New study shows that the number of days there were heat waves in the ocean increased by 54% from 1925 to 2016 and is causing severe impacts on ecosystems.
Why does this matter? Researchers listed specific heat waves that resulted in substantial economic and ecological impacts including loss of kelp forests, coral bleaching, mass mortality of marine invertebrates, fishery closures and “even intensified economic tensions between nations.”
