Warhol is the king of "corpse art", both conceptually and actually. His corpses are presented with romantic pity but mainly quite cynical abstractions. Warhol's images make you feel nothing, right? Empty. And yet your awareness of your own emptiness is exactly what proves traumatic about them: How can I be looking at terrible things, in this case, a car crash, and feeling nothing? (The Death in America)

A near riot ensued as on lookers rushed to see Warhol, the art star. They escaped the chaos by going up the spiral staircase, into the night, and on to superstardom.
