people until he meets a transgender woman. He seems to be opening up to the idea, but also still seems ignorant on the subject, stating that he never thought a man could be so hot; this insinuates that he doesn’t see Yuki as a woman but rather as a man. Later on, he seems to be encouraging Nitori to go to school dressed as a girl. Nitori does, but gets bullied. When they finally return to school, Doi calls them a moron, bullying Nitori like the rest of the school. If Doi was seen with Nitori, he would be called a freak or a weirdo. Doi seems to represent both the idea that someone’s ignorance can be lessened by learning about other minorities (such as trans people) and the idea that people will be quietly supportive, but will side with the status quo publicly to save themselves from harassment.
