Washington Square Park is a 9.75-acre (39,500 m2) public park in the New York City neighborhood of Greenwich Village, Manhattan. A marsh. A cemetery. A parade ground. A gathering spot for avant-garde artists. A battleground for chess enthusiasts. A playground for canines and children. Washington Square Park has served various roles for its community throughout the years, adapting to meet its needs. The park was featured extensively in the 2007 film I Am Legend. The protagonist, Dr. Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, lived directly across the street from the park. It was used as a major action piece, especially in the last scenes of the film. There are also many scenes shot in the park in the film August Rush with Robin Williams and Freddie Highmore. Highmore, playing the titular character August Rush, a musical prodigy, busks in the park under the watchful eye of the Fagin like Williams. The park scene in the 1995 film Kids also took place at Washington Square Park.

America Trip Day #32

Today we went to The High Line, an abandoned rail road overpass, which has been turned into a garden walk. It was quite nice. We then went to Washington Park, which had the Washington Arch. After that we got Bagels and Lox for lunch, and then started going to Liberty Island. After getting to Liberty Island and going through an excruciating amount of security, we got to climb to the top of the pedestal. Once we had finished there we went back to the hotel to prepare to go out for dinner. We all got dressed and then went to Gramercy Tavern for a fancy dinner. We all got two courses, as well as dessert and a cheese platter. It was cool to finally be able to wear a tie.

The Washington Square Tree Lighting officially takes places at 6pm, when the 45-foot spruce under the iconic arch will be illuminated for the first time this season. The tree will be lit every day this holiday season from 4pm and 1am.

The Washington Square Association, Inc. founded in 1906, is one of the city’s oldest community organizations. For 106 years, it has sponsored carol singing under the arch. Other activities concern the continued improvement of Washington Square, the Washington Square Music Festival, and the fostering of neighborhood spirit.
