Yong 永 — timeless, eternal. The root character Shui 水 is Water, and water is always flowing... Study after Zhiyong — 1000 Character Classic. Zhiyong was a 6th century monk who copied this children's teaching story (1000 unique ideograms in four character stanzas, the first 1000 to be learned in school) in both standard and cursive/semicursive scripts. His model for the cursive was the 3rd C "Sage of Calligraphy" Wang Xizhi, considered the Supreme Master of Calligraphy for nearly 2000 years. Wang Xizhi's teacher was Lady Wei who said "in Calligraphy, the white should be as black." Here in my study, for example, the small white triangle is an essential element in the definition and balance of the ideogram. Did you see the triangles, or only see the black strokes? This is what I mean by #emptiness_is_a_design_pattern The Eight Principles of Yong have been taught since those times as the roots of the brush movements in Chinese calligraphy. They are drop, horizontal stroke, vertical stroke, hook, rising stroke, left-falling stroke and right-falling stroke. I talk about this character in our Mindful Play and Tools for Resilience retreat. Water practice is profoundly calming, brushwriting with water...
