Water swirls knee-deep in the streets just south of Times Square, November 8, 1957, following a break in a 48-inch high-pressure water main. This view looks west across Broadway toward Seventh Avenue along 40th Street. The (old) Metropolitan Opera House is on the left, with the marquee over the 40th Street entrance lighted. Surface traffic was disrupted and subway service was knocked out by the flood as the water cascaded into basements and subway tunnels.
