The underground plumbing is coming along nicely. You may wonder why the tall pipe is sticking out of the ground and what’s its purpose. Upon completion of the rough Plumbing and prior to inspection. The Plumbing system has to be tested by filling the the entire system with water. The Plumbing Code requires a min. 10’ head Test. On one end of the waste a vertical pipe is sticking out of the ground and is fitted with a jim cap that has a hose bib connector. A garden hose is then connected to the bib and the system is filled with water until the water spills out of the top of the tall pipe. The tall pipe in the photo is what provides the head test on the system. The pipe has to be a min. of 10’ above the highest fixture. In this case we are testing the waste portion of the DWV. The Plumbing system consists of Drain, waste and vent. Each of the Plumbing systems has to be tested. The head test puts the newly installed pipe under pressure and exposes any weaknesses in the pipe or fittings. This will be the only time the waste system will be under pressure. As during its standard operation it is gravity fed.
