It’s Dominican Independence Day! Firelei Báez’s artwork at 163rd St-Amsterdam Av (C train) in Washington Heights is situated in a community reported to house the largest Dominican population outside of Santo Domingo. In the artist’s words about her tropical mosaic installation, “I wanted…residents to be able to say ‘this is me’ or ‘this is something I recognize as my own’. She added, “I wanted Dominicans to just revel in it”. The azabaches, ciguapas and other cultural symbols speak of place and the station is well worth a visit!
