The 12 Signs of the Chinese Zodiac
I drew myself in my chinese zodiac sign: the Water Monkey! Inspired by my friend alloart who drew himself in all his zodiac signs. Thought the idea was neat, so gave it a go. :-)
Drawing a pokemon every single day. Day 49, today I drew Panpour.
Ahuizotl
RARITY: ★★★☆☆ | THREAT: ★★★☆☆ SIZE: River otter or badger sized.
HABITAT:
Rivers and lakes, though they can also be spotted in streams. It seems they almost exclusively hang around bodies of water that don’t see a lot of foot traffic.
OVERVIEW:
Most people who see an ahuizotl first assume it’s a dog, otter, or monkey; it looks like some cross between the three. However, it can easily be distinguished by the hand on the end of its tail, which it uses to pull its victims into the lake or river it resides in. They spend time in water and on land, much like otters, and never stray far from their homes. They have an appetite for humans and are always keeping an eye out for those fishing or otherwise distracted. An ahuizotl sometimes attracts its victims attention first by imitating the cry of a baby, and when the unlucky human draws close to the water’s edge, it grabs them and pulls them under. Several days later, the victim’s drowned corpse usually surfaces, missing its eyes, teeth, and nails. Ahuizotl tend to be more docile to other species and creatures that live in its surroundings, such as nix.
ABILITIES:
Prehensile gripping tail is strong enough to pull a fully grown person, and has a deceptive amount of reach and give.
Skilled sound imitators, so they can trick and collect their prey. They can’t imitate complex sounds like voices, but often mimic crying babies or screaming.
Can remain underwater for long periods of time between breaths – up to half an hour!
Clever and cunning beasts, which allows them to make good use of their abilities.
WEAKNESSES:
Can be killed by typical means.
Become confused if you imitate their imitated sounds back at them, and can even be scared off in such a manner. Most people don’t know that, though.
VARIANTS
BALL-TAILED CAT:
First described by American lumberjacks, the ball-tailed cat was initially mistaken for a puma. However, its features more closely resemble those of a gigantic weasel, like an otter or fisher. These distant cousins to the ahuizotl range through mountains and deep woods, uninterested in bodies of water. They’re skilled tree climbers and will wait on tall branches or atop rocky ledges for someone to come within striking distance. They have a disproportionately long tail, and the very end of it is rounded into a large, bulbous mass, which it uses to attack people. There seems to be a silver-coated variety as well, which has a mace-like tail covered in spikes.
WATER MONKEY:
Discovered in China (where they are also called “shui houzi”), these smaller variants of ahuizotl resemble small monkey otters, but have only a stump where you’d expect to see a hand tail. Rather than pull people in with an appendage, water monkeys leap upon peoples’ legs in large numbers, clinging to them and using their disproportionate strength to drag them into the water. They reek of wet fur and can be smelled before seen. Someone who has a water monkey on their legs should remove their pants.
