Chance The Rapper, born Chancelor Bennett, is an independent artist who has worked on projects ranging from mixtapes, to short films, to Lion King musicals. He was named one of five “Chicagoans of the Year” by Chicago Magazine, being dubbed “The Youth Whisperer.” I would contend, however, that Chance is no mere whisperer; what he has to say stands so profoundly that it screams and demands the attention of people across the country.
Chance’s big break began with a program put on in the Chicago Public Libraries called YOUmedia, where he recorded his first mixtape while on suspension from school. Today, the artist gives back to his community in a plethora of ways in an effort to create the same opportunity for Chicago’s youth that he himself was able to take advantage of. A list of his efforts reads like this:
- On December 16, 2015 launches the Warmest Winter 2016 fundraiser to raise money to buy coats that double as sleeping bags for the city’s homeless
- For the past two years, along with his father and younger brother, he has ran a social media campaign called #SaveChicago to encourage the city to go shooting-free over the generally murderous Memorial Day weekend
- Founded and hosts an open-mike show in collaboration with the Harold Washington Library Center to create a platform for high school students to come share and support the artistry of their peers
- He helped put on a free teens-oriented music festival in June on Northerly Island that drew 3,300 people
- In July, he surprised Chicago Park District day campers by serving as their tour guide on field trips to the Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, and Shedd Aquarium
Below, you will find a video of a young Chance, performing at the public library. What I hope you will take away from it is simple, yet powerful. There are millions of kids in this world with talent, but we must provide them the platforms in which they can flourish. You see, the funny thing about talents is that they have this wicked way of hiding themselves; you can go your whole life never knowing that you were carrying a message that would have resonated with millions, never knowing that you and only you were the one with the ability to share it. All you have to do is take the chance.
