Name: Martha Loowitlatkla Landes-Bush

Birthday: November 11th

Height: 5′5″ (approximately 165 cm)

The youngest of the west coast trio, Martha is usually the quietest too, but don’t let that fool you. Just because she doesn’t usually bicker with the other two doesn’t mean she’s afraid to loudly and clearly state her mind. And she learned a certain tone of authority getting her pilot’s license that she will use to make you listen, damnit!

Find her with a cup of Starbucks over Dutch Brothers any day (take that, Beverly!) and a grin on her face as it rains . With the wettest cities in the continental US, she’s used to the damp, and it helps keep the Evergreen State green! And don’t expect her to have an umbrella, either! They’re of no use here.

Also, yes, she has read Twilight, and no, she’s not unnaturally pale because she’s a vampire. She’s a redhead. Please just let her return to tending her apple trees instead of asking her about it. We’d all be much happier then.

Yesterday was the birthday of America’s oldest agricultural advocacy group. The Order of the Patrons of Husbandry, also known as the Grange, turned 150 years old.

Founded on December 4th, 1867, the Grange aimed to help heal the divides of a post Civil War United States through non-partisan grassroots advocacy for rural Americans.

 Major achievements of the National Grange include rural free mail delivery, rural electrification, the Australia ballot, and a mandatory hearing test for newborns.

As Washington State currently has the largest State Grange in the nation, I drew my Washington OC at her local Grange, where she holds the office of Steward.

I encourage that if you have any interest in the Grange to check out www.nationalgrange.org and see if there's a Grange in your area. Even if you live in a urban setting, there may be Granges in your area, and you are welcome to join. Everyone who eats has an interest in rural issues.
