Origin & Description: Polaris Lance is a bit of a sleeper weapon in that people tend to forget about it, but whenever reminded of its existence, will pull it out and go, “oh right, this is a really good gun.” Though the name sounds similar to Graviton Lance, they’re unrelated. Polaris Lance’s gimmick is that four precision shots landed before reloading - they don’t have to be sequential, or within a certain span of time - loads a special incendiary Solar round that does extra damage plus burn damage over time. That makes it useful both in regular combat, where you might land the four shots on different enemies and fire the fifth at a big target, and in boss combat, where you can put your crosshairs on the weak point and pump in precision hits with extra damage every fifth one. Completing its catalyst also grants the Dragonfly trait, causing targets to explode with Solar damage on a precision kill.
Polaris Lance's functionality matches the feel of its design: simple but well-made and powerful. On seeing it for the first time one friend told me "it looks like a yacht somehow," and he's right. If a weapon can look rich - not gaudy or expensive, but rich - Polaris Lance is it. There's a bespoke elegance to it. The smooth, fitted lines and stitched leather grip speak to great thought given to every detail, to the unification of form and function. It's the work of someone who's as much an artist as an engineer.
That someone is Dr. Ana Bray. The Warmind DLC introduced us to legendary Hunter Anastasia Bray, hero of Twilight Gap. She supposedly fell in that battle, but we open on the discovery that she's alive and well, having allowed her comrades to believe she was dead in order to pursue a forbidden path: unearthing her own history. Ana is one of the few Guardians who knows who she was in her first life, since when her Ghost Jinju revived her she found her old Clovis Bray Corporation ID on her body, and she wants to understand her past. Her storyline and the arc of the Warmind DLC - or at least the arc that was supposed to be in there but they forgot/were too rushed to actually put in - revolve around making connections, reaching out, trusting other people. If you're interested I strongly recommend reading the free Warmind comics.
Ana doesn't just want to find out who she was out of personal curiosity. As you may gather from the name "Clovis Bray Corporation" or "Braytech," the Bray family was kind of a big deal during the Golden Age. Their patriarch, the eponymous Clovis Bray I, built an empire that colonized the solar system, invented incredible amounts of new technology like encrypted matter engrams, SIVA, and oh yeah - Exos, actual living androids (and one of the character creation options for Guardians). He was also just an incredible asshole. Just a massive, massive, egotistical, arrogant, insane, misogynistic, impossible asshole. So much of an asshole that one Compendium entry is not enough to contain it; for more on him read up on both Eyes of Tomorrow and The Lament. Anyways, Clovis married Lusia and had one son, Clovis Bray II (of course), whose genome he tampered with extensively (of course), which eventually led to his death (of course). But before said death Clovis the second married Sylvie and had three children: Wilhelmina or Willa Bray, developer of SIVA; Elizabeth or Elsie Bray, inventor of Worldline Zero and now known as the Exo Stranger; and Alton Bray, his only son and somehow so boring both his father and grandfather forget about him all the time. Clovis II and Sylvie also adopted a young girl named Anastasia into the family. Eventually an older Willa and Elsie figured out why: Ana was Clovis II's illegitimate daughter, product of an affair.
Even post-Collapse CB Corp's facilities, resources, and inventions stayed important, so once revived as a Guardian Ana always felt a certain responsibility to the family and the name - that she had a duty to understand their works and maybe even continue them. Hence Polaris Lance's first ornament, "The Bray Legacy." The Bray Legacy extends the barrel for...some reason, and repatterns the weapon in red and bronze with the circular Bray insignia on the side. In pursuing the Bray legacy (and not knowing Elsie also still lived as the Exo Stranger) Ana eventually zeroed in on one of the Golden Age's only survivors: the Warmind Rasputin. And the Warmind Rasputin found her.
Turns out CB Corp began the Warmind project and supervised Rasputin's early development, much of which was guided by...Dr. Anastasia Bray. Working in her first life as a psycholinguist, Ana herself had a profound influence on the nascent AI. And even though it had been centuries, even though Ana had died and been reborn and forgotten their bond, Rasputin had not. The reclusive, traumatized Warmind found himself unable to shut Ana out the way he'd ignored everyone else since the Collapse, and when matters started to run beyond his control in Hellas Basin she was the only one he felt capable of contacting for help.
In her first life Ana had bonded so closely with Rasputin because she was the first to treat him like a person instead of a military experiment. Her willingness to reach out to him isn't too surprising considering the distance Ana had grown up feeling from the rest of the Bray family, believing herself adopted into a family whose scion placed a weirdly obsessive value on genetic lineage. Elsie Bray made the strongest effort to reach out to her and was by far the closest among her siblings; Polaris Lance's lore tab tells the story:
Most people wouldn't consider a broken weapon a birthday present. But the Brays... aren't like most people. Sure, they tell me I'm smart, but they have a closeness, a relationship to the tools and machines they work with that goes beyond words. I never thought they would trust me enough to be a part of that. Until today.
Elsie knows I've been working in the lab, trying to perfect the scout rifle designs in secret. I thought she'd be angry, that a weapon like this was a Bray project, not something for her adopted little sister. But this morning she surprised me. She handed me the weapon, a smile on her face. She told me she had checked it over, but only I could finish it.
A real piece of Bray tech. And it's mine. I finally feel like I've found my place. The Brays are more than just scientists. They're my family.
Thus Ana and Elsie collaborated to build Polaris Lance - or rather its prototype version "Braytech RWP Mark II." You and Ana finish Polaris Lance together via the Nascent Dawn questline triggered by the post-Warmind-story "Legacy Code" mission. It starts with a clue in the form of a suspicious blank spot in Rasputin's memory and ends with forging a special engram called "Rasputin's Gift." It decrypts into a nice handcannon for you and a gift for Ana of the original blueprints for her and Elsie's project. Following the questline also recovers five journal entries for Ana detailing her work with Rasputin. Rasputin may not talk much, but he knows how to communicate when he wants to.
And that brings us to the present in the form of Polaris Lance's final ornament: IKELOS Field Tuning. For Destiny 2 years 1, 2, and 3 Ana served as the "Voice of Rasputin," planetary vendor for Mars. She spent her time tending to, interpreting for, and generally re-socializing the Warmind while he grumbled and worked on warsats, and sometimes they went on adventures together to dig up mysterious Golden Age ruins which frankly sounds like the best thing ever. IKELOS is his current weapons development program and the ornament changes Polaris Lance to a prototyped look with common IKELOS features such as the four small cubic charge coils along the side. Given the history of Ana and Elsie working on the first Polaris Lance together, I find it charming that this version has both the Bray and Warmind sigils on it, like now Ana and Rasputin are working together on the new one - like Rasputin's working with someone else for the first time in centuries.
After working round the clock during Season 10 alongside the Warmind and a mob of orb-throwing Guardians to launch enough hacked-together Seraph weaponry to take down the Almighty before it squashed the Last City, Ana helped prep Rasputin for the incipient return of Darkness. That worked, in the sense that Rasputin had a volley of very heavy ordnance ready to throw at the pyramid ships as they entered the system; but didn't work, in the sense that the volley did no good and the Darkness responded by turning around and flipping the "off" switch on our darling Warmind right in front of a shocked Ana. She scrambled to salvage as much of him as she could, transferring chunks to an engram and later, with our help, recovering the core personality that had been doing the network equivalent of hiding in an airduct for the past three months, and brought it all back to the Tower where she's currently working on getting him back online and possibly into an Exo chassis as well so he can run around too. Then Mars disappeared with content vaulting at the beginning of Year 4, moving Polaris Lance's acquisition quest to the Tower's Monument to Lost Lights, and then Elsie turned back up in Beyond Light and there's a whole emotional storyline about that - but that will have to wait. Right now there's just no time to explain...
