Comparison between student and pro grade watercolor (Faber Castell vs. Mission Gold) So you are just starting out to learn watercolor & definitely you are lost on how to pick the right watercolor set for you. Don't have enough budget yet to splurg to pro grade sets & wondering if you can still learn watercolor if you use a student grade one. The answer is YES! But depends on what style of painting you are going for. In comparison based on this photo, it seems like they are quite the same but if you examine carefully the Mission Gold (MG) appears to be more intensed (swatches above) than the Faber Castell (FB, swatches below). To be honest I don't like watercolors in cake forms because I find it harder to pick the colors, I had to really work my way in just to get the juicyness of the color and a lot of times I find them to be more chalky as compared to other student grade like the WN Cotman or Van Gogh & when they dry they tend to be paler & yes chalky looking. But this FB one I noticed that yes it has some color intensity shift when dry but not to the point where you can really see that it became too pale like the Simbalion one. I also find that the colors of this set appears to be brighter as compared to other cake form w/c. On the other hand, MG is really intense. A liitle goes a long way & the color doesn't shift that much when dry. Although comparing this to other pro grade like Winsor or Daniel Smitch etc I find that when you mix some colors you won't get the same color as when you mix the other brands, probably it got something to do with the pigment ingredients that MG is using. You can definitely see the big difference of the 2 w/c when it comes to transparency. The MG colors have a very nice transparency quality while the FB colors you can still see that they are not that transparent almost like hazy when dry. In the next post, I will further explain my comparison between the 2 brands. Just a disclaimer; I am not an expert on this, I mainly review them based on my experience. You may have different experience with them & that is fine 😄 #calligrafikas #grafikas #dreweuropeo #watercolor #watercolorcomparison #review
