Mortal Kombat: Legacy - Episode 1:
If you are like me, you saw that 8 minute Mortal Kombat short film last year and virtually lost your shit. The film a was teaser to get Warner Bro's to greenlight a new film, but instead they greenlight a web series to chronicle the events leading up to the new game. Either way, I'm cool with it. I'm just glad that someone is taking the property seriously again, and not making a shitty sequel (the first movie was pretty good for it's time), and an even worse TV series.
I'm going to review the episode now, so there will be spoilers...just to let you know.
Episode 1 of the web series showcases Sonja Blade, Jax, Stryker, and Kano. The former 3 are all Law Enforcement officers working to take down Kano and his robotics facility. Except Kano gets the upper hand by intercepting the communication between Sonja and Jax, and he uses it to bait them into a trap. The ensuing battle is pretty violent as thugs are using high-tech weaponry to shoot cops with explosive rounds, and the police are using equal amounts of brutality in return. Jax eventually battles Kano, and the ensuing fight ends in an explosion (which you see in the teaser trailer -- btw, that teaser makes sense now). The episode ends with Sonja escaping her chains and running to help Jax.
The 12 minute short film is not without it's flaws. The acting is kind of "bleh" in a few areas, and it felt like they were rushing the dialog to get to the action. This is to be expected since it's a web series (and the director makes feature films), but once the action starts, I was sold. The look and feel to the series is pretty top-notch for it's content, and the fact that it doesn't shy away from violence and language is a plus in my book.
I'm definitely going to be watching all the future episodes, and when the DVD comes out. I'll buy that too. A project like this needs our full support and attention, or else they won't do it again.
What did you think of the episode? Please post your thoughts in the comments, but keep spoilers to a minimum. Thanks!
