Pacific Crest Trail Day 5: If you've been paying close attention to my hike this far, you may have noticed that I started in Idyllwild and then didn't post anything for a couple of days. Why? I wanted to begin at the southern terminus of the PCT on my permit's start date, but I also wanted to get some miles in beforehand so I decided to southbound (hike south) the section from Idyllwild to Warner Springs. Then I went down to the border and hiked north to Warner Springs from the southern terminus. I'm including those first days here as to keep the trail in geographic order. Doesn't make sense? It's really not important. All you need to know is the following: There is an awesome team running a mobile outfitter called @2footadventures at Warner Springs when I arrived - far better than the Mount Laguna Dave of yesteryear. They're moving up to the Kennedy Meadows General Store so check them out if you're on trail. They good peoples. I stay at Mike's Place tonight - a trail angel house not too far from Warner Springs. Things here have changed a lot since 2013 and there are around 20 or so other hikers here with me. For some reason they're all setting up their tents. Definitely not going to rain tonight (but really, definitely not). I'm sure they'll discover the majesty of cowboy camping (sleeping without a shelter) soon enough. Day: Warner Springs to Mike's Place Day's distance: 17.8 mi / 28.64 km #WarnerSprings #PCT
Day 8 - Warner Springs
We surprised ourselves today. Leaving the water cache the elevation was fairly constant, and with a combination of lighter packs and the rest from Julian we flew in the morning: doing 10 miles before 10am - they call this a "10 before 10" - with an average pace of 3.1 mph (our new speed record).
Passing the 100 mile mark, the scenery changed from the high desert's bushes and granite gravel ridgelines to dry, grassy plains. After a few miles of this, we passed by a PCT landmark (though we didn't know it until later): Eagle Rock. There were a number of day hikers out and one kind soul shared two cutie oranges which really buyoued our spirits. Then we got a second change of scenery as we descended along a creekside lined with decidous trees we couldn't quite identify the rest of the way to Warner Springs.
Warner Springs has a really awesome community center that serves as a hiker resource center during the summer. Being at mile 110 puts it at a great location for hikers to realize they need new shoes/gear, or to come to the disapointing conclusion they are injured and need to heal up before continuing. They have an ultralight store, snack store, wifi, showers, camping, and foot soaks! We couldn't help ourselves and tucked into ice cream sandwhiches, vienna sausages, and gummy bears. Gaelen thinks this was the first time he enjoyed vienna sausages.
As we prepared to leave the community center, we got to speak with Sutton who hooked us up with some more information on our planned summit of Mt. San Jacinto in another 70 miles. Then everyone ran outside to check out the incredible cloud display that had developed. We walked a final 3 miles through cow pasture to Agua Caliente Creek where we camped with a bunch of the May 4th cadre.

Made it 150 miles! Had a good day off in Warner Springs, they certainly know how to treat hikers right. They even dropped off some leftover food for us at the end of the day that caused a hiker swarm. Now, time to hide in my tent again from some more unseasonable rain. #pct2019 #150 #warnersprings #optoutside #pct #rainyday https://www.instagram.com/p/BxI9D7THzTo/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=171ruoo5jsj01
