The City of Pasadena, Water and Power Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Water Systems Operator. Our Water System Operators operate, maintain and repair water treatment plants, chlorination stations, portable chlorination equipment and also test for water quality. Essential Functions
The following list represents some of the essential functions of the position. Assignments may vary. For more detailed information, please refer to the jobdescription.
Operates, maintains and repairs water treatment plants, chlorination stations, and portable chlorination equipment.
Measures water wells and calculates dosages of chemicals of water treatment and adjusts feeders accordingly.
Performs tests for water quality. Reads meters; records data; and sterilizes new and repaired water mains, reservoirs, and wells.
Collects water samples at the source and in the distribution system for chemical, sanitary, and bacteriological analyses.
Observes readings and records weather data at weather and rainfall measuring stations.
Patrols and inspects reservoirs, wells, and watershed areas.
Inspects and tests gas masks and tests various gauges and pressure recorders.
Installs, inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs turbine and centrifugal pumps, pressure regulators, relief valves, water meters, hydraulic gates; check valves, motors, chlorinators, weirs, screens, pipe, conduit, and water measuring instruments.
Regulates gates and weirs to adjust flows and levels of water; operates and adjusts chlorinators and other chemical feeding equipment installations to treat water; gauges stream and tunnel flow
Reads and maintains charts on indicating and recording instruments.
Records amount of water pumped from wells and purchased from other sources.
Reports improper operations and conditions to supervisor.
Answers water trouble calls, makes repairs to equipment, buildings and structures; turns water services on and off.
Maintains pumping plant equipment in a clean and orderly condition; operates radio and water test equipment.
Qualification Guidelines
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two years experience in the maintenance, operation, repair, and construction of the facilities of a water system and possession of a Grade III Water Treatment Operator Certificate and a Grade III Water Distribution Operator Certificate.
Applications with a Grade II Water Treatment Operator and Water Distribution Operator Certificate may be considered only if the Grade III certificates can be obtained within one year of appointment. Certification with valid licensing is required as a condition of continued employment.
COMPETENCIES
The following list represents some of the core competencies needed for this position.Knowledge of practices, methods, tools, and materials used in repairing centrifugal and deep water well pumps, gates, valves, and related equipment;
Knowledge of elementary hydraulics and electrical theory to understand operation of pumps, motors, and related equipment;
Knowledge of safety rules and regulations and ability and willingness to follow these carefully;
Ability to use hand tools and to perform simple maintenance and repairs to buildings and structures including carpentry, painting, and concrete work;
Pressure tolerance to be able to act quickly and effectively under adverse conditions;
Well-developed team, interpersonal and communications skills to work effectively with others;
Ability to read machine and electrical drawings;
Strong writing skills to prepare written reports and records;
Physical strength and agility to lift up to 75 pounds, bend in all directions, climb ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower items up to 75 pounds,
Ability to operate machinery using hands and legs, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
Willingness to work rotating shifts as necessary.
SELECTION PROCESSThe selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation, interview panel, department-level interviews, and possible an online assessment.
The probationary work period is one year. The position is a part of the AFSCME bargaining unit.

Special Requirements
Applications with a Grade II Water Treatment Operator and Water Distribution Operator Certificate may be considered only if the Grade III certificates can be obtained within one year of appointment. Certification with valid licensing is required as a condition of continued employment.
Must possess a valid Commercial Class C driver's license with Hazardous Materials endorsement at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
Water System Operators may be required to work rotating shifts. Prior to appointment, a medical examination, including a back x-ray will be required.
Must possess a HAZMAT certification at the time of appointment as a condition of continued employment.
