Prologue

Cherryfoot shifted uncomfortably.

It was already a pain that she was out here all alone for her vigil, but staying still was never one of her strongest skills, and she itched to move around, pounce on something. Once or twice during the morning, the tantalizing scent of mouse had passed by, and she had to quell the urge to chase it, instead trying to stay as still and stoic as possible.

She was a warrior now! It was what she had worked towards for moons now, and the pride kept her warm and kept her from breaking her vigil. She puffed out her chest, and rose her head, looking towards the horizon. The sun was just beginning to rise, and she would be eager to bask in its warmth. It was like Horoa himself welcoming her into her new position. Maybe that was the point.

She felt a little bad that her sister would need to wait for her name, but according to her, seer apprentices needed more time to learn, and she was perfectly patient enough to wait for her own name. Cherryfoot wondered now if that was a deliberate jab at her, and felt her face automatically screw up at the thought. It was too late now to think of anything smarmy to say back to that.

This had to be the longest morning she had ever sat through, and her straight posture slumped back down as that came back to mind. It had been wholly uninteresting, and waiting for Dustpelt to come and relieve her felt like it was going to take a moon, and she bit back the groan that has threatened in her throat as the thought crossed her mind.

She was pretty sure she had never heard of anything actually interesting happening on a vigil. Her mother had said hers was uneventful, and some of the younger warriors had extended a little bit of sympathy before she had been sent to her post. Cherryfoot just wished she was doing something a little more productive with her time, rather than just sitting here.

And then, the morning tranquility was broken in an instant.

Cherryfoot felt like the ground was giving away under her, and she jumped to her feet, fur bristling wildly. She was nearly knocked to the ground, finding it difficult to get her footing, despite the fact that she knew that the forest floor beneath her was even -- she had only been sitting on it all morning. She scrabbled at the ground with unsheathed claws, trying to find purchase, though with the ground quaking beneath her and her own panic, it took a good few moments to manage to get to her feet, and she was still unsteady.

She stood, trying to stay still, but she felt like she was going to end up off her feet again if she didn’t move. She ran, finding herself more spooked by the way the ground shifted beneath her. The trees around her seemed to make an eerie noise that sent a horrible feeling down her spine straight to her tail-tip. She nearly ran into a bush, panic making her briefly lose her sense of direction.

She wasn’t even through the tunnel yet before she was yowling Firestar’s name.
