Just A Memory, Right?
Maybe it was because of Theta. Maybe Theta was so torn up by it that he couldn’t forget. And it just – it stuck with him.
Church isn’t sure why, but he hates it. And he hates Sigma for what he did to Maine. He hates the Meta. He hates that it all happened.
He watches from a distance as Washington stands near blue team, telling Tucker and Caboose that they need to be running laps. Theta appears next to him, looking up at him curiously.
“I’m okay bud, just – just thinking okay?”
“Are you sure?” Theta asks him, bouncing on his toes.
He’s not real, but a pang shoots through him, North would have loved to see how much Theta’s grown, how much he’s progressed.
“You don’t remember anything do you?” Church has to make sure. He needs to know that it’s not from Theta, that the memory isn’t hurting and holding it in.
“Of course not, if I did, I’d tell you.”
Theta’s gone and Church thinks about the twins. He thinks about how fucked up the director was for hurting them the way he did. For making South feel like no matter what she did she was never good enough. For being pushed to the point that she lead her brother to his own death.
Church thinks about the memories Theta left him, the fragments that somehow made it through being connected to the Meta and being dumped and reduced to nothing but a memory. He thinks about the way North was scared, how scared he was, leaving him only able to scream.
Church thinks about Theta crying, screaming a North and the Meta, begging for the Meta to-
LEAVE HIM ALONE
LET HIM LIVE
PLEASE – OH GOD PLEASE
DON’T KILL HIM
DON’T KILL NORTH
STOP –
PLEASE STOP
NORTH!
He opens his eyes looks around. He’s not there anymore, it wasn’t real. Not anymore.
Church thinks about North, begging the Meta to-
Maine please –
I know you’re there
You can win
You can fight
Don’t take him from me
Please
Don’t hurt him
Just don’t hurt him
“Church! Are you listening or not?”
Tucker brings him out of the memories. He glances over to Washington, and Caboose. When did they all come over?
“I’m sorry Wash.” It slips out before he can stop it. But he knows that Washington knows. He knows that North’s death still lingers in his mind, the way the Meta executed him.
He doesn’t know how either of them know.
But hey do.
And he’s still sorry.
Stay safe, kiddo…
And still, Church thinks about it a lot.
