An interlude, tonight - I've been digging around in dusty cases for the cultists I put together for my first attempt at a Traitor Guard army. I distinctly remember the sergeant, one of the redoubtable Renegades and Heretics miniatures that a friend sold me for plane tickets, being the best miniature I had ever painted at the time. I like to think I've improved since circa 2016. I don't know if my tastes have changed, or just my techniques, and I don't even know if a repaint would make him look any better nowadays - but I liked seeing these four next to each other on the table. Out in the dark, beyond the thin cone of lamp-pack light, the distinctive pilot-light clicking of a Tox-Flamer echoed. The Veteran's lasgun came up to his cheek, the old wooden stock worn smooth against his unshaven jaw. There was a groan in the decking plates, movement ahead in the dark, a heavy weight shifting. He leaned into his rifle, waiting, thinking - a group of Poxwalkers, a Flamer using them as cover: aim here, prepare to fall back as necessary - then it was upon him. Charging from the gloom, every footfall shaking the deck, the creature came. Its howl was wordless, mouth filled with cables and piping, veins pumped with the corrupted effluvia of the Dark Powers. The Zealot's autopistol was spitting. "Mutie!" she called. But the Veteran was already dead. The mutant's grasping fist took him by the throat, and all of its weight went into driving him into the metal ground. Twice, thrice, four times. Buckling armour, breaking bone, a wet rending - then the creature fell from him, three magazines emptied into it while it did its brutal work. A moment of silence.
