A Wider Circle

On Saturday, I volunteered at this amazing non-profit organization, A Wider Circle. The vision of the organization is “A world with no poverty is not an idea. It is the only acceptable reality.” Not only do they provide quality furniture, toys, and clothes for children, they offer a professional development program to help people gain the skills and confidence to gain and maintain employment as well as a program for teen moms and many other services.

All of the things they offer are donated, and the professional development program is composed of volunteers who lead career sessions, serve as job coaches, and act as personal shoppers (which I will be doing) when the clients get to pick out a minimum of five business outfits.

This entire program was started by an American University professor, Dr. Mark Bergel, who noticed that impoverished families did not have furniture to sit on and eat when he went door-to-door distributing meals with some of his students. He did not have any seed money or financial support when he started this program in 2001, he just held a strong conviction to help end poverty and converted his own living room into a non-profit office.

Now, A Wider Circle furnishes the homes of more than 15,000 children and adults each year and offers educational programs to thousands of men and women. That living room was replaced with a large center that is still expanding. It was such an inspiring experience that I just felt compelled to share.
